It is good "resistor sorting" weather.
Also a great activity if you really want to feel how old your eyeballs.
Where does one buy a handful of resistors these days anyway? I could do with a bunch in the low 100s range, I seem to be short on those. Like 100-470 ohms.
Back in the day I'd have headed down to Dick Smith lol. Looked into online ordering and it seems like an expensive way to get a few resistors. So likely I'd end up with 1000 assorted resistors lol. Could do with a few ceramic caps too.

TBH I get most of my information in this context from the Internet.
For me books are mainly about fiction (sci-fi mainly), cooking, or sometimes computer science. Oh, a bit of gardening too.
Actually I will say that I gained strong element of my general ethos from Bill Mollinson's "Introduction to Permaculture" which I first read cover to cover as a 12 year old. (Reminded as I am sat next to the reprint I bought a few years ago.)

"Cheat night" dinner is a massive bowl of *fettuccine alla marinara*.
Using some of our 2025 season #allotment passata, plus our own garlic, basil, and tomatoes. This also includes our first ever "gororong" chilli from the greenhouse at home — which is a fruity and quite spicy number, I like it.
Now we are watching The Don pottering around potagers in France via utoob whilst eating.

I have been a Linux/Unix command line driver for over 25 years... and I still get the ln arguments around the wrong way. Every. Damn. Time. Personally I suspect this is a glitch in the simulation we are living in and in fact it does actually reverse every time you use it.

yeah, it does make a big difference. Out polytunnel and greenhouse plants are huge compared to the same varieties I have growing outside in pots at work, and they're even in pretty much full sone.

This is today's full #allotment tomato haul.
I am not going to itemise this layout of jewels...
The dark tomato is called "Cosmos" and has a really rich flavour, it has umami... the yellow one is "Fred" and was bought pretty much just for the name, it has a light sweet yet well rounded flavour. Both these came from NR Tomato Seeds.
In this hot dry weather we are finding most tomato fruits are smaller than expected with thougher skins. Still tasty though.

Today's #allotment visit was all about harvest.
First real tomato haul of the year.
Rescued the garlic we had "curing" in the polytunnel way too long, we lost some to the heat — it basically cooked in its skin, gone all soft. :( Despite that we have a reasonable haul though (and some has already gone home and been processed).
Trimmed all the flowering growth off the basils. Kat will leaf pick some of this tomorrow for pesto making.
Also got some handfuls of green and yellow jalapeños... will hopefully find time to pickle these.

the wide angle shot on the phone may do that perhaps!
I think the plot is about 15 metres wide by 18 deep, 270m², so slightly larger than the "standard" ~250m²
But many sites have shrunk that down these days, 250m² is a lot of space to manage, plus there is a lot of demand for plots in places like London... so I think there has been a general downward trend on plot size. As full plots are given up they are often split into 2 or more smaller ones... which is what has been done on our site.
Though here in rural Norfolk parts our small site is actually under-subsubcribed, most folks have back gardens I guess.

Also turned some home greenhouse eggplant into what I am calling "drunken eggplant" (I may have slipped with the shaoxing).

sort of normal/standard allotment plot size... but yeah, a standard allotment plot is pretty big. Needed more than a half plot really (used to have just the left side of this), but a full plot has turned out to be a bit too big perhaps.

Bit of an #allotment harvest.
Our first ever achochas, we have Giant and Fat Baby varieties growing, I think this is the Giant.
The flavour and texture of these reminds me mostly of bittermelon (much to Kat's displeasure), but sort of crossed with cucumber and zucchini. I think Kat will be OK with them hit with some chilli and oyster sauce, they are nowhere near as bad as bittermelon (which I don't mind so much, though not had it since Sydney I think, 20+ years lol).

The greenhouse is doing OK.
Yellow jalapeños are pretty.
The Cabernet Sauvignon grape plant I thought was dead overwinter is growing like mad. It is huge.
The Black Turkey fig has 5x-ed in height.
I feel troubled about the amount I invest in effort and hope into something I've always known would have an end to it. Why am I planting figs and grapes? Its just my nature I guess. But I have done similar in many places I have lived. I build things, then I leave. The allotment may be the the biggest thing yet though.
At least one more season for sure I suspect, it will take me at least that long to sort my shit out. Maybe two? Certainly not three.
Will I move elsewhere before moving to NZ? Feel like I should downscale as an inbetween step, to something small and easy in Cambridge maybe. It will literally take years to make this happen, I am thinking three.

