Okay, correct me if I'm wrong, but you understand then that:
Open source software is software licensed in such a way that at the very least, the source code is made publicly visible.
I'm fairly sure that some "open source" licenses do not protect the public's right to use the source code freely. It is enough that the source code be merely visible for some to call their software license "open source" and get away with it.
Free software is software that is licensed in such a way that at the very least, the source code is not just publicly visible, but also publicly accessible, and legally usable, in that it can be copied, used for any purpose, shared, modified, republished as is, and published with modifications, granted that all such derivatives be similarly protected as part of the commons, granting the same rights to free use that were granted by the license of the original.

I need to understand first why the authors decided not to speak to the reason "OSS" became a popular construct and what the alternative, FOSS, is in comparison. I need to know why they did not mention that in this article at all.
It is too deliberate a choice with too malicious an apparent motivation for me to just assume I understand and dismiss as deceptive malice from people who seem in several other posts to stand firmly against neoliberalism and the autocratic tech sector.

It was painful to read because I worried the authors (you) were simply conflating FOSS with OSS and throwing the baby out with the bath water. It would have been a relief to see anywhere in the article even once a mention of the solution, referencing the genuine copyleft strategy, as opposed to only discussion of the problems with the imposter.
Even an aside alluding to the rise of the term 'open source' via Tim O'Reilly and Torvald's sellout capitulation would have been all I needed not to feel sick to my stomach thinking things had just taken a turn for the worst. Not that they haven't... But hopefully you know what I mean. Thank you for clarifying somewhat. I'm really impatient for the book now and am reading all I can find of what you've published.

Please tell me of some instance where communities have taken ownership of their land and the data centers on it.
There are too many data centers, of course, and of course we must stop the construction of new ones and repurpose some of the old ones.
But for any data ceners we might use in a sustainable way, we need community ownership of them... How do we do this...
I know this is like asking how to make world peace, but, frankly, I'm interested in how to do that too, so lmk what you think.

Trying to organize democratically is sometimes infuriating because of "the tyranny of structurelessness" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tyranny_of_Structurelessness)
To think there're no hierarchies if there's no explicit structure just hides existing hierarchies and removes the means to change them.
In case you need to hear this too, from the article: "Freeman suggests [to solve this problem] formalizing the existing hierarchies in the group and subjecting them to democratic control."

I'm gonna try to pressure Indivisible HQ to fund a Decidim instance with Voca hosting so everyone in the US can start forming regional citizens assemblies.

Same here. I read the Indivisible guidebook and it explicitly says if your local chapter isn't for you, start a new one. There's no limit to how many chapters there can be in an area.
But when I told the leaders of one chapter that I was starting a new chapter they automatically assumed it was an antagonistic thing to do and acted like I was being crazy and aggressive to do it.
