Probably leek moth caterpilars. There's no practical method of prevention as far as I know. At this time of year I would lift the onions and use. Dispose of the leaves.

Yes good soil generally makes a big difference. It's well worth doing that.

You can do that that but better to use seed potatoes about the size of a large egg as they give a bigger yield and are much less likely to suffer any problems in the ground.

It's calm, cold and sunny so I had a quick look round the plot after lunch. The robin appeared as soon as I arrived. There was thick ice on the composter lid pond which I cleared then refilled. Now home for a welcome cup of tea and a couple of biscuits.
