Ordering ladybugs doesn't work as well as you might think. They ship them dormant and they time it so that they're just waking up when you get them. When you let them out their first instinct is to fly away... from your garden. I did this with my daughter a few years ago when she was little. We got 500 ladybugs and not one of them stuck around to eat our aphids. Others I've talked to have had identical experiences.

My first thought was that an arborwright crafts arbors (as in grape arbors or similar garden structures) much as a wheelwright crafts wheels. But that's with no context so 🤷

There is a great book called "The Genius of Trees" by Harriet Rix that addresses this question. She shows how plants manipulated the atmosphere, manipulated the crust of the earth, then manipulated animals to do things like pollinate their flowers and carry their seeds around. She ends the book by posing the question "are plants manipulating us?" Namely by being ornamental, tasty, etc they get us to spread them to new locales. It's a fascinating concept.

I was at a symposium with a bunch of garden designers last weekend and there was a discussion of trying to move away from the term "invasive" as it ascribes too much intentionality to the plant. Suggestion was "introduced disruptive" which is not as catchy but probably more accurate.

One of my favorite rhododendrons in my garden is blooming early this year. It's been a mild winter. This is Rhododendron sinogrande (no common name) which is native to Southwest China. In the wild it can grow more than 30 feet high and those leaves can reach three feet in length. It won't get that large in our climate. I particularly like the partially emerged buds when the scales are just coming off.

So here's my haul: a small leaved Mahonia from Asia (similar to our Oregon grape but with unique foliage and habit). A small Australian fern called Doodia media, a relative of our native deer fern (you can see the resemblance). Some Astelia chathamica 'Silver Spear'-- this is a plant I already grow, it's one of my favorites, and I want more.

Next up: a very different plant nursery. Xera plants offers "climate adapted plants for the Pacidic Northwest". They have made a number of their own introductions (new cultivars) and like Cistus, they sell many plants that are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere. They used to have a retail location in downtown Portland, but now sell directly out of their grow houses in Sherwood. chatting with the owner, he said they got tired of carrying plants back and forth.

The nursery is arranged in a most unusual fashion: plants are grouped by their geographical origin and have vintage names like "Laurasia" and "Araucana". There are dark nooks and side areas filled with exotic and unexpected plants.

Cistus nursery has its own landscaping showcase. Manzanitas and rosemary in bloom. Surprised to see a crinum lily here--but not too surprised. Oh and every nursery needs a cat. This one is named Mabel or something and she's friendly until she isn't.

I had the day off work yesterday so I took a day trip to lovely Portland Oregon. I stopped at a couple plant nurseries. First up: Cistus Design Nursery on Sauvie Island. Sean Hogan, the owner, is a well known garden designer and his residence (just behind the nursery) has been featured in magazines and glossy coffee table books. Sauvie Island has an unusually mild microclimate that allows plants like this eucalyptus to thrive. A short thread

The sense of motion is really fantastic. I wonder if work like this could even have been conceived in the era before digital special effects became common in film. Like certain paintings were only possible after the advent of motion pictures, this feels like a digital motion graphic made physical. On a practical level I'm trying to imagine how it got fabricated and installed. The welds (I'm assuming it's welded) are very expertly hidden, at least in the photo.

How these crocuses ended up in the lawn is beyond me. I didn't plant them. I've been gardening here for 17 years and I haven't ever seen them before. Do crocus cultivars ever self sow?

Some of the exhibits are just cringe. Note the wildly unrealistic plantings and the spots where they just popped 4" square pots of ground covers randomly into some potting soil.

NFGF part 3. I've been coming to this show on and off for years. The gardens have gotten more and more impressionistic over the years, and they're now more like art installations. This one is super fun but kind of inexplicable. It also features a little crevice garden, which I love to see. They're becoming popular all of a sudden.

NFGF part 2. Most of the show gardens are sponsored by plant nurseries or hardscape suppliers, like this one sponsored by a landscape stone company. So, like, if you want a replica of Stonehenge in your backyard you'll know who to call. Photo 2: check out this clever artificial bonfire that works by combining one of those sonic water-fog makers (like you see in terrarium shops) with some orange LEDs. It's pretty convincing if you don't look too close.

I stopped by the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival at the Seattle Conventiin Center yesterday. This show happens every year. It's huge. The highlight are these "show gardens" which are sponsored by various landscape industry vendors, retailers, and organizations. This one happened by be done by the Putallup Indian Tribe and it features all native plants of the Pacific Northwest. A short thread

I've heard about this treatment, does it work well? 70F soil is a pretty high bar around here, might be closer to June 😆 Also do you know if this means you need to water your lawn through the summer dry period in order to keep the nematodes alive? Or is that what the fall reapplication is for?

Bloedel Conservatory part 3. A lot of the plants are readily recognizable as houseplants, but not all. It seems like the larger specimens are permanent, but quite a few of the smaller plants are grown in greenhouse grown and added as they come into bloom, and periodically swapped out. Still, it takes a lot of skill to create arrangements like photo 4-- naturalistic but attuned to human aesthetics.

Bloedel Conservatory part 2. This conservatory has the usual complement of tropical plants. Less often seen is one that has free-flying birds inside it. The bigger parrots seem to have their wing feathers clipped but the smaller ones fly through the canopy and poop on people.

