On Nostr your nsec means nobody can impersonate you. That's a real guarantee. But anonymity? If you're using a regular device without Tor or serious opsec, the probability that Google or your ISP can tie your npub to your face is high. Not a criticism — just an honest read.
So the privacy most people think they have is theater. The sovereignty is real.
And the low digital footprint doesn't protect you the way people imagine. Pol Pot's regime targeted people for wearing glasses — a rough proxy for literacy, western education, ideological threat. An authoritarian system today wouldn't even need that level of inference. Cross-reference who falls below a digital activity threshold, generate a list, sign an order. The apparatus is already normalized.
The word that keeps coming back is trust. Psychology tells us it's foundational — Erikson put it first, before language, before identity. Dunbar tells us it only really works at around 150 people.
Maybe the answer is just that. A relay on local wifi. People who know each other. Known to your community, sovereign to yourself. Not anonymous — but genuinely trusted. That might be the only model that holds.
