I like them! I mainly use iPhone then have a Canon AE-1 when I want to use film. I like distorting and collaging images a lot, to bring some gothic anxiety into the mix, but I love the naturalism and framing of your shots.

They’ve been the go-to reference for a lot of the post punk revival that started in London in 2019/20. The original Black Country, New Road material drove the most comparisons, but I think it was a little overdone (critics thought comparisons made them sound clever imo). To me, Slint sit very squarely in Gen X apathy and I love it.

I would look past the illustrator’s work as they are not the author.
I think it was in 2013 that Prince said “the internet is over” to The Guardian. He was ridiculed for the statement at the time, but the gap between what an artist tries to convey and what the audience understands is often wide. I increasingly see the statement as very prescient. The internet isn’t what it was. Feeds are alienating, opt-in spam, and websites are a dying art.
On Nostr, we herald the ability to rectify much of this while we also paradoxically create an even more powerful and dangerous incentive: money for engagement.
On balance, I do feel it is likely to be an improvement: at the very least, the financial relationship between creation, creator and audience is direct and transparent. In an optimistic light, real artists and true quality will rise to the top and have the means to go further… but rarely does the utopian vision for a technology play out.
I remain hopeful, because the contemporary internet is indeed rather shite.

Lightnite/Satoshi’s Games definitely didn’t fail because of it being a development sinkhole, and it certainly wasn’t going to fix anything by switching chains.

While a legendary moment in music history, Prince was deeply unhappy with the night. He idolised James Brown and choked when he was invited on stage. Deeply competitive, he felt he needed to upstage MJ, but froze both on guitar and vocals. Hence the “weirdness” of his performance. Networks with low user bases but extraordinary reach are not Social Networks. They are Influence Networks. There are varying degrees of influence networks, and I believe this description better aligns with the monetisation model.
Don’t confuse them with Social Networks, which have essentially fallen apart (at least the 1.0 form).
…And don’t confuse Social Networks with Social Graphs.
The next social network could be built on this social graph, but there’s a lot to build.

I’ve been spending time on Bluesky. I really quite like it.
Mainly because what I’m interested in—all the musicians and creative people I admire—is readily-available, discoverability is decent, and the community engagement is present.
Threads, I’ve yet to try, but I must say it has zero appeal to me, and I’m very familiar with Mastodon/ActivityPub communities. I also can’t stand Instagram (why I like Olas).
As others are saying, talking about Bitcoin and Nostr all day is boring. To critique myself, even when I’m thinking about music here, it’s always with a v4v touch. “Setting up” over here is also really quite complicated.
On Bluesky I instantly found my favourite bands, and they’re posting cool stuff I want to see. I’m wanting to check it more. My X usage continues to evaporate.
Bluesky attracted normies and now it has a small network effect, because they don’t talk about Bluesky all day. No one there cares about what we care about over here, and that’s why it’s successful in attracting media & entertainment. It’s good to see things improving here, slowly.
It’s definitely possible Bluesky dies, but the social media world has changed for good imo. We’re in the unbundling era. Communities will become smaller.
Nostr needs to become cool. It’s too awesome, and it’s what I hope social media and the internet will be more “like”. Having all your friends and content come with you, wherever you go, is very cool.
Look at me, part of the challenge, writing about Nostr on Nostr.
