If you're experiencing the same thing I did: they changed the layout of the launch page a few weeks ago and the "join via browser" button is now bigger -- but I was so used to looking for the link in its old location that it took me a while to realize that it existed.

My Google Pixel just asked me to choose a default browser and search engine; I assume that this is part of some antitrust settlement or something.
I chose Firefox as my default browser a long time ago, but that wasn't one of the choices I was offered -- it was Chrome or a number of Chromium-based browsers I don't have installed, like Samsung's or Brave.
So I had to set Chrome as my default, then go back to the Settings app and reselect Firefox as my default.

Of course, one of the reasons that EU services are popular is the belief that the EU has the best privacy and data protection laws -- I don't know enough about Japanese law to say how they compare, either in theory or in practice.
But having in-country services might also be a plus for a lot of people.

There's a number of good, open-source friendly hosts for things like Git, email, and storage in the European Union or Switzerland now. I'm thinking of companies like Sourcehut, Codeberg, Migadu, and Rsync.net (an American company with a Swiss datacenter).
Are there any services like these based in Japan?

It's not just me, then. With a Web app as complex as Slack, it's hard to say if it's intentional or some programmer unknowingly making a change that proactively tries to get those permissions -- most of their Web devs have presumably already granted permission and would never notice the change and/or are using the desktop app.
