okay I looked around a bit and if you want
- decentralized chat
- with "multi-room" spaces like discord
- and plural-friendly features like changing your nickname and avatar per-room
then the best option seems to be Cinny client for Matrix: https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/cinny/
you can change your display with /myroomnick and /myroomavatar .
there's really no perfect alternatives sadly, Discord just does too many things and nobody else does ALL of them
but Matrix seems to have the best ratio of good stuff to bad stuff right now

ex: "YouTube used to have high-quality closed captions written by volunteers for free, but landlorded itself by removing that feature in favor of low-quality auto-generated captions and paid captioning services."
means the same thing as cory doctrow probably meant when he said "enshittification" but like. that word is way too easy to misuse. I think this one is clearer.

I'm #colorblind and I use https://xkcd.com/color/rgb/ frequently.
Randall 'xkcd' Monroe did a survey of over 100,000 readers where he showed them random rgb colors and said "what would you call this?" and afterwards he did his best to sort the results into the most popular color names and the colors they refer to.
It's like a box of Crayola for the internet. Finally, my colorblind self can grab a sample of "dark magenta" that doesn't just look like "grape purple" to everyone else.

so now when I want a color on my website I can just write `color: var(--xkcd-off-white)` or so on. it's really convenient :)

bonus protip: one time I was doing a sleep study and the nurse said "you'll need to run this self-test. when the green LED turns on, start the test, and when the red LED turns on, stop it again."
I asked "how can I tell which one is the red one?" and she was like "...huh. yeah that is a problem. let's see."
we did a trial run, and guess what? the engineer thought of this! the green light is solid, but the red light blinks slowly!
remember that there are lots of tools at your disposal besides color!

IN BRIEF: I would like to improve society somewhat. What's a project that would love to have me?

If I could pick one thing to change about software: I want to make it more usable for non-technical folks.
I want better interfaces, both text and graphical. I want undo buttons that work, and when something is not-undoable I want to make sure the user knows what they're committing to. I want desktop notifications that can be easily filtered so you only get the ones you want. I want html editors for art and scrapbooking, that still give you full control over your CSS but also let you drag and drop an image into the document.
My best skill is technical writing. I'm very proud of this guide I wrote recently about how to add markdown to your website, assuming you already know html.

I've also done my best to document everything I've learned about self-hosting, since when I came into the hobby it seemed like "container" was a magic word people threw around without explaining why you even want one. I still need to work on this but I think it's a good start:

my second best skill is scripting. I've written scripts in python and javascript, and I've dabbled in windows cmd, linux bash, and the occasional lua file. I'm a good team player too, here's a script I collaborated on with SArpnt and it was a really cool experience!

Rocknix is a linux distro that targets 'retro handhelds' like Retroid and Anbernic. Those devices normally run Android, which is currently in full fuck-you mode, so if I were to buy a retro handheld I would be running Rocknix on it instead.
However, bad news: I asked in the Rocknix discord if i can count on them to take an anti-fascist stance, and their response was, in a word, "no".
Specifically, I asked if they were centrist, they gave me a "no politics" warning, which is a pretty clear answer to that.
If anyone else on the team wants to correct me, I'll gladly edit this post.

hot take: esports are only real sports if the game is self-hosted and moddable. like, anyone can buy a baseball bat and play however they want, and you can also do that with some retro games because of emulators, but if you try that with e.g. LoL you'll get banned.
y'know what we call stuff where you can only play if a certain company says so? that's a game show. at best.

it is a cult! you know the whole "Roko's Basilisk" thing? That got loose on the "less wrong" forums, which probably started as an honest attempt to be smarter with money but evolved into a literal AI cult. These people believe that there is no limit on computing power, and therefore a God AI will "eventually" exist, and that it could be "any day now, so we should prepare."
It has all the classic faith-based arguments:
- we won't see it coming because a God AI will be able to disguise itself
- we won't be able to reason with it because it will be a master manipulator and convince us to do what it wants
- it will know all and see all and so we have to make sure it's on our side
and of course, roko's basilisk adds:
- it can threaten to simulate you and then torture the simulation, which of course is the same thing as threatening to torture the real you since you wouldn't know the difference, right?
they had no mental defense for this. they honestly believe it's "inevitable."

here's a fun trick: I arranged these shapes I want to cut such that, after tracing the edges with knifebot, I can slice the page with a regular straight line cutter, and be left with a 9x6" area suitable for a catalog envelope.

fair point. I think you *might* approve of Deno and Nix since they at least check that the hash matches the version in the lockfile?
at any rate, Hunchentoot is kinda important to what i want to do and it has like a dozen other dependencies that I would have to build myself if I don't use quicklisp. :/

SBCL and Janet both seem sane enough (SBCL less so but I guess I could install a sanity library)
my biggest issue with both of them now is that they don't have a great way to install dependencies. you have to install a dependency installer. I'm spoiled by Python and Node that come with one as part of the install process, and Deno is even better because I don't have to remember a second executable. Janet's "jpm" is at least easy to understand? how do I install packages in common lisp exactly?
edit: okay, apparently for this you go to a completely separate website (quicklisp.org) and download a lisp script and run it. sure, I guess that makes sense. would be nice if it was bundled with SBCL but ah well.

alright, fedi, lay it on me: what Lisp should I use? my requirements:
- easy to install on windows (as good as python or better)
- sane names for common functions ('head' and 'tail' instead of 'car' and 'cdr')
- library support (an https implementation would be nice but is not strictly required)
Currently considering:
- janet
- easy to install with `winget`
- seems arc-esque? I liked arc.
- chez scheme
- only supports up thru R6RS tho, would be nice to use R7RS-small
- also I looked at some sample code and it has stuff like 'cddr' ???
- steel bank common lisp (SBCL)
- the classic
- lots of libraries
- might be worth learning regardless
- I'm not doing the variable indent thing though, tabs ftw
edit: I'd like to start by making an http api, and then try making a matrix chat bot.

you know what mastodon desperately needs? LISTS. there should be a system where you can make lists of people and then follow/block a whole list at a time.
right now there's a problem where I want to be in a bunch of cool local feeds but I don't want to make a ton of duplicate accounts. if those worked like lists instead this would be a non-issue.

So... is Mastodon inherently anti-accessible? I feel like there's some weird sorta "undiscoverable by design" sentiment on here sometimes. Is there a way to find out, for instance, if a specific real life person is on mastodon using their given name, without already knowing what instance they're on? Some sort of tool to search like, all the top public instances at once? I don't want to stalk people but it'd be cool to like... look up a band or an artist and see what they're up to.