Visited the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver BC yesterday. It's named after Prentice Bloedel, scion of timber baron Julius Bloedel and relative of Seattle arts philanthropists Virginia Weighted (Bailey Wright). Bloedel reserve in #BainbridgeIsland is their other botanical legacy. There's a very similar geodesic dome tropical conservatory at the St Louis Botanical Garden. #PNW #Vancouver #Houseplants

I'm sure it hasn't escaped your notice but I'll bring it up here: 3 of the "Four Horsemen" of the New Atheist movement (Dan Dennett, Richard Dawkins, and Sam Harris) were associates of Jeffrey Epstein and his "Edge" salon. Despite their excoriation of the bigotry of Christian fundamentalism, they eventually outed themselves as insufferable bigots in their own manner, Dawkins (anti-trans, anti-gay) and Harris (anti-Muslim) in particular.

Field trip to British Columbia this week. We stopped at the Sasquatch Museum in Harrison Hot Springs, about 2 hours' drive East of Vancouver. It's actually the visitor center for the town, which is mostly closed in the winter (the hot springs resort is open). They have some cheesy statuary, a life sized fiberglass sturgeon (sturgeon found in Harrison lake), and a very perturbed eagle.

Seconding what someone else said, there are "patio" varieties of tomatoes that will do great in a (large) pot. Easy herbs are mint, oregano, and chives, they'll all grow great in even small pots in part shade.

Hiking marmot pass part 7. More lichen, this is one of the commonest forms we see here in the Pacifice Northwest, called witch's hair (Alectoria sarmentosa). Here it's growing on a hemlock tree.

With the #PNW experiencing the "winter that wasn't" there's almost no snow in the mountains and temperatures are unusually warm. I took the opportunity to go hiking. This time it's the continuation of a hike I took a few weeks ago, continuing to follow the Big Quilcene River in Washington's Olympic Peninsula up to its headwaters at Marmot Pass, on the border of Olympic National Park. Hiking Big Quilcene part 5. The river here doesn't seem to have been badly affected by the December "atmospheric river" (massive rainstorm), which devastated a lot of river lowlands in the Cascades. One can see evidence of torrents of water coming down the slopes of the valley but the riverbanks are only eroded in a few spots and the shore vegetation is mostly intact. Moss and lichen are on every tree branch here.

Hiking Lake Ann part 9. Look at the blueberries! The plants have already lost their leaves but the berries are still good and have such an intense flavor. The plants that grow up here are only a few inches high and when you see them like this it's more obvious that they're in the heather family.

Last weekend I made a trip to Marmot Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington's Cascade mountains a few miles North of the little town of Roslyn (famous as being the filming location for the 1980s TV show Northern Exposure). Photo 1: the trailhead is near Hyas Lake. That's Cathedral Rock in the distance. 2: the trail crosses the famous Pacific Crest Trail a few miles in. I love that these signs are so old the tree is kind of eating them.

Wow, those are some beautiful shoots. I haven't heard of them getting out of hand the way bamboo does--I'd guess they are easier to control? I have another cultivar of Disporum longistylum ('Night Heron' I believe) and it's
nowhere near that size and it actually struggles a bit where I've got it. But from your photo I am guessing you have a more persistently moist location than I do and that makes a big difference.

In other plants, like around where I live, elevation definitely makes a difference in flowering time. Plants that flower in May in my garden at 500 feet elevation don't flower until August up in the meadows at 5000. Of course those meadows are actually snowed in till June, so I don't know if that holds true at your latitude.

I have these in my garden-- they came with the house. Used to be a lot of them. Then I noticed fewer and fewer. I looked and looked at plant nurseries but couldn't find any more for sale. Finally I found some. I was talking to the seller and she told me that they suffer from a stem canker (bacteria) that eventually kills them, and that's why you see so few any more. Not sure if that's true where you live but I thought it was interesting.

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 7. You can't go wrong with waterfalls and columnar basalt. Orange lichen on rabbit brush. Also does anyone recognize these giant reeds? Is this invasive pampas grass or something native? I don't know many of the plants here at all. 7/8

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 5. Here's some closeups of the main rock attraction here: columnar basalt, a result of ancient lava flows (way more ancient than the lakes). I keep wondering where all this lava came from-- the nearest existant volcano is probably Mt Rainier, over 130km away. 5/8

Hiking Ancient Lakes part 4. This is a state park. Strangely, the trails aren't very well marked and in order to see all the good parts you have to drive round the outside to a couple different trailheads. Hiking Ancient Lakes part 3. This place is called "Ancient Lakes" and it's right by "The Gorge" amphitheater (WA people will know this place for its outdoor concerts). Hiking Ancient Lakes part 2. The Columbia Gorge (which has the Columbia River running through it) is kind of unimaginably huge. The snow capped ridges in the distance are like 50km away and the river itself is beyond the nearer cliffs and lakes, but before the snowy ridges, hidden in a literal gorge some 500(?) meters below any of the ground you see here. 2/8

Spring cleaning this weekend to get ready for new gardening season. First, the compost needs to be turned. The first thing to know about compost is that there are a lot of ways to do it, and a lot of people are convinced that theirs is the only right way. I ignore them. I am a lazy composter. I don't balance my greens and browns, I don't take temperature readings, I don't turn the piles more than a few times a year. I use the three bay system.

You probably know about this, but for anyone who wants to check if your #nativeplants are native, you can get a quick range map for just about any species native to or naturalized into North America here: https://bonap.net/NAPA/Genus/Traditional/County The only catch is you need to know the botanical name. In the US it shows county-level presence, but in Canada it seems to only be at the province level. Still, it's pretty cool.
