Earlier this year I posted photos of a woodland peony (Paeonia mariei ) in bloom my garden (photo 1). Now the flowers have gone to seed and the seed capsules have ripened and opened and the result is pretty trippy (photo 2-3).

Ok another plants and hiking trip. This time I visited Pahto or Mt Adams, the second highest peak (12,281 ft / 3743M) in Washington state. I've always been fascinated by its remoteness. Few Washingtonians ever even see it except on the distant horizon--it lies sandwiched between the vast Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the Yakima Indian reservation, and there's hardy even a paved road that passes near it. A short thread.

Bloedel Reserve part 7. The grounds here are immense. The staff are in the process of reclaiming one of the several huge meadows from sheep pasture into native wildflowers. Photo 1 here is the pre-reclaimed area. The other photos are of the section that's done. There's some blanket flower (Gaillardia, yarrow (Achillea millefolium), and California poppy (Eschscholzia californica which isn't actually native but so naturalized it may as well be).

Last week I took a trip to the Bloedel Reserve, an historic estate on Bainbridge Island just outside of Seattle. Today it's a botanical garden that has a some pretty interesting plants. To get there from Seattle, you take a ferry across Puget Sound. If you e never been in a car ferry before, it's quite an experience. Out here it's just a fact of life. (In this day, we got a Coast Guard escort, probably because of the World Cup matches in Seattle). A short thread. #PNW #gardening

Hiking Gothic Basin part 10. There's a small alpine lake up here called Foggy Lake. Here's it is, still partially frozen. If you look closely you can see some people there for scale. I'm not sure why they call it Gothic Basin but I'd like to believe it's because these incredible triangular peaks look a bit like the rooflines of Gothic cathedrals. Hiking Gothic Basin part 9. There's not much growing up here except heather. It's blooming already and the snow has barely gone. The growing season up here is only maybe 4 months long so plants get busy quick. It's also why these alpine ecosystems are so fragile--every broken twig takes years and years to regrow. If those little flowers look familiar it's because blueberries are also in the heather family (Ericaceae).

Hiking Gothic Basin part 6. We're nearing the tree line now. The trail is getting gnarly. And can I say this is a *hard* trail. It's steep and rocky and in quite a few places you have to use your hands to pull yourself up.

Hiking Gothic Basin part 5. Look at the absolutely stunning little tableau of plant life on this stump. Looks like it consists of more Primula jeffreyi, a wee little deer fern, and a kind of club moss called Lycopodium clavatum (which apparently some people call elk moss?). It's a living fossil--club mosses are primitive plants that were amongst the first to colonize land almost half a billion years ago. #hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

Hiking Gothic Basin part 4. Dodecatheon jeffreyi/Primula jeffreyi. Shooting star is the common name for these. I see the white ones pretty regularly but I seldom see the purple ones. This one is growing by a mossy seep in the rock.

Hiking Gothic Basin part 3. Aruncus dioicus or goat's beard, a plant found all around the Northern Hemisphere that almost no one notices except when it's flowering. Aquilegia formosa, our native columbine. Formosa in this case just means well formed and has nothing to do with Taiwan.

Hiking Gothic Basin part 2. Lowland Forest is damp and still soggy from snowmelt above. Contrast the giant leaves of Western skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) with our native horse tail (Equisetum hymenale). Cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum) in bloom-- look at all the diverse little insects stuck into it. These plants are edible but they look very much like a couple others that are really toxic, so maybe don't eat them.

Here's another hiking thread with plants--my trip yesterday trip to Gothic Basin, in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, 2 hours' drive NE of Seattle. It's right near the old mining ghost town of Monte Cristo which has its own crazy history. That's for another day. Today we're going up, up, up past the snow line. A short thread.

Thank you for the link, these photos are very helpful. It may well be botrytis. That seems the closest match. We had almost no frost last winter it was be if the warmest on record so I'm sure it's not frost damage. The clue for me is the "disparate" photo. Some clusters affected and others not. Which is how mine are. Tough luck then I think this bush may have to go.

