At this point bluesky has some points for me. They successfully got a huge mass of people on an open source app front and backend. There's actually people in my town, people I met on tour, people not talking about Bitcoin or the protocol. Their "planned" decentralization efforts for ATProtocol are not really moving along I know. I think Nostr is a better protocol, but I can almost see an outside group like Free Our Feeds(but probably not them), actually building an alternative firehouse system closer to nostr (light and easier for individuals or small companies/developer to share infrastructure) but ATprotocol compatible, before I can see nostr people getting over themselves and the "inevitability" of Bitcoin and nostr. I've seen no indication the main devs care at all about changing the core image of nostr to be a place for anything. You can't just push it off until later because connotations set like concrete.

- I regularly use #Amethyst, nostrudel.ninja and, jumble.social in my phone, but would love to see anything new emerging. Would likely use nos.social if they made an android app.
I actually never microblogged before nostr, because it's just not what I like to do. But I do it too keep interest as more stuff like flotilla (as a reddit not discord replacement), olas, freeflow, sheetstr, whitenoise, etc evolve
Stuff I like in a general notes/microblogging client h:
- Editing + history support is vital. There's no reason to stop people from correcting typos and stuff when the history is right there if you want to make sure the core communication is untouched. I've seen no good arguments against my viewpoint so far but always open to listening.
- I like violet/bluish (but decidedly more) purple accent color so if you can customize accent color or it already is purple it's a plus for me. Hey some of us care about stupid shit.
- I'm not libertarian or a Bitcoin fanatic so devs that are primarily into nostr's unique possibilities vs nostr as a vehicle for advertising singular political slant and Bitcoin advocacy. It's not near a deal breaker if the tech is good,, but it's nice to support neutral protocol focused open mindsets not primarily trying to help further their own chosen/inherited allegiance group that I very likely don't care about.

People can also lose a lot of money on chain fees by oversimplified advice like this. I recommend reading about lightning, chain fees, channel partners, etc before just jumping in. There was not the same financial risk from ineptitude from the custodial alby product.

Bitcoin hasn't convinced me as a decentralized self-custodial day to day money. Lightning isn't a fully scaled solution without some of the same issues as fiat and the self custodial experience is not really great for a normal person. An alternate solution might come though by the time it matters. I'm not heavily invested in Bitcoin beyond a little bit for technical curiosity and testing, and I'm 0 invested in other crypto. Still, I do find exploration of consensus models really interesting and worthwhile. I think some of the things Mina are doing are very appealing but I still think it's early in marrying it's concepts. I think being automatically dismissive of crypto projects that are earnestly exploring is bad blinding logic just the same as lumping Bitcoin's progress and position along with other existing crypto, as many uniformed folks do. Bitcoin probably has proven itself as a hardened steel solid store of value though.

The flotilla client is focused more on a discord/chat experience, but it's the setup I've been harping on forever that should run something like Reddit/thread experience. Each community/sub should be a relay (or a set for redundancy) that is friendly to diy set up. And the clients are viewers/aggregators that show one or multiple community's comment at at time with easy switching. When I first heard of Ditto I thought it was that but I find out it kind of implements some of the issues I have with mastodon into nostr

Real people from bands I've played with on tour are showing up on Bluesky and finding me. I only use bluesky and nostr apps for protocol development watching. Still, actual people I know being accessible is one slight bonus. Helps make up for the presently inferior atprotocol.

2 things:
1) Profanity AND hateful speech, or are those misguidedly coupled together as 1 flag? I wouldn't consider sarcasm and profanity the same category as hate speech against someone's intrinsic quality or group membership. I only spoke on their actions / provided communication.
It's equivalent in language math to "you (the data analysis challenged commenter) is saying delusional things". If that would not be flagged as hate speech then this isn't either.
The main functional issue would be I can see someone wanting profanity (as there is no ethical issue with it) shown but to hide hate speech.
2) Regardless I'm not sure if this post is the product of utilizing moderation features of a client I can't use on Android, or it's being flagged for removal on a relay or something. Regardless I'd be happy to just remove it if that's actually what you want. I can't tell. Just say the word if that's your desire

Posted a relevant thought last month. I'd like to see nostr as a repo source and user hub for discovering, adding, syncing/managing RSS feeds, but the app would display RSS feeds directly rather than make use profiles to echo them. The profiles seem like needless over engineering to an already decentralized protocol when RSS and nostr feeds could live side by side. I think it might be easier to get a nostr app to add RSS reading and managing as a feature than getting a popular app to add nostr, but i'd love to be wrong. Yet another area where making nostr synonymous with Bitcoin community first makes it difficult building bridges with the wider general community.

Thanks for your insight. To me it sounds like it's just fully manual kind of like keep receipts unless the exchange you buy from provides you with what you need. If I had random small buys 2-10 dollars every day, 20 years later, things shifting around here and there, I can't imagine the ridiculous task of calculating the gains properly. Or even accessing the info to do that.

I actually have a #Bitcoin question that I think most of you can answer, so it's finally advantageous to be here being nostr dev updates.
If a person does recurring btc buys from a exchange, say every fucking day even, then also maybe adds here and there from gifts, zaps, etc. and then 50 years later cashes out, how tf would you calculate the cap gains based on how long you've had every little segment of money from a ton of sources? Does the currency (or rather the ledger location information?) itself hold all that historical buy/transfer date information and an app/wallet can just calculate all of in an automated way?

