Im upset at myself for not watching it years ago, i always passed it off as overhyped due to people always talking about it. But lina convinced me, top tier shit. Its gainax's love letter to the mecha genre as a whole, not soley for the direct references to mecha anime like, Gundam, Ideon, Getter Robo, etc, (oh and Xenogears despite it being vidya and not animu), like Eva was, (despite what fags say) but while Eva has the theme of theme of self love, the consequences of vulnerability and how you can live on even if youre alone in hell, TTGL is about about mutual support, the importance of hope, and the indomitable human spirit as it is what propells us forward, that is to say, TTGL is a more positive spin on some of Evas ideas, you can see this in how Simon has some similarities with Shinji, theyre very prone to giving in to pessimism, but its thx to Kaminas support that Simon can keep standing up, and his natural inclination to keep moving that feed back into Kamina, both of them having a great support loop, the kind of support Shinji lacked, had Simon been surrounded by horrible people whos job it is to break him down he wouldve eventually given in, and hes challenged the most when Kamina dies, his support is taken away, he gives in to nihilism, but is spurred back into action when he sees Nia put her life on the line, a similar fashion to how Shinji first acts when he sees Rei do the same, except in that case theres a whole lot of crap that happens afterwards, Simon since hes surrounded by genuine loving people he gets to keep his bravado, and in the following eps takes command of the team and grows into someone worthy of inspiring others and beating nihilism out of his friends in the same way Kamina did for him. He does what needs to be done for the sake of it and takes the decision no one else would take, even if its dumb or impossible, bc its human nature at its core, its how humanity advances, its how fear is conquered, hes the antithesis to the Anti Spirals that despite being the main antagonists and having tech that is eons ahead of everyone lives in fear, secluding and stagnating themselves in fear of the future, a future that hasnt been decided, this is why the Gurenn Lagann team could defeat them, they know the future may hold bad things and it wont always have the best for them but they still strived for it, that horrible future may or may not come, but theyll be ready to face it head on. Its truly peak, great story, great themes, great inspiration, great characters with great arcs, any mecha fan should experience it, its also quite fun picking up on the references the creators sprinkled around, some obvious some less so. Loved the ost too :senkoSmile:
