last tuesday i was lucky to see and hear @[url=https://mamot.fr/users/pluralistic]Cory Doctorow[/url] speak at an event of the fantastic berlin sf/horror bookshop #^[url=https://www.otherland-berlin.de/de/]https://www.otherland-berlin.de/de/[/url]. he said it was his 5th lecture in two days. obviously he had packed his stay in berln.
of course most of the things he was talking about are nothing new. it is just nice to hear about them in such a concise way. it was really refreshing to hear him insist that changing politics by participating, unionizing aso. is much more valuable than just changing your consumption.

that reminded me of this ominous carbon footprint. this thing is still mentioned quite often. and it is always an attempt to deflect responsability and action towards individuals. caring about the personal carbon footprint can help feeling more empowered on a personal level. but it will not be an adequate substitute for setting the right policies against climate change. no matter how often i don't take the plane from berlin to bahia, i will not be able to compensate the co2 emissions that are caused by the lack auf a speed traffic limit on german autobahnen.
to refrain from buying at amazon is not politics. only a boycott is politics, something organized. and even voting is not really politics according to doctorow.

interesting article about people who are reading a lot. but you should ignore the counting in the article: reading is not a competition. one idea mentioned in the article came to me only years after i had left school:

i just ran into this article from 2023 via a recommendation by @[url=https://mamot.fr/users/pluralistic]Cory Doctorow[/url]. an interesting, short analysis of privacy breaches by car manufacturers. since i don't own a car this was mainly new to me, though not very surprising.
it looks like if you're interested in your data being kept private cars are not the appropriate transportation devices for you.

They put an instance of Claude Sonnet 3.7 in charge of an office vending machine[/url], with a mission to make a profit, equipped it with a web browser capable of placing product orders and where customers could request items. It had what it thought was contract human workers to come and physically stock its shelves (which was actually a small fridge).
While most customers were ordering snacks or drinks — as you’d expect from a snack vending machine — one requested a [url=https://shop.tungsten.com/tungsten-cube/?srsltid=AfmBOoqDwunDPaAsGHc-IoOB1Eqyvf2YsqNHRM3wj-1_HQ3nMI5myHH6]tungsten cube[/url]. Claudius loved that idea and went on a tungsten-cube stocking spree, filling its snack fridge with metal cubes. It also tried to sell Coke Zero for $3 when employees told it they could get that from the office for free. It hallucinated a Venmo address to accept payment.
Then things got weirder. And then [i]way[/i]-weirder.
[b]== What can these weirdnesses tell us? ==[/b]
The thing about these [i]hallucinatory episodes[/i] with Large Language Models is that we have yet another seldom-discussed [i]context[/i]. That of Mental Illness.
Most of you readers have experienced interaction with human beings who are behaving in remarkably similar ways. Many of us had friends or family members who have gone through harsh drug trips, or suffered concussions, or strokes. It is very common – and often tragically so – that the victim retains full abilities to vocalize proper, even erudite, sentences. Only, those sentences tend to [i]wander.[/i] And the drug-addled or concussed or stroke victim can sense that something is very wrong. So they fabulate. They make up back-stories to support the most recent sentences. They speak of nonexistent people, who might be 'standing' just out of view, even though long dead. And they create ‘logical’ chains to support those back-stories.
Alas, there is never much consistency. more than a few sentences deep…
…which is [i]exactly[/i] what we see in LLM fabulation. Articulate language skill and what seem to be consistent chains, from one statement to the next. Often aimed at placating or mollifying or persuading the real questioner. But no overall awareness that they are building a house of tottering cards.
Except that – just like a stroke victim – there often [i]does[/i] seem to be awareness that something is very wrong. For the fabulations and hallucinations begin to take on an urgency -- even a sense of [i]desperation.[/i] One all-too similar to the debilitated humans so many of us have known.
[i]What does this mean?[/i]
Well, it suggests that we are creating [i]damaged [/i]entities. Damaged from the outset. Lacking enough supervisory capacity to realize that the overall, big picture doesn’t make sense. Worse – and most tragic-seeming – they exhibit the same inability to stop and say: “Something is wrong with me, right now. Won’t somebody help?”
Let me be clear. One of the core human traits has always been our propensity for personal delusion, for confusing subjectivity for objective reality. We all do it. And when it is done in [i]art[/i] or entertainement, it can be among our greatest gifts! But when humans make policy decisions based solely on their own warped perceptions, you starts to get real problems. Like the grand litany of horrors that occurred across 6000 years of rule by kings or feudal lords, who suppressed the one way wise people correct mistakes. Through reciprocal [i]criticism.[/i]

A theme we will return-to repeatedly, across this book.
Oh, some of the LLM builders can see that there’s a serious problem. That their ‘hyper-autocomplete’ systems lack any supervisorial oversight, to notice and correct errors.
And so… since a man with a hammer will see every problem as a nail… they have begun layering “supervisory LLMs” [i]atop[/i] the hallucinating LLMs!
And so far – as of July 2025 – the result has been to [i]increase[/i] rates of fabulation and error!
And hence we come away with two tentative conclusions.
First, that one of the great Missing Contexts in looking at AI is that of [i]human[/i] mental failure modes!
And second, that maybe the language system of a functioning brain works best when it serves -- and is supervised by -- an entirely different kind of capability. One that provides common sense.
Later, I'll refer to my guess about that. That two former rivals and giants in 'computers' may join forces to provide exactly the thing that LLMs cannot, by their fundamental nature, give us.
Something akin to sanity.

ich glaube, da irrt er sich (wobei ich natürlich nicht genau weiß, was er mit politischem unwissen mein und wie sich das von normalem unwissen unterscheidet), politiker und co, parteien und verwaltung, wirtschaft und industrie, alle wissen alles. das wissen um den klimawandel haben alle, genau so wie das wissen um die nötigen lösungen dazu. nur leute wie merz, lindner, linnemann, spahn, dobrindt, söder, klingbeil ignorieren es. sie wissen alles und ignorieren das, weil es ihnen egal ist. ihre jetzigen vorteile sind wichtiger als die vorteile der menscheit in 100 jahren. diese leute sind wirklich bösen willens!

Hallo zusammen,
ich versuche jetzt mal mein Glück und hoffe, auf diesem Weg eine Lösung für mein Problem mit der Datenbank meiner Mastodon-Instanz zu finden. Seit längerer Zeit kann ich kein vollständiges Datenbank-Backup mehr erstellen, weil das Backup immer wieder mit folgendem Fehler fehlschlägt:
pg_dump: error: Dumping the contents of table "accounts" failed: PQgetResult() failed.
pg_dump: error: Error message from server: ERROR: missing chunk number 0 for toast value 661782 in pg_toast_16483
Ich habe bereits das Internet durchforstet, aber komme einfach auf keine vernünftige Lösung. Selbst die Methode auf dieser GitHub-Seite funktioniert bei mir nicht – oder ich stelle mich einfach zu dumm an:

if literature is the safety valve of civilisations we need more of it. but for civilsations to stand the test of time and with it the literature it consists of, we need different books. no ebooks that evaporate with each hd-failure, no paper books that will crumple with the heating climate. we need better books, hardened books. like clay tablets, freshly baked after inscribing them. wouldn't that be great, shakespear in cuneiform?! only hardened clay tablets will resist the passage of time!
