The only other options people hear about are 'join a club.' Interesting clubs aren't that easy to find. Hanging out at the local pub has obvious downsides, though I guess it sorta works in some countries.
We need more ways for people to casually meet others that aren't trying to manipulate you or program you with religious doctrine...

I see this as quite a problem in the US. The default place a lonely person has to go is usually a church - where you can expect a modicum, possibly even a seeming profusion, of welcome. This is their hook. They provide automatic acceptance - of sorts.
This is also how the right wing fascist regime convinced people to let Trump take over the country - propaganda through the churches.

I also know smart capable people who acknowledge that christianity is mostly b.s., but they still go to church, because that's what they have always done, it's what all their friends do. Their whole social life is built around it.
They cling to it because they can't bear to think of life without it. It's the 'cornerstone', literally. They even refer to it that way in some churches.

It's the most fundamental jenga block of our culture - for 20 centuries now.
Take that away and find out about all the problems it was patching for people this whole time.
No one wants to look at it. I'll keep my lucky rabbit foot, thank you very much.
We need that comforting narrative too, for meaning in life. Take that narrative away and it's just brutal nature and lots of ways for nihilism to manifest.

Religion is like this little imaginary lucky rabbit foot that you carry around in your pocket and gives you some confidence to carry on and believe something better is possible in a way that you could not justify through the usual material means.

All the atheists I knew in life could effortlessly dismiss religion because they didn't need it. I.e. they were good looking, smart, rich or had some other advantages going for them.
