Perhaps it'll help to reframe things a bit... think about an airplane. If the masks drop, you're instructed to put your own mask on *first* - not as an act of selfishness, but because you'll be the next one to need help if you don't. It's the same thing. If you can't think straight from exhaustion, there's no way for you to be the best you can be.

That's probably the worst possible version of "your interpretation of other people's standards"... Yes, it takes time to get out of that - and quite possibly a good therapist to help you along the way. I think the big question would be - what are *your own* standards? What do *you* want to accomplish, what kind of person do *you* want to be?

To be clear, I hold myself to some very high standards as well; however, I know those standards are my own and achievable - and I rarely struggle to meet them, unless I'm in dire need of rest. The one big change I've made is to recognize the early warning signs and heed them. The contingency planning that comes with that I can handle. The key was knowing what to expect.

Here's a question, though - is it your own standard you hold yourself to, or is it your interpretation of other people's standards? If the former, take time to rethink your priorities. If the latter... Why?

Exactly. I think that's the key difference for me, too. I'm kinda fortunate in the sense that I've never been able to actually mask enough to not stand out, so I'm used to being the odd one out... It's just that I now know that I'm not fighting some sort of "broken" part of my brain, but am actually just wired a bit different.

It worked perfectly for me... Until I couldn't keep up with the pressure anymore. Then I'd crash, find somewhere else to go and repeat. Until that last time, when I was too completely done to even consider another restart. That's when I found out what almost everyone else guessed long before...
