A KYC Influencer's Manifesto (Satire, or not!)

Surveillance is necessary for an open society in the digital age. Privacy is suspicious. A private matter is something that should eventually be reported, indexed, profiled, and monetized. Identity is the power to permanently reveal yourself to institutions.
If two parties have some sort of dealings, then every intermediary should also have a copy. Exchanges, payment processors, analytics firms, compliance vendors, advertisers, governments, and data brokers all deserve a memory of your interaction. The more copies that exist, the safer society becomes. Why should only the participants know what happened?
Since we desire compliance, we must ensure that every transaction is tied to a government-issued identity. Anonymous transactions are relics of a less enlightened age. Every payment should produce another row in a database, another profile to enrich, another graph edge to analyze. The best citizen is a perfectly indexed citizen.
Therefore, an open society requires KYC everywhere. Cash is dangerous because it leaves no trail. Bitcoin was almost dangerous too, until we surrounded it with mandatory identity verification, blockchain surveillance, travel rules, sanctions screening, risk scores, and endless compliance checklists. Progress.
Privacy in an open society also requires trusted third parties. If you wish to transact, first upload your passport, your face, your address, your biometric data, and perhaps a video turning your head left and right. If your documents expire, kindly do it again. Trust is established not through cryptography, but through collecting ever-larger databases of personal information.
We cannot expect individuals to make decisions for themselves. Corporations, surveillance vendors, and regulators know what is best. Their incentives are pure, their databases are secure, and their data retention policies are forever. If they occasionally leak millions of identities, that is merely the cost of safety.
Information does not simply want to be free—it wants to be centralized. Every KYC provider is a future data honeypot waiting to be discovered. Every breach is another opportunity for identity theft, phishing campaigns, SIM swaps, extortion, and lifelong exposure. Think of it as contributing to the greater good.
We must defend society from privacy by ensuring that no transaction can exist without permission. We must come together and build systems where every action can be monitored, every relationship mapped, every purchase analyzed, and every citizen scored.
We the KYC Influencers are dedicated to building permissioned systems. We defend society with surveillance, blockchain analytics, compliance APIs, biometric databases, and identity verification providers. We celebrate the collection of personal data because someone, somewhere, might find it useful.
KYC Influencers produce content. We know that someone has to normalize surveillance, and since people might otherwise choose privacy, we're going to explain why giving away your personal information is actually freedom. We publish threads, podcasts, conference talks, and sponsored content assuring everyone that "if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear."
We don't much care if databases are breached, if innocent users are de-banked, if dissidents are monitored, if journalists are exposed, or if activists lose financial access. These are unfortunate externalities on the road to compliance.
KYC Influencers celebrate regulations on cryptography, for encryption without identity is unsettling. The act of anonymous communication removes valuable metadata from institutions that believe they deserve it. Fortunately, regulation travels well, and surveillance standards spread even faster than open-source code.
For surveillance to be widespread, it must become a social norm. People must voluntarily upload their identities, normalize invasive verification, encourage others to comply, and shame those who value privacy. A society where everyone watches everyone else is, after all, the safest society.

We hope you never ask why every database becomes a honeypot, why every breach exposes millions, or why cryptography solved many of these problems decades ago.

Agreed, but influencers played a big role on selling nostr as everything solution on the short term while seeking for cheese 🐀
It just happens that they change narratives every two days and that hasn't been a net positive for the protocol adoption. Numbers show it. They are just filling their pockets while selling opium.