People mulch around strawberry plants in summer for 2 reasons: to keep the roots cool (and the ground moist in our summer dry period) and also to keep the strawberries from touching the ground. In theory you could use anything that performs this function. People used straw traditionally because it was cheap and available. I've heard of people using dry leaves, pine needles (it's a myth that this will acidify your soil significantly) or arborist wood chips. https://strawberryplants.org/mulching-strawberry-plants-in-the-summer/

Ordering ladybugs doesn't work as well as you might think. They ship them dormant and they time it so that they're just waking up when you get them. When you let them out their first instinct is to fly away... from your garden. I did this with my daughter a few years ago when she was little. We got 500 ladybugs and not one of them stuck around to eat our aphids. Others I've talked to have had identical experiences.

yeah it's really a cool place. I did the lower part of the lake shore trail a few years ago in August and it was lovely then. But I liked this upper end better. And another plus-- no power boats this time of year. It was super quiet. I still can't get over the color of that river water though.

This weekend I took a trip up to the top of Baker Lake, in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington, fed by snow and glacier melt of one of our 4 active volcanoes, Kulshan or Mt Baker (just look at the color of that water!) It's a fantastic time to hike along the river and lakeshore, the trees haven't fully leafed out and there's a lot of life happening on the forest floor. Plant-heavy thread ahead.

It's not exactly a #bigfoot sighting, but maybe the next closest thing.... I saw a mountain beaver! They're not actually beavers, but a kind of "living fossil" rodent that's found only in the #PNW. I've been been hiking #Washington for literally decades, and known about them for almost that long, but this is the first time I've actually laid eyes on one. Oh my goodness I had one of these plants for years! And I had completely forgotten about it. I absolutely loved the berries. Really unique kind of floral flavor. In my climate they only ripened at the very end of autumn. I think I lost it in a cold snap a few years ago--they're very hard to find here in the US, my reliable source may not be cultivating starts anymore. I'll have to check. Thanks for jogging my memory!

Also, honestly it says something about the fabricator's choice of materials that it can't survive a bit of adhesive. In theory you should be able to go out there with some goo-gone and it'll take that right off. Not sure why that cost $3k unless the finish wasn't bonded properly and it peeled off with the adhesive.

There is a great book called "The Genius of Trees" by Harriet Rix that addresses this question. She shows how plants manipulated the atmosphere, manipulated the crust of the earth, then manipulated animals to do things like pollinate their flowers and carry their seeds around. She ends the book by posing the question "are plants manipulating us?" Namely by being ornamental, tasty, etc they get us to spread them to new locales. It's a fascinating concept.

I was at a symposium with a bunch of garden designers last weekend and there was a discussion of trying to move away from the term "invasive" as it ascribes too much intentionality to the plant. Suggestion was "introduced disruptive" which is not as catchy but probably more accurate.

One of my favorite rhododendrons in my garden is blooming early this year. It's been a mild winter. This is Rhododendron sinogrande (no common name) which is native to Southwest China. In the wild it can grow more than 30 feet high and those leaves can reach three feet in length. It won't get that large in our climate. I particularly like the partially emerged buds when the scales are just coming off.

So here's my haul: a small leaved Mahonia from Asia (similar to our Oregon grape but with unique foliage and habit). A small Australian fern called Doodia media, a relative of our native deer fern (you can see the resemblance). Some Astelia chathamica 'Silver Spear'-- this is a plant I already grow, it's one of my favorites, and I want more.

Next up: a very different plant nursery. Xera plants offers "climate adapted plants for the Pacidic Northwest". They have made a number of their own introductions (new cultivars) and like Cistus, they sell many plants that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere. They used to have a retail location in downtown Portland, but now sell directly out of their grow houses in Sherwood. chatting with the owner, he said they got tired of carrying plants back and forth.

The nursery is arranged in a most unusual fashion: plants are grouped by their geographical origin and have vintage names like "Laurasia" and "Araucana". There are dark nooks and side areas filled with exotic and unexpected plants.

Cistus nursery has its own landscaping showcase. Manzanitas and rosemary in bloom. Surprised to see a crinum lily here--but not too surprised. Oh and every nursery needs a cat. This one is named Mabel or something and she's friendly until she isn't.