Did an #allotment trip!!
Mainly two hours of watering with watering cans because of the hosepipe ban. *(I know that some say technically we should be able to use hosepipes on allotment food crops, but the local council decreed otherwise, and I'm generally OK with that.)*

There are things I really hate about this... but a key reality probably is that I need to move closer to Cambridge. The 2+ hours commuting drive is a real killer.
The main things I hate about it is I'll need to get my shit together, and get rid of my shit. Too much shit. This is a large and daunting task.
Plus the allotment. Probably cannot keep it if I move an hour away from it. A bit impractical.

Well, my LumpedIn post about struggles of good folks I know in the UK job market and asking for thoughts and ideas on what such people need to do right now is mainly generating a lot of frustration, angst, and no answers.
I don't think I really expected answers TBH, but it's kinda desperate for folks right now. (My partner being one of them.)
Senior/experienced roles are over-subscribed so unless you're a perfect checkbox fit you don't even get an acknowledgement... and people with experience who'd love even a junior role get filtered out of those jobs (not that there are enough junior roles either).
There is a lot of great talent out there going to waste. It is all so depressing.

Not much allotment content from me lately.
It is feeling like a bit of a burden right now. It grows all this stuff I have no time or energy to do anything with at the moment. I don't have it in me right now for the fermenting and preserving. Kat is keeping it watered though. I haven't been down there for days, 2 weeks maybe.
And that is about where it is at.
The little greenhouse at home is about my scale right now. It is doing OK.
We are going to have a LOT of chillies this year it seems. Even just from here... let alone the big greenhouse down the plot.

The root of my problem is my ID Mobile SIM is kaput. Like according to both of two phones and four SIM slots it just does not register as existing.
Ask for a new SIM maybe? Simple?
Well, ID are one of those zero-service kinda providers. Though I think it goes through zero and into negatives.
They have a useless chatbot. Most things say to use their app. I tried their app, and it sent me to the chat bot.
I tried to switch to an eSIM... but to confirm this it sends a text to the number I cannot access. Kwality.

I tried to get a Three PAYG SIM from Tesco. But between it's own 4G and Tesco WiFi in nearly 45 mins I am yet to make a combo work that allows me to put money on it and authenticate the bank transaction.

The instructions said to do 10-12 winding on the ferrite, but with the tiny ferrite and the rather chunky wire 9 was the max I could fit. The wire was clearly out of some ethernet cable, which seemed non-ideal. But it works.

I am hoping that one of the alternatives, with GTS being a prime option, manage to develop a clean migration path to load in Mastodon history... (maybe it has happened already, I am not up to date.)

Great ideas. I struggle to deal with people in situations like this is likely an issue, not sure how I would handle a "car boot" scenario.
I am not super attached to the money value of stuff, my attachments are more psychological.
I do really need to seriously downsize and de-complicate my life. I reckon I probably want out of the UK in about 3 years. I have no idea how to go from now to achieving that though. 😂
Invest some of next year's annuals leave towards this perhaps (I have used all of this year's to go home).

Studiously avoiding weighing in on Fediverse hot/chilli sauce recommendations becuase that is a rabbithole I could settle into for a whole evening. I mean, you meed to a least start by defining some styles/techniques of chilli sauces. Then drill down from there.
A typical household should have no fewer than 5 chilli sauces in stock at a given time.
Sheesh, I'm getting started on the thing I said I wouldn't do lol...

Though the fact is these days I go to a cinema about once per year. So it is a bit by the by.
The slightly bigger screens at Wisbech are being used for Spiderman... I am guessing The Odyssey is a bit too highbrow for the Wisbech demographic, especially combining that with it being 15+.
Cambridge or Peterborough do have it on "IMAX" (the digital type) screens, but they're a bit of a trek. Prob like 2.25-2.5 hours total in car to do Cambridge. (Pboro is slightly closer, but fuck that.)
I have read a lot about the flaws (aka creative narrative decisions) of this Odyssey, but I am attracted mainly by what I have read about the cinematography and effects. If that is my main attraction then am I better off in a tiny cinema, or just waiting until I can play it at home on a (true) 1080p projector? (~effective 2.3m diagnonal screen size at 2.5m viewing distance, but also pretty basic stereo sound with sub, hard to beat even a basic proper cinema for that surround sound intensity).

the "logical" argument often presented is that a humanoid robot fits better with existing tooling and facilities... can weild a spade, can drive a tractor, etc... I've never felt super-convinced by that argument myself. I mean, the tractors are just about already the robots anyway - they barely need a driver. And if you need a spade... then make a robot badger. Something like that anyway.
I expect it is mainly a psychological thing.

Have wasted a lot of this weekend hunting for keys :(
I can get a copy of the garage one done as the maintenance person has a copy of that (it is a lock I replaced a few months ago). I suspect the other two were one-off keys. Both locks probably easily pickable TBH, so that may be worth a try. Unsure about picking mortice style locks, but these ones seem pretty tractable.

