The average user doesn't care and will never care. That's why decentralized providers still need to offer something else of value that's better. Still worth highlighting decentralized systems and explaining their importance, but over time that will only appeal to a segment of the population.

One less fun thing about nostr is that I seem to need to use 3 or 4 clients at a time, as each one seems to display different things, or have a different feature break each time I try to use it. It's nice that there ARE so many options, but would be nicer if I could just use one or two and stick with them rather than having to constantly have all of them open.

That's a potential solution to spam (though probably not a very effective one). But it's not a solution to targeted abuse about someone. Not all of the problems in an unmoderated space are about when you are name checked by an abusive user.
Nor does your solution deal with things such as child sexual abuse material, which is illegal.

I don't know the specifics there, but I doubt the issue is wanting "some 3rd party to censor them." Rather they want to use the platform in a manner that does not result in them being harassed/spammed. Moderation is very rarely about "censorship," and often about community building/community norms.

Perhaps I just haven't used nostr enough, but the part I've been trying to wrap my head around regarding relay moderation is... that I haven't seen any simple system that explains what each relay's moderation philosophy is. It feels like as you sign up for relays that should be made clear, but none of the clients I've played around with seem to present relays in such a manner.
It seems like the moderation details, if they're all going to be relay-based, should be front and center.
Separately, perhaps I don't understand the tech enough, but relay-based moderation seems like it would only solve for some classes of moderation issues, not all.
I think your idea of having the moderation be a separate service, enabling relays/clients to opt-in makes more sense... but it does leave open the question of who sets up such moderation services, who staffs them, and why...

In playing around with nostr again, I just came across Alby. It *looks* super slick, but I have no idea if it's legit. I could dig in and try to figure out... or I could just ask here and see if anyone has any opinions.

I pointed that out to someone else earlier today and they insisted that there is no such thing and all VR must be bad. It is interesting how our views of new technologies are often anchored in the original failings.

Thanks for posting this (and thanks to the guy who alerted me to it...). I think this is an important discussion, but as some have noted in the replies, it's a somewhat different challenge in a decentralized system like nostr.
The moderation aspect can be somewhat more decentralized and/or distributed as well. Indeed, you can create multiple answers to the question and see what works best.
But, still, if you don't take out the garbage, you'll get branded as a garbage dump. So the reputation of any social media, protocol or platform, requires at least some thoughtful responses to these questions.

The ability to meet/talk to people from anywhere about anything... is powerful. And by powerful I don't mean "good." It has good sides and bad sides to it. Understanding those is important. But, yes, I think a protocol approach does *help* with many of these challenges...

But the risk there, and the reason I have the "but also no" in my original response is that there does remain value in at least exposing people to other viewpoints and ideas, and not locking people JUST into smaller, more narrowly focused communities.
