During COVID-19, the big employers in Wuhan were brought into a meeting with government officials. The general warning of that meeting was that if these companies did opportunistic mass layoffs they would find themselves in deep, hot water rather rapidly.
Basically telling the rich folk that they're taking a hit from the battering the economy took, just like everybody else did.

Of course the article frames this in terms of warfare. As if American industry and military has a **right** to that substance and the Chinese are interfering with their God-given ownership of everything no matter where it might happen to be found.

Yes, but which consensus and when?
There's people today working off the LONG-debunked "consensus" of "Alpha Males" in wolf packs. That was once consensus. It is no longer.
There was once consensus that gender and sex were the same thing. This is not the current consensus.
And a lot of people in the atheist movement, even the pro-science ones, are behind the times with their scientific consensus. (And to be fair, it's REALLY hard to keep up! SO MUCH SCIENCE!)

That's Amtrak's exact PROBLEM. They're trying to run it like a business instead of a public service. The result is a focus on saving money to the point that the product doesn't do what it's meant to do.
The country that has the largest and arguably best HSR system in the world did the exact OPPOSITE of running it like a business. China's HSR, outside of some very specific routes, operates at a net LOSS.

There are three reasons for her return to China.

Also capitalism isn't really all that great at generating wealth either when it's left unfettered. Unfettered capitalism has done the literal *opposite* of generating wealth in the west in recent decades. It's made a few *individuals* very wealthy, but on the whole western economies have done very badly at even keeping people at the levels they were at in the '70s, not to mention expanding their economic situation.
And the fewer fetters on the capitalism, the worse the outcomes.

So, let's start with the headline. "Why China built..."
Let's clear this up right away. "China" didn't build shit. Thousands of Chinese workers who work for independent construction contractors did. Contractors who are privately owned businesses. (Note the plurals all along!) The dome was designed by an engineering firm who used the materials research of various structural materials firms, and all of this was governed by an lead construction firm.
Why were none of these named?

I'm not "slightly alienated by" scripted adventures. I'm actively upset by them. To me it undermines the *entire point* of RPGs: it's YOUR imagination and YOUR "story". You're not the spectator. You're the agent.

Once I grokked that myself, it influenced how I ran games from that point onward. I don't have "plots" in my games. I have Polti-style "dramatic situations". And how they progress is determined by how the players interact with them; which roles they took in the situations and how they tried to resolve them.
And I thank ICE's modules for the insight that led me to this style.
(BTW, the back of the adventure modules had entry points, but that was easy to miss if you just flipped.)

Yeah, they were different from *everybody* in the day.
What you had to grok, which was not spelled out, is that you were presented a *situation* (large scale for campaign modules, small scale for adventure modules). You were given locations, people, relationships, etc. and then you just kind of let the clock run from that snapshot. Things went on according to the setup unless and until the players' characters changed things. Only the "ready to run" series were like others' modules.

Maybe you could give me a bit of insight into how ICE operated. ICE modules were different from EVERYBODY's stuff back then, whether Middle Earth, Shadow World (or its predecessor) or even the setting for HARP (I forget its name).
Even the "adventure modules" were more like mini-campaign modules, and the campaign modules were these monstrous beasts with a bewildering amount of information and places, yet left so much stuff open for the GM to improvise on in between. I loved them!