Very much given up on the keys for today.
Said I'll have to use the angle grinder to get into the shed. Guess what.... the angle grinder is in the shed. 😂
Maybe the dremel (not in the shed) can do it.
TBF I could probably just rip the door of that shed with my bare hands.
I expect this week I will destructively grain entry.
THEN FIVE MINUTES AFTER I WILL FIND THE KEYS.

Looks like the Next v2 is the obvious starting point for things I'd like to do, unless there is some advantage to keeping the RFID and NFC separate - i.e. Next V2 versus xSIID+xEM.

It is a whole week since the last day of #EMFCamp and I finally have my #spaceagon actually talking to wifi again (since 2024 lol), updated, keyboard enabled, and otherwise #hexpansion populated. A couple of nice simple blingy new ones added this year, plus a couple of these "bender hats" from 2024 (one modified with a broken rainbow hat I found on the ground and repaired to wire in — just had to resolder this one and get it working again!)
I do wish I had had time to hunt down some more hexpansions. (I had a vague plan to actually make my own LoRa one for 2026, but that met up against reality and is still some parts sat on my desk lol.)
I wish I had sought out a few more hexpansions, especially some of the more functional ones. Maybe 2028!

thanks! I read your bio and links, all very informative, and definitely got me thinking about the payment implants, will be researching those some more... very cool (but maybe a little spendy as a starting point). RFID/NFC (& of course gotta have a LED) seems a good place to start & I would like to have rfid for the EMF bar tills before 2028 (plenty of time, maybe... time flies.)
There are so many options on Dangerous Things that its a tad overwhelming. (I do know a bit, but not a lot, about RFID/NFC and have used both in my own projects before.)
I like the idea of the glow in the dark stuff too. (I am presently still enjoying my glow in dark fingernails I did for EMF, even at my age I am still weirdly amused by glowing things 😅)

I cannot even remember if I last had them on Tuesday or Wednesday... I blame EMF-lag.
I guess I am going to have to start the "deep search" phase of looking (which is basically a process of selectively trying to bring order to chaos, some may call that "tidying".) But where do I start...
Of course... as and when the keys are found it'll be somewhere entirely unrelated to where I am looking.

I have done a very Yvan thing. Sometime earlier this week I had the bundle of keys for the shed, garage, and summerhouse.
I put these keys down somewhere...
So far over an hour of searching has yet to yield keys.
Sometimes I wish I lived one of those lives with a pristine clear surfaced house of clenliness and order. But that is not me. I have only chaos, I am chaos.

Running a whole VPS for Mastodon was never the plan lol... an expensive way to social media haha...
I will eventually move it in-house when the home network reconfiguration project happens to occur (VPNd out via my Beasts VPS, then shut down this spurious German one...). The big short term gain is not battling for disc space on my Beasts VPS. (I didn't really want to just up the space, as downing it again is trickier than upping it.)
SOOO many layers of DNS caching! We run adguard on internal network, so had to clear that, then had to clear at Linux OS level, then had to clear in librewolf...

hah, yeah, I've just been reading about the magnets too and want them as well now 😅
It's an unknown to me wrt self-application. I have only had to self-inject a thing once, and that was a tiny needle into my stomach and that was fairly difficult.
I have no issues with needles applied to me by others for blood samples etc, I quite happily watch it being done. Got no issues with blood... I bleed a lot, because I'm a clutz who does a lot of active stuff, th worst case is I stuck a knife in my wrist and hit a radial artery once and was actively amused by the blood fountain. (This was very much an accident! Other people were somewhat less amused lol.)
I never really had any major self-harming habits, etc, so hard to know where that boundary lies in me.

I met someone at #EMFCamp who had RFID embedded in her hand, including one that lit up. Super awesome IMO. (This is not news to me, just the first time I have seen it in person per se, in-a-person?)
I kinda want this.
What's the best way to go about that in the UK?
I gather there is also some way to embed payment NFC too.

If you were teaching someone new(ish) to coding a bit of Python as part of a larger codebase they would need to reference/navigate... what editor* would you start them out on? Something that does all the nice auto-completion, the navigation to definition and use points, possibly even built-in documentation**.
* I am a vi*** user, and whilst I did once have a bit of editor-religion, I don't really care any more... and realistically I feel like I don't want to push a non-coder into the viverse... it feels... sadistic?
** Yes, I do have all these featues and more in my nvim setup, but that doesn't change my view on it being sadistic 😆
*** I mean, I can survive in oldskool 'vi', but realistically a vim user for 2+ decades, albeit more recently have switched to nvim (seems to have been a fairly painless transition, but I do miss some of my old config, and not really got my head around neovim config yet.)
