This story from Cascade PBS covers an old-fashioned case of requirements tailoring for a government contract to favor one company over another, but in this case the staffer doing it used a chatbot to commit the fraud without having to work so hard. So chatbots do improve productivity — in government corruption.

The sad thing was that the web devs all knew this to be true but nobody listened to them, so they had to ask my team to measure it and show the people who listened to us. All that tracking code stuff is super customer hateful. It say “we’re going to use your computer and slow it the heck down, to collect data for us that your probably don’t want is to have”.
Collect data server side.

Once some years ago, as the head of a Data Analytics team at a large fashion retailer, I was able to demonstrate to to the VPs the website speed cost of all the third party tagging and cookies on the website. It kicked off a project to get rid of all that crap from “partners” and dramatically improved page load times. That was fun.

I saw and ad for Apple’s newest iPhone and the selling point tagline was “thinest iPhone ever”. Why would that be something I need? Is phone thickness an issue people are having? I can barely hold on to mine as it is. I need a big case just to have something to hold onto so I’m not dropping it all the time. I think we need thicker phones. Apple is working toward a thin slippery sheet of glass.

It’s hard to imagine a permanent end to the war without some entity other than Hamas in control of Gaza, and without a change in political leadership in Israel. Are not the right-wing in Israel and Hamas each dedicated to the destruction of the other?

When Aaron Brown was still a local anchor in Seattle he gave a lecture for my college journalism class. Some student complained about the poor quality of local TV news and he told us ‘TV news is not the news, it’s a TV show about the news. If you want the news, read a newspaper’. And of course he was right about that.
