These are the hard things that one just has to go through. It’s interesting to see people melt down over things that seem trivial to me, but I’m brought back to a time when those things would have caused me to melt, too.

It’s not just died suddenly.. it’s life shortening illnesses that take a bit to kill you. My kids from my prior marriage were all given the entire course of covid shots against my repeated demands that they not be given any of the shots. One of the kids developed IgA nephropathy shortly after. It’s incurable and often gets worse over a span of years… ten or twenty.. the end result isn’t great usually which is early death. It turns out that a bunch of people developed kidney diseases after taking these shots. The killings will continue for decades and many people will have forgotten about this experiment and not even associate it with the health problems and early death that will keep coming.

I had one over a decade ago in life v1. They’re not particularly fast to filter, but it should filter a full bucket of water in a half day or so.
You mentioned that you soaked the filter elements in water for a while so it should be good to go there.
Where is the water coming from that you’re filtering?

Local models is where a bunch of attention of going to head. There are some really good models out there already, maybe not at the level of Sonnet 4.6, but not far from it either. With enough backlash, they’ll return Claude code to the pro plan.

I had a former friend actually report me to the FBI back when they were publicly fishing for information about people going into the Capitol. I’ve always had an interest in weather, but I didn’t become a meteorologist. Earlier tonight, I fired up my weather app and was learning how to use it and correlate different observations. I started tracking the tornado that eventually went through Kankakee, IL and a few other towns and substantially destroyed those towns. Some people lost their lives because of these storms. I’m thankful that I have a bed to sleep in tonight and that I’ll probably live to see another day. Not everyone is that lucky. Thank you, God.

Lately, I’ve been working with self-hosted models partly to educate myself about how all this works and fits together, but also to be more self-sufficient. In a relatively short amount of time, I had Claude create me an agent that interfaces with my Ollama models. This was to get the agent going quickly. Now my agent is updating itself as I type this. For the first time it wrote two Rust apps last night. Just little test things. Today, I asked it to evaluate its code base and suggest added functionality to the agent to make it more advanced. It came up with a 20 point plan ranked by priority. The plan looks reasonable so I gave it a subset of things to work on and it’s chewing away on it. The only downside is I’m averaging around 4 tokens/sec, I only have CPU inference running qwen3-coder-next, so it’s pretty slow. Still, I can give it a task and let it chew on it while I go do something else.
As you noted, this field is expanding rapidly and it’s quite amazing what these systems can do.

I just posted about Claude making me a custom LLM agent. The produced agent is working pretty well as I work through teething issues, however it’s slow due to hardware limitations. Totally blows my mind away.
Proprietary software’s days may be numbered. Someone said software is becoming a throwaway item. I have to agree. It’s no longer a problem to create custom software for one-off situations and throw it away when you’re done with it for the cost of some of your time and a Claude subscription.
Two examples of the throw away software thing was a license key finder I wrote to find two digits unknown to me of a Windows license key. I had received a new license key on paper and got a little too excited scratching off the scratch off stuff covering part of the license and inadvertently scratched off two of the digits. The distributor was no help and neither was Microsoft. My solution was to have AI (probably ChatGPT at the time) write me a powershell script that iterated through all the combinations and tried activating windows with the key each time. I gave it the alphabet of characters to try, which is shorter than 36 characters, and it went to town. About 10 minutes later it stumbled on the missing digits. Problem solved. Throwaway item. I’ll never use that code again. I also don’t know powershell.
Some months later, my wife was doing genealogy work with a specific website that had a treasure trove of data. She tried reaching out to the owner of the data set to get a copy only to find out he died literally a week earlier. Figuring he was unlikely to complain about slowing his site down, I instructed Claude to create a scraper to scrape all the data from the site before it disappeared. After some iterations over a day or two, the scraper downloaded everything from the site we needed and stored it all in JSON format so we can do whatever we want with it. Again, a throw away item. We’ll never use it again because it was completely customized for this website which itself was custom.
I’ve been using Claude to write a lot of stuff lately for personal and work use. It’s good and fast. I’ve mostly been using the Sonnet models, with Sonnet 4.6 being quite good. Opus 4.6 is better, but it also costs 3x as much to run for not anywhere near 3x results over Sonnet 4.6.
For better or for worse, we are at a serious turning point in the world because of these systems. You might as well make it work for you because it’s not going away.

LLMs are kinda dumb and basic, even with all their training. What really makes the LLM something useful is an agent which enables tool usage and makes it so much more useful.
I had Claude write me an agent, which it’s been doing a very good job at as I’ve been iterating new features. Before long my own agent and LLM should be able to handle updating itself. Actually, it probably can do that now.
The LLM I’m using is qwen3-coder-next:q8_0. It’s producing around 4 tokens/sec on CPU inference only so it’s not blasting any doors off things, but it does work. If I’m not in a hurry, it’s fine. It’s still faster than I would be doing all this myself.
This stuff is crazy and cool.

AI is a tool. As such, it needs to be used properly just like any tool. As with any transformational (no pun intended) technology like LLMs, there will be some people that get hurt or otherwise use this tool inappropriately. AI systems should be used with proper training, and that includes being personally educated ahead of time, and being able to think critically. Use AI to help you, not supplant you. This is especially important with kids.

What locally hosted open-source LLMs are people using for #coding and having good success with?
I’ve got a MacBook Pro M4 Pro with 48 GB RAM and 2 TB drive space. Loading qwen3-coder-next:q4_K_M on it results in the MacBook going about 25 GB into swap. Surprisingly the machine is still usable, although it does show signs of stress.
Through my employer, I have access to (read as I run this) a Proxmox cluster with 5 members. 3 members each have 768 GB RAM on them. Each also has either 36 or 48 hyper threaded cores spread across 2 NUMA domains. I’ve loaded up qwen3-coder-next:q8_0 on it because the model takes about 85 GB RAM. I strapped Ollama to a single NUMA domain. The cluster members don’t have any fancy GPUs on them so I’m left with CPU operation only to run this model. As you might expect, it’s not the fastest thing around, but it does run.
Anyway, I’m just exploring and trying to see how useful these open source models are for mainly for coding, but other tasks as well, relative to Claude or Gemini Pro, both of which I have paid access to.
What have you had reasonable success with coding?

GN all. Been a busy day. For some reason I decided that I didn’t have enough to do so I pulled out the anode rod from my water heater to check its state. Put it back in and had a very slow leak that presented itself over an hour. Pulled it out again, applied thread tape, and put it back in. Seems solved now. Hope so. I’m going to sleep and it’d be really great to not wake up to a wet basement.