I had the day off work yesterday so I took a day trip to lovely Portland Oregon. I stopped at a couple plant nurseries. First up: Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island. Sean Hogan, the owner, is a well known garden designer and his residence (just behind the nursery) has been featured in magazines and glossy coffee table books. Sauvie Island has an unusually mild microclimate that allows plants like this eucalyptus to thrive. A short thread

As an alternative, there's another route into the park. Find the Lake Eleanor trailhead on the map. It's on the North side outside the National Park boundary. You can park there and hike in a little less than 3 miles and that gets you to Grand Park on the North side of the mountain. From there it's relatively easy access to the Northwest side of the park. I'm not sure it's any easier from Paradise/Longmire but worth considering.

I've only done small parts of it. Two places that stand out for me: the area around Indian Bar on the East side has got some spectacular views of the mountain. Berkely meadow on the North side just East of Skyscraper Mountain is a particularly pretty meadow. Spray park is really big and very pretty (lots of bears!) but I don't recall it having the same dramatic views as the East side. But you'll likely have it all to yourself now that the bridge to Mowich lake is closed.

Apologoes to everyone who knows this but I'm old:
Blog is short for "weblog"
"Weblog" was coined after "ship's log"
Both those items are by definition a collection of entries. The "log" is the collection.
"Log" is short for "log book". Sailing ships would record their speed at regular intervals by throwing a log overboard, attached to a rope, at the bow. They timed how long it took for the ships stern to pass the log, and wrote it in the "log book."

They are one of my favorite flowers. Mine is a "flowering quince" so it doesn't really produce fruit. I had a quince fruit tree once but it didn't survive very long. I like the fruits in cranberry sauce or in preserves.

Here is an unassuming little fern in my garden. Asplenium trichomanes, maidenhair spleenwort. You wouldn't guess that it has one of the largest natural ranges of any vascular plant on the planet. It's found on six continents for sure and possibly now in Antarctica as well. It has very tiny spores that can easily get wind-blown high up into the atmosphere and right around the planet. It grows most anywhere but prefers rocky places with adequate moisture. #gardening

Sun breaks in the garden show off my very favorite spring flowering shrub. Edgeworthia chrysantha, related to Daphnes, sometimes called Taiwanese rice paper shrub (but there's another plant with that common name). Fragrant yellow flowers before it leafs out, hardy in USDA zones 7-9 or so; part sun.

The sense of motion is really fantastic. I wonder if work like this could even have been conceived in the era before digital special effects became common in film. Like certain paintings were only possible after the advent of motion pictures, this feels like a digital motion graphic made physical. On a practical level I'm trying to imagine how it got fabricated and installed. The welds (I'm assuming it's welded) are very expertly hidden, at least in the photo.

Don't give up! Mint is ridiculously easy to grow in most circumstances. This sounds like more bad luck than anything. If they're arriving in heavy clay that means the provider is just digging them out of their yard or something. Moving around plants growing in garden soil carries a risk of invasive pests or diseases. I'd avoid sellers that do that. I suspect what you got was a freshly dug start that may not have had enough established roots on its own to survive root washing.

So are all those barrels connected by hoses or do you have to move them into position by the downspout? Or do you have a hose that you can snake to each barrel? And how long does it take to collect 3000 liters of water off that small roof? Asking because the former owners of my house had rigged up a system a bit like that but it's fallen into disrepair and I've always been at a loss as what to do with it

How these crocuses ended up in the lawn is beyond me. I didn't plant them. I've been gardening here for 17 years and I haven't ever seen them before. Do crocus cultivars ever self sow?

Rampion is another name for corn salad which I think is the more common name. Scorzonera is also called salsify (I think the narrator mentions that) which is the more common name for that I think. There's some salsify growing on the community college campus near me. Not even cultivated, it's just a weed in the parking lot.

NFGF part 8
The real value of the show is the 5 days of lectures by leading horticulturalists and garden designers. Which I didn't have time to attend this year. The talks alone are worth the steep admission price. And of course there's a huge plant market. Tillandsias, carnivorous plants as well as the usual bulbs and houseplants. You can pick a name stone for your carnivorous plant. All the ones that say "Seymour" are taken.

This was my favorite of the show gardens. Another greenhouse! Really thoughtful attention to detail, interesting and unusual materials, all put together by a well known Portland floral designer who does some really unusual work.

Greenhouses seem to be really in fashion this year. There's always some, but they're more prominent this year. This one is particularly nice. Tropical plants and a fish pond inside.

Some of the exhibits are just cringe. Note the wildly unrealistic plantings and the spots where they just popped 4" square pots of ground covers randomly into some potting soil.
