Last Notes npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow The Scots Baronial style Rutherglen Town Hall. It was designed by Charles Eilson and built in the 1860s. Most people's view of this rather fine building is spotting it in the distance as they zoom along the nearby M74, but it's well worth a closer look. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow One of the strangest things about the abandoned Shandon House near Helensburgh is this sign. The building is owned by the Ministry of Defence, and overlooks the Faslane Nuclear Submarine Base on the Gare Loch. It also borders on the Faslane Peace Camp. Even given this, the sign is odd, and to me, it doesn't even seem quite to make sense. It also automatically makes me think it is there for polictical cause (whatever that means!). npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow The abandoned and decaying B-listed Scots Baronial Shandon House near Helensburgh. Built in 1849, it was designed by Glasgow architect Charles Wilson, one of the most important architects of his time who was responsible for designing much of the Park District area of the city. Last occupied in 1986, it's currently owned by the Ministry of Defence. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow A hippocampus (or sea horse) riding on a wave on Stockwell Street in Glasgow. Created by Andy Scott, it was erected around 1992. Mythical aquatic equines was a subject Scott would return to later in his career, but in a much larger form, when he designed the 30 metre tall Kelpies on the Forth and Clyde Canal in Falkirk. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow Stone setts lining the ground in an area of woodland in Dawsholm Park in Glasgow. This is one of a number of surviving remnants from the Dawsholm Paper Mill. This is the rear of the Willow Tearooms on Sauchiehall Street, which Charles Rennie Mackintosh redesigned, along with Margaret MacDonald, in 1903. This included this alteration to the rear extension which had been added in the 1890s. Even though few customers would ever normally see it, it's still got elements of Mackintosh's distinctive style, including the bow windows and the asymmetric chimney stack. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow In 1901, the Scots-born Andrew Carnegie was the richest man in the world. Built in 1903, it was one of the first wave of libraries built in the city using funds provided by Andrew Carnegie, and is one of seven designed by James R. These heads are on neighbouring door surrounds on 1870s townhouses on Westbourne Gardens in Glasgow. It's unusual that they're both looking away from their own doors rather than towards them. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow Unlike the natural gas which replaced it in the 1970s, town gas was a mix of volatile compounds and somehow it was discovered that if it was bubbled through milk, it produced a purple mixture which, while potentially lethal, had an intoxicating and mildly hallucinagenic effect when drunk. Known locally as Electric Soup, this was a cheap tipple favoured by teenages and alcoholics. The name was later used as the title of a short-lived Glaswegian underground comic book series. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow Gas holders Number 4 and Number 5 of the former Temple Gas Works as seen this morning from Dawsholm Park in Glasgow. Built in 1893 and 1900, respectively, by the Barrowfield Ironworks Ltd for the Corporation of Glasgow Gas Department, they stored town gas created by heating coal in the gas works. It's for an Odell Night Latch Key, of the type shown on the right. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow The former Lyon Printing and Stationery Factory on Renfrew Street in central Glasgow. William Lyon was born in Troon in 1845, and established his printing and stationery business after moving to Glasgow in 1867. By 1885, he not only had this factory (where he made the world's first printed personalised Christmas cards), but also shops on Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street. Designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, it was built in 1870. The upper floors have been largely empty since the 1980s and has been covered in scaffolding since the late 2000s. That was until the last few weeks, when it was removed so work could finally begin on restoring the building. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow Love this projecting stained glass fanlight above the entrance to the Hat-Rack at 144 Saint Vincent Street in Glasgow. Designed in an Art Nouveau style by James Salmon Junior, the Hat-Rack was built in 1899. This is the type of building that helps makes Glasgow's traditional architecture quite so unique. While this street has some fantastic buildings, many are let down by their ground floor retail spaces. With relatively little effort, these could be altered so they're more in keeping with the architecture above them, which would greatly improve the local streetscape. It was designed by the well-known, and rather wonderfully named, Edinburgh architect Hippolyte J. Blanc. This is the time when the Earth's northern hemisphere reaches its maximum tilt towards the sun, meaning the sun appears at its most northern point in the sky. Designed Crawford and Veitch, its distinctive square corner tower was based on one on the Canal Boatmen's Institute at Port Dundas. This, in turn, was in based on a tower from Glasgow University's Old College campus on High Street. Neither of these buildings still exist. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow 1850s blonde sandstone Classical style tenements on Kelvingrove Street in the West End of Glasgow. While the city is more commonly associated with the late Victorian and Edwardian red sandstone tenements, this was the style favoured in the earlier part of the Victorian era. It is, unfortunately, pretty much unsolvable problem created by climate change. The moisture that used to fall as snow in winter (and melt slowly), now falls as rain (and runs off quickly), which destablises the slope. Add to this a lack of freezing in winter to hold the loose post-glacial deposits together, and further landslips are almost inevitable. It's dedicated to Barry from Eastenders and is near the Rest and Be Thankful in the Arrochar Alps, about an hour's drive from Glasgow. Further down, there's the former Commercial Bank of Scotland building on the corner with Gordon Street. Also the Glasgow Herald Building, the former Burtons store, and in St Enoch Square the original subway station. Near Sloans, there's the original Cranston Tearoom. Burnet's 1890s banking hall on Ingram Street in Glasgow. Designed by Thomas S. Cordiner, it was built in the mid-1950s. Love the triangular profile. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow A spiral ramp leading up to a pedestrian walkway over the M8 in the Anderston area of Glasgow. This is needed because the motorway, built in the 1960s, sliced this community in two. As a result, land which used to be occupied by homes and businesses has become a dead space, now occupied by a spiral of concrete, and has been for the last 60 years. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow Chimneys against this evening's sunset in Glasgow. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow It's always nice to see this yarn-bombed bench back in the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow. It's a glazed brick wall with a curved corner transitioning to a sharp right-angle mid-way through a single brick, and it's apparently called a Lark's Tongue. In April 1804, a meteorite was seen to land at High Possil in the north of the city (a fragment of which is shown on the right in this photo). On the right is a rather non-descript modern equivalent. These are part of the bridge which carries Great Western Road over the River Kelvin. Designed by Bell and Miller, it was made by the Sir William Arrol Iron and Steel Works and it opened in 1891. This gives a chance to see some of the massive girders which support the station's main concourse. The facade facing on to Argyle Street was substantially remodelled in the 1890s by David Barclay, as were parts of this facade. This included adding a monogram consisting of a interlocking pair of Cs above the entrance at the base of the stair tower, which stands for Catherine Cranston who commissioned the redevelopment as part of the tearoom she operated in this building. npub1904tzc22w2nra46qss9emd3k37n0fx58y50kne2upnj3lzy6u4msfytf7j This Is My Glasgow A rather wonderful Arts and Crafts style Edwardian villa with Scots Baronial style details overlooking Bingham's Pond on Great Western Road in Glasgow. Built in 1907, it was designed by John Ednie for Archibald MacKellar of the Finnieston Engineering Company. It was later owned by John Graham Dow of the handkerchief manufacturers Dow and Frame.