OK quick update. I found that setting which is cool. It actually rounds the content inside of the window container. However I found that the firefox about:config flag that enabled round bottom corners also works in floorp so I will daily drive it for a while at least. For some reason i assumed it used too much of its' own GUI to work with that flag. Thanks for the recommendation.

Random thing I'd like: Would be cool is a RSS client that uses NOSTR or a DVM as the decentralized RSS search source, but the reader itself showed RSS feed directly vs creating Nostr profiles. I just feel RSS is decentralized in concept enough not to need that extra middle man over-engineering, but what it lacks is a decentralized source for ease of use in setting up feeds and discovery for users. Nostr as a whole would be the decentralized repository to search for and add RSS feeds to this app. You wouldn't need people making specific RSS lists on listr either, just people using some extension like RSSHub to extract RSS urls and send out that as a note of a certain kind or hashtag or something. Not sure if people would appreciate a whole kind being dedicated to an RSS feed url, but certainly would make creating a client easier.

I hadn't yet but I downloaded it based on your recommendation and it's very cool. That being said, I'm sticking with Firefox nightly right now because I like the rounded bottom corners and theme I'm using and I just don't have that many special needs. That being said, I'll definitely occasionally use floorp and maybe after some playing with the crazy customization I'll switch.

This is the right choice. I don't generally have any response to self-portraits on social media regardless, but to the sentiment here I raise my glass. You look beautiful and many people have much less societally championed features than you. My girlfriend is atypical of many of these standards but she is outrageously gorgeous. People need to do all they can to focus on the voices of individuals instead of parrot squawks from their chosen or inherited groups. It will help us all waste less of our depressingly limited time here.

Can anyone here get me in the loop on what the current "hot" proposals or projects related to login/onboarding experience are? I'm taking mainly about things taking about targeting noob/non-tech. Nsecbunker seems cool but it seems to add not reduce confusion for a random new user but I can see how it could be packaged in a way that didn't.
Are there people or NIPs to follow where discussion is happening?
I'm wondering about anything related to fixing problems around people having their nsecs compromised, but there being no traditional password change type thing. Or just kidding their nsecs even. Also just ways to increase friendliness or presentation to the masses of idiots called humans. Really anything remotely related to that topic. Interested in people's ideas just because I find it an interesting challenge.

I check here every once in a while to see if it's not still just completely dominated by libertarian bitcoin googly eyed platidudes. it's still mostly that but it gets better. I used to come on here often just for nostr dev news but honestly until they work on a strategy for having more electic content I'll probably stay an infrequent lurker since it's a bit boring. I'd honestly rather use a forum or reddit type thing using nostr, the existing options are not there yet. any community relay related development gets me interested though.

Local coffee shop (PH Coffee) is now digital only and has a pay it forward system to help prime without digital means. They've been robbed probably 4-5 times. They were actually just broken into again, but they didn't get much this time due to the change. For most basic ass people small things like not getting all your money stolen (without making a huge daily security process for lower wage workers opening and closing the store) will rank above ideological quests. Anyways I see your point but I don't blame them.

This is an overbearing opinion. He's blending specific implementations based on corporate greed with multiple design styles that 1. Are not the same 2. Do not buy themselves opress.
If you had a clean Scandinavian minimalist design that was very abstracted/far from handmade/craft, and every person had an a decent sized personal office that closed (with blinds). People would not feel oppressed. They would decorate with bits if themselves or some people would keep it clear because they prefer clean visuals without distraction. Also you can plug in a fucking incandescent lamp for other lighting while still having the same design. A lot of people like working in light cose to daylight in kelvin. Not me but I know plenty.
This is just like someone thinking, oh throwing the baseball fast is better, so shooting it out of a potato gun is better for the game of baseball. He's just running with it far beyond logic. And he's forgetting that handmade can be just as oppressive with propaganda and forcing a strong specific style on people to say think and be this way or else.

I started a community in the current implementation (librearts) so I'm familiar, but people are working on community specific relays. These would let relay owners moderate their own relays more completely. The makers of nostr all have talked about smaller vs bigger relays being the focus. They don't want a system with just a couple relays that everyone's on because it hurts the decentralization and sustainability, but what that means in a global view is that you're not sure who's going to see what you post similar to the issue with mastodon, and that problem extends to the current implementation of communities. For global view this is less of a big deal since you are generally just posting very general things out to anyone following, but for communities, you want to rely in the fact that the whole community can see it including strangers who don't grow you. Community relays fix this issue. People subscribe to relays/communities that they want that can then be smaller relays (or groups of relays for redundancy), but can also be sure that everyone in that community will see the post. And the reason we would want an app is to create the best first experience where you are seeing things you like, and also it would be needed because it's a totally different app concept to the Twitter-replacement app that we're on now. This would be an app more akin to Reddit or Lemmy but with proper architecture where each community can govern itself, be a paid relay, or complete with another community. And an app would just help people sign up and pick topics/communities they like, and then they would immediate have a main feed of strangers posting about things they actually are interested in. The communities could assist choose to be secret and not report to any people running a directory/app. It solves the problem of too big relays, helps the problem of discovering things you like from people you don't even know to look up, and makes them onboarding process easy to get an app tailored to your interests.

Seeing everything built on nostr is bittersweet: social, communities, survey forms, wikis, journal apps, etc. Finally a protocol that is simple and open enough to see this kind of community input and software growth. But then the community has no urgency to create a more eclectic experience outside of circle jerking Bitcoin. It's very 1 note. Community specific relays and apps that utilize selecting them during user onboarding is one possible way to correct the course.
