I pull articles actively from a configured set of public relays, theforest included. The thing is, we’re swimming in test content and auto-imports. What I’d prefer is to have the authors that actually expend effort on their content to have a way to signal that.

I’m mostly bothered by latency. I’m running a client that does event lookups server-side, trying to serve a pool of users simultaneously, reusing connections and collating reqs. I’m still tweaking the whole thing, and can’t claim to have it all figured out, but it seems to me that relays are aimed at browsers requesting latest events, and my typical filters by a/A, d, etc tags take a long time to resolve.

The only way to handle decentralized sources I have come up with so far, is to invite writers to sign up to be actively included by telling me exactly where their content is supposed to be, so I can fetch their content from their relays and also give them some feedback if it fails.

I keep thinking women used to hold up a lot of economically invisible structures, and were lured into monetizing their contribution in the job markets. The job market needed women more than women neded the job market.
The bait was personal financial independence, but it was at the expense of unmeasured social capital. The market absorbed a huge quantity of labor that had previously existed outside formal economic accounting. Care work, food preparation, child supervision, elder care, therapy, tutoring, cleaning, emotional support, and social coordination increasingly became services to be bought, outsourced, or institutionalized. This made the economy look larger, because more human activity is now monetized. But some of that “growth” was not genuine civilizational surplus. It was the conversion of formerly embedded relationships into paid transactions.
We are now, possibly, at the point of realizing we have misjudged the value of unpaid work and it’s scope.
This point is skewed female, obviously, and not the complete picture, but still.

The philosophy I’m building #decentnewsroom around is that no article is an island. Curation matters on multiple levels. Publications, follow packs, tag clusters.
What I’d like to achieve is to have readers return to it even if they are not reminded by a newsletter or a DM that a publication exists, but to treat it like a nice place to hang out and return to voluntarily.

There were multiple contradictory reports, but it was mostly a power play, because the government controlls the prices to a large degree. I’ve come to the same conclusion. We’ve been so conditioned, though, that it’s an urge to try and subsidize everything. I have the same debate with myself over and over trying to climb out of this artificial well.
I do wonder what the business strategy becomes when users pay? Because the current crop of mega corps all feed off of the network effects and that’s what they were feeding with all the freebies. They wanted businesses as customers and users as bait.

There’s a multi-step form that asks for details about the root index and the categories. Then you can add articles, or leave the categories empty. On the last step, you’ll be given events to sign.
The structure can be edited anytime, later on. The events are parametrized replaceable.
You’ll be able to add articles into the categories in the wizard, or from each article’s page, if you log in. For logged in users there’s a dropdown that lets you choose the category to place the event into, and a replacement event is generated for you to sign with the article included.

There will be miles of consecutive fixes for self-inflicted problems, when all that was needed was to adjust a too-tight constraint on some element that broke the flow. I’m not sure I follow. As far as I can tell, you’re saying that there are multiple ways available already to achieve a curated list on nostr. I’m aware. I just like this one for all the possibilities I can see for this and I’m trying to implement them to see if it will work out as I imagined. The root index event that describes the magazine is replaceable and can be updated whenever and the npub that created the magazine can also publish an RSS-like nostr feed.
An editor or publisher would create a magazine npub first, then the events, instead of publishing with their own npub. And the root event can be used as a reference to build out the whole magazine either with my client or a custom web interface in any style.

In nostr terms it’s nested curated publication events, kind 30040, like Alexandria uses, to define the magazine and its categories and possibly subcategories, and those contain a sorted list of articles. It functions as a folder structure.

The categories are up to the editor or publisher. Completely customizable. The current magazine is a showcase and the catagories are my own choice. It’s possible they only make any sense to me. The plan is to make it possible for anyone to create their own, on the scale of a specialized blog or a full blown newspaper with world news coverage.

But design wise, it’s possible to go multiple ways with this. Even so far as to allow a publisher to include a min amount in the index tags and have it honored by the client.

We arrive in the same place. All deletions need to be honored by someone. The assurance of trust can be provided by a relay or a relay and client combo on nostr in a very similar manner than in other places in exchange for some decentralization (and you keep quite a lot of the decentralization on nostr compared to elsewhere). Someone who considers deletion essential to peace of mind would consider this a service. Hence, a business model.
But a business should be taken seriously and lots of things built on nostr are more showcases than services and barely any terms of service exist. The trust is low because we seem to be in a sandbox. The fact that the sandbox sits in an open square is indeed a dichotomy.

All of those are business opportunities.
Deletion is likely a false aim. Almost nothing gets permanently deleted on the internet if someone decides to keep it, except in a datacenter fire or a similar backup loss situation. Self-hosting your content on your own auth-protected relay and not broadcasting widely gives you deletion in the same scope as running your own website. Then you have a sliding dial of trusting some third party where you weigh the service pricing against your requirements in exchange for less expertise required of you.
DMs are solvable by a network of DM-specialized relays that maintain awareness of their peers and a client that knows how to talk to them.
Username/pass logins are not constrained by technical requirements but liability. The user base needs to be big enough to pay for the legal protection of such a service provider, who is in essence a password manager. The current attitude of ‘here you go, but we’re not reliable’ is especially cringe for such a service. In a business setting, this can be done by a central authority per business entity.
As for follower counts. I know they matter, but they don’t have to be global or for everyone. Need an accurate number? Get it from a DVM or a service that will count it for a fee, because it requires a targeted crawl.

Yes. But I see centralization as a first step only and not the endgame. Aggregation is relatively simple to implement, as you said, especially of structured data. And it’s monetizable as is. I’m looking forward to the next part, the tailoring, which could swing a lot into decentralization. Going back to the start of this thread, global might not be as desirable down the line.

Sure. I’m thinking of monetizing the effort. I think there’s more value in curation, filtering, and selective processing that there is in raw data storage. The ‘global’ might become unwieldy and providers will drift into creating services tailored to a segment of users, countering the centralization. Smaller players can be competitive here if they have a creative way to surface a coherent subset of content.

It’s tempting to scrape and crawl everywhere because it is open and accessible. But sheer volume will surface as a problem. The whole point is that you don’t need to hold all the content yourself. Smart scrapers will only retain pointers to where the content was seen and not the complete compendium, and sort and process as they go. Keep this, dump that, convert to vector, save a summary, guess topics, feed to an agent,… then forget.

Key rotation doesn’t automatically include subkeys. The above proposal only solves for key rotation and it solves it with a soft solution that doesn’t require widespread adoption either from users or clients and is backward compatible. It defaults to separate identites for each npub, as they are now. A DVM could serve all the required data checks to clients and relays, so they are not required to run extra services or complete implementations for themselves.
I don’t have an equal solution for subkeys.

We also have local politicans spout nonsense like “we’ll issue special bonds and get people to transfer their savings into gov bonds, since banks don’t give them any interest on their savings and gov bonds are awesome in comparison.” All savings are third-party managed assets already. I’m trying to point out the issue of a potentially misleading sense of accomplishment. It’s hard to judge expertise in most circumstances and it’s harder to judge an AI. It’s possible to pick up bad patterns from it unknowingly especially as a beginner. Maybe the soufflé chef never actually made the soufflé before either and just makes it up on the spot.
But yes, writing code is already of relatively little value. And we are all guessing which of the related skills will stay relevant and how long.

This is already a problem. Explaining backend and architecture design choices to devs who only ever worked on a framework that wraps all kinds of internals is hard. Right now, senior devs that started before all the fancy stuff keep a lot of the teams afloat by understanding where it all came from and vetoing mad ideas.
