Last Notes npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate If they're trying to get away from American infrastructure, the best argument would likely be that the Mastodon Inc (nonprofit) and Bluesky PBC are both registered in the United States. On the technical side, Nostr: * Has permanently referencable events and redundancy, meaning content can be archived and accessible beyond what AT/AP can do. * Is a lot more flexible as a protocol. AFAIK you can't do ebooks and geocaching on anything other than Nostr * Scaling a Nostr service is a lot easier and less resource intensive than scaling a large Activity Pub or AT based service * Doesn't rely on DNS (heavily American influenced) or a centralized servers for identity management Technical Drawbacks: * Key based identities would need to be abstracted for the average user. Good luck having them manage their own keys. Culture wise: * Nostr also lacks some of the extremists that have congregated on ActivityPub (both left and right) and AT (left). Sure the BTC people can get a bit loud sometimes, but it's nothing compared to the dark corners of the other two protocols. Finally, while it'd likely be considered a drawback to the German government, it'd be a benifit to the people that Nostr is decentralized enough that they can't rule it with an iron fist like they're likely eyeing with big centralized AT/AP services. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate "Dont forget to inform your local tweakers that every flock camera contains 2 grams of gold and 2 lbs of copper" Random comment I ran across and feel worth sharing for no apparent reason 😉 npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Well I just unintentionally jumped the tracks on my motorcycle. I'm driving along a rural road at 55mph and thinking I'm seeing a hill until last minute realizing it's just really mounded up train tracks. Was way to close to slow down so just gambled on going full send while strait and stable as apposed to slower but less stable if I hit the breaks or let off the throttle. Figured I was about to put my airbag vest to good use but I stuck the landing. In all honesty, it was probably a rather pathetic jump to anybody who's done stunt riding, but it was certainly a bit of a surprise lol. #motorcycle npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I'm a fan of I2P if you're unaware of it and looking for alternatives. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://nate.mecca1.net/posts/2026-08-21_permanant-reference/ A new #blog post about decentralized protocols for archiving web pages and other content. Goes over #IPFS #blossom and #nostr npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Borris looks really cool. Highlights seem to work, and there's not a lot of other Libre options to TTS a web page. Offline reading is also a nice touch. #nevent1q…fg7t #nevent1q…6tve npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate "The default register reads as trying to sound clever rather than trying to be understood. It comes off as especially annoying and arrogant when it is wrong, triggering extreme annoyance that when working with it for many hours on a daily basis, is like an extremely toxic co-worker that one cannot get away from." What do people expect? It was trained in part on Reddit users. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate #asknostr has anybody developed a Nostr based guestbook for static sites? It's something that I thought I might try to implement on my site, and while I could probably just vibe code it, it'd prob make more sense to use a human written implementation if one already exists. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I'm growing a bit. Something ate my best tomato plant, but I've gotten a few harvests of beans and lettuce so far. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate What's up strangers and fellow Nostr enthusiasts? I'm really burnt out on my job. It's been a mess even since the interview process, and I'm not sure I'm even going to make it past Monday next week. I like the (theoretical) job description and the people there, but it's been a ride of shifting job descriptions, poor compensation, and missed/partial paychecks, and I think I've hit my limit. I'd do a tell all blog post, but lol, I think you guys would think I'm writing fiction at this point. This afternoon after moving metaphorical mountains to get a thing finished after the second week things were implied that'd get better and that didn't, I took an early lunch break and left all my work stuff on site on the mental insurance I could just leave and never come back. I told my boss this morning that things really need to change. Though I doubt they will, as somebody who's usually a people pleaser, my very much not people pleasing conversation is about as much as a fair warning as they're going to get before things either get fixed or I quit Monday morning. My previous more or less 'standard' job experience includes farm labor, a company that went bankrupt, and a company that was gutted by private equity. I've never both seen a company be so incompetent and never grown to despise a job like I have before now. The fact they're critical infrastructure is horrifying. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://nate.mecca1.net/posts/2026-08-12_cars3/ A long and rambly complaint posts about the state of vehicles after I thought I'd need to purchase one. Be forwarned, it's my longest post yet (and that's even after breaking it into three different posts). I even broke Grammarly's word limit. #cars #tech #privacy #blog npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Yeah, if you add "??" to the search it goes an AI directly instead if doing a general web search. It's not the most powerful LLM, but I've found it very handy. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate GN Just fed some sloppy cell phone scans of my handwriting into Claude and I'm throughly impressed. I like handwriting things (especially fiction, where I can type faster than my brain can write making for a less enjoyable writing experience). But handwriting adds another step, going from draft > revise > share to draft > transcribe > revise > share. Had some decentish luck with other AIs, but they made enough mistakes that I found it better off manually transcribing than editing a mistake riddled document (mistakes by AI, the mistakes in my writing that the document is riddled with is what the revise process is for). But Claude was immaculate. Only a single mistake, mistaking a "D" for a "P". No other issues, and it even picked up on dashes and struck through content. This'll probably also be confusing for some staunchly anti-AI people lol. In one sense, I'm writing purely human fully analog literature on physical paper (albeit literature of meh quality). Then I might start turning around and giving it to an AI. While I'm there I might as well even have it proofread it with me. I might have just crossed cypherpunk and luddite. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I've personally increasingly utilized (or, in a more negative light, become reliant) on AI for search. For basic stuff I can use Brave (they have their own indexing and a privacy respecting interface) and for more advanced stuff, I might as well ask AI to do the legwork of doing the dozen or so searches and rely on myself for fact checking and interpretation. Especially as Google gets worse. It used to be that I would use Brave for the basics and Google for more advanced searches, but while Brave more or less has remained the same Google seems to have only plunged off a cliff. Google's AI summaries are worse than just about any other AI option (including Brave's), and it's actual search results seem to be Reddit or random junk. I legitimately think Bing might be a contender for the best purely search engine, and Brace close behind with a user focused experience (privacy & no hands on the search engine algorithm scale), which should be a good indication of how far Google's fallen in mind. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate GM Been nearly a month since I had to leave for work before 6, the sun wasn't up yet like it was last time. Definitely slowly making its way towards fall. Does make for a nice ride though, leaving just before the sun comes up and pulling into work during golden hour. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Out of curiosity, what's the interest in buying a Sega Genesis over software or hardware emulators and mini consoles? npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Expectation: Ride a metal beast powered by explosions and the earthly remains of ancient leviathans. I wanted to reference it and saw it was missing, there's an archived version but I don't want to share it if it was intentionally redacted. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Generic non-answer: everything has a risk, so minimizing your attack surface is your best bet. But it's unlikely to be a big risk. It's probably safe, but I'd personally be hesitate of vibe coded software to handle keys directly. Though it's both my job and hobby to be somewhat suspicious about tech. I also just put 100+ miles on a motorcycle today, which is statistically more dangerous than had I put the same on a car. Like anything else slightly risky, if improves your experience I'd say go for it, but if you're on the fence then defaulting to the less risky option is probably the safer bet. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://cdn.hzrd149.com/e51c8232f8748550e095a42dddca9c49fe45f6e8de6f22482f9fc354df503783.jpeg Tell me that doesn't look like a robot bug going 😮 npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I personally don't generally post about crypto, and used to mostly follow people who didn't post about it much. Things can get heated occasionally, but it's usually the Bitcoin stuff I don't have as much of a stake in, so it's pretty easy to get along with people. 3) People seem to share a lot of my interests. The other week @nprofile…4463 and I were chatting in Shavian. I've never met somebody outside of Nostr - on the Internet or IRL - that even knew what it was (an alternative phonetic alphabet). It seems to attract people of similar wavelengths. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate A post export ability might be neat, archiving all your posts locally in rebroadcastable signed json and possibly also as one big html/pdf/text doc. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate A test of #IPFS on #Nostr https://ipfs-test.shakespeare.wtf/nevent1qgsfzzhequxl66lwucls6j42cd2ttkskf44my0yusakd75jvwgzwvmgqyzwwgq9t082lkax5m8v58jgzsv4fvk0pzc2wt4hm7l796qlfl5ufj4m3erm #nevent1q…nqng npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Would this change his mind, or is the ceo of Nostr just going to ban me 😆 https://ipfs-test.shakespeare.wtf/nevent1qgsfzzhequxl66lwucls6j42cd2ttkskf44my0yusakd75jvwgzwvmgqyzwwgq9t082lkax5m8v58jgzsv4fvk0pzc2wt4hm7l796qlfl5ufj4m3erm npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate IPFS test ipfs://bafkreibo6nsbqtzegjptjgqbq3kd4tezjv3w4nmnd6wpm4ort4yownjd3e?filename=meme.jpg npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Makes me curious, I wonder how IPFS would interact with Nostr for larger uploads. I know it's slower than Blossom for things like images in microblogging posts, but for something like a magazine or other large file hosting it might be useful. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate GM Got reimbursed for 1,424 miles from June, and made another vibe slop tool to convert .MD files to DOCX in the browser: https://0n4t3.github.io/MD-to-DOCX/ npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YibAiSQxwA #meme #parody #linux npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Nvm on trying at home, used a different network and it uploaded without issue. Top speed is limited to 19 mph, while a full charge delivers up to 46 miles of range. I wouldn't be surprised if little electric city cars become a lot more popular, but man, I'm not sure what Stellantis is doing there. It's almost exactly double what I paid for my (used) Fiesta, and there's ebikes with 5kw batteries out there. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Not sure of anything quite like feedbro, but depending on what you're looking for, https://readr.nz might work (local in browser RSS reader as a PWA instead of an extension). npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate 🇺🇸 Happy tell the British to bugger off day. I've only played it for a bit, but it's definitely got me hooked. It's a game built on Skyrim, but it's ot exactly a mod, it's a completely seperate game built on the engine. It's free if you already own a later version of Skyrim, and if you don't I picked up the special edition for cheap on the Steam summer sale. It's definitely a slower feeling game. It's a but harder (enjoyable, but difficult, given I'm a rather bad gamer) with a lot more resource management and slower, more calculating gameplay. Definitely scratching an itch that I haven't seen much in many games. Worth a try if you like the elder scrolls games, or if you want to like them but are slightly offput by the newer games' focus on hand holding and cinimatics as opposed to gameplay itself. #gaming #enderal npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://nate.mecca1.net/posts/2026-07-02_cars-2-two-wheelers/ Another long car related tangent post, this on on two wheeled vehicles (motorcycles, ebikes, & mopeds). #blog #blogster #motorcycle #ebike npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate My go to: #nevent1q…55c2 npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate My grandparents had a water bed when I was growing up. I've mostly just been using the trackpad on my laptop; mice take up space which is annoying in my car, and nearly impossible when I'm taking my motorcycle and can only carry a days worth of stuff in in a tiny airbag backpack. But $80 for a mouse is a bit steep of a price. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Also, I'd wonder if NIP-99 (marketplaces) might be a good fit too. Even after an hour plus commute by motercycle through some somewhat heavy rain my shirt and pants were still completely dry. Even had I taken my car, they'd have been fairly wet from a walk from my car across a parking lot, so I'd say that was a pretty great success. My boots on the other hand, despite being 'water proof' are very much not. They 'may' have been when I bought them, but they had ~1500 miles on them before I tested their waterproff capabilities, and they're definitly not now. And of course, silly me, I didn't think to avoid wearing cotton socks. Even AFTER last night's commute showed me they weren't water proof. So my feet are a bit cold and wet despite being here at work for 3.5 hours already. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Good luck npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Do tire balancing beads actually work? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T47s4L1Wje4 npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Engine appears to be fine luckily #nevent1q…qa2m npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate It appears the coolant in my car decided to be a silly goose, and thought it'd cool the engine better if it was inside the engine instead if the radiator.
