Even after an hour plus commute by motercycle through some somewhat heavy rain my shirt and pants were still completely dry. Even had I taken my car, they'd have been fairly wet from a walk from my car across a parking lot, so I'd say that was a pretty great success. My boots on the other hand, despite being 'water proof' are very much not. They 'may' have been when I bought them, but they had ~1500 miles on them before I tested their waterproff capabilities, and they're definitly not now. And of course, silly me, I didn't think to avoid wearing cotton socks. Even AFTER last night's commute showed me they weren't water proof. So my feet are a bit cold and wet despite being here at work for 3.5 hours already. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Good luck npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Engine appears to be fine luckily #nevent1q…qa2m npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate It appears the coolant in my car decided to be a silly goose, and thought it'd cool the engine better if it was inside the engine instead if the radiator. Lol, just got brand new tires that might be used for a total of 0.5 commutes depending how the engine is looking once somebody who knows what they're doing can look at it. Today has been a bit of an adventure. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate If animals weren't meant to be eaten then why are they made of food? npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Ironically Cuomo went through basically the same arc before her. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I'm familiar with it, but maybe it's not to common outside of people who design images/UIs/etc? npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate http://cdn.hzrd149.com/11437134b9fc229bd3770003941ffe5a62d957757a76097a11e09758fccff289.jpeg Bought a little portable tire inflator last fall, I've gotten quite a bit of use out of it (unfortunately). npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Welp, there's some snow outside this morning. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://soeren.one/2026/ama_cereal_soup/ npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate It's easier to escape Earth's gravitation pull than it is to escape #Microslop #nevent1q…9ac8 npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I wanted to try out NIP-B0 (public bookmarks/link aggregation), and since it looks like most clients are works in progress, I wound up vibing a fork of MKpinja. https://vibemarks.shakespeare.wtf/ https://github.com/0n4t3/bookmark-nostr/ It's not exactly a premium client, you're probably better off using using a different bookmarking client once some better clients finish supporting the NIP. But if anyone wanted to give it a try it's there in the meantime. Honestly, the setup was really easy. Hadn't used Shakespeare before, I plugged in a free OpenRouter model and it went pretty seamlessly. Total cost for a custom client with a feature combo I was looking for (and couldn't find elsewhere) was $0 to build and deploy. #nostr #vibecoding #NIP-B0 npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Oops, I think I accidentally auto filled the wrong link. If not, why? npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Well looks like Debian might have cooked my tablet. Upgraded from Bookworm to Trixie (yes, I know I'm late to the party on that) and something just broke itself. And, instead of going to bed early like I should be (my alarm is going off at 4:45 AM) I'm seeing if I can get it working. Well, I guess if nothing else I had a good run. I think this is the first time a Debian installation imploded post installation for a reason that was not (at least probably not?) my fault. #Debian #linux npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://bookstr.xyz/ might be what you're looking for. And I think ditto.pub is also implementing some of the same features npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Out of curiosity, what's an behind the decision to use Wikipedia and Archive.org instead of being able to comment on any URL? npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Private social media - Facebook style posts for semi private communication with friends (lol I know "Facebook" and "Private" in the same sentence is a bit of an oxymoron lol). npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I *think* (assuming courts don't strike the laws down, which I hope they do) the laws mostly focus on companies. If Zapstore and GrapheneOS are outside jurisdictions that require it, and somebody in a restricted jurisdiction get their hands on it one way or another, nobody's going to jail. Which is good, since I'm in NY and there's an even more restrictive bill than California already in the works. Props to people who'd flaunt the laws, but I'm not going to jail or getting saddled with more debt in fines than I'll make in my life for software. But again, fingers crossed they're struck down in the US. If a lower court already struck down a much less restrictive Texas law, maybe there's some hope for that at least. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Well, I might have just had a 'productive' all night gaming session followed by sleeping into 4PM. Got called to do a set of 9PM-9AM shifts, because of some rather high winds, at the local power company I recently started working at. Wish me luck. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Definitely something I'd consider (joining at least, hosting services without verifing users in my home state of NY is likely going to come with a 10k per user fine in a bit) npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Scratch that on sharing it in NIP-23 form. Habla won't accept a post over 65,000 bytes, I can't seem to log into Yakihonne via Amber, and clicking publish on Primal does nothing. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Made a revised version of my older social media protocol comparison post https://nate.mecca1.net/posts/2026-03-08_microblogging-protocols-v3/ And a meme to go along with it: https://nate.mecca1.net/img/protocol-meme-4.mp4 I'll also share as a NIP-23 Nostr post in a few moments. #blog #blogstr #nostr #activitypub #bluesky #meme npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate In my experience as a non-engineer with very mild development experience, when I toy with AI it has the feeling of a skill multiplier. With a skill of 0.1 I can give it instructions (eg comply with these NIPs, keep it all local within the browser using web storage, etc) doing way more than I could have on my own. Multiplying a skill of zero, though ("dear AI: build this thing on your own without oversight") makes for a broken mess of incompatibility and unnecessary (and probably insecure) back-ends. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://blog.system76.com/post/system76-on-age-verification #Linux #ageverification npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I seem to have run into an issue where the color picker on themes pops up behind the theme editor, is anyone seeing that? Seems to do that on all my browsers (Brave/Librewolf & Desktop/Mobile), but can't rule out jank on my own setup. https://blossom.ditto.pub/7351a90d30a7ac4f1de546eb8383caaa907cfdd3db502f1ae4d87f06f88de72e.jpeg npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Neat, got that myspace customize your own page vibe. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I use ncmpcpp for music in Termux. Taken through a family member's telescope, but used digital zoom on the pixel. #photography #eclipse npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I used Librewolf for a while until the memory leaks got to me, now I mostly use Brave. Not sure if MAC would have the same Gecko issues though, Firefox/Librewolf might be worth a shot. Vivaldi is also cool, it's a bit more suite-like than my liking, but it's more of a preference thing than a knock against the browser. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate 🚀 #nevent1q…wxlv #nevent1q…4c3e #GrapheneOS npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I've toyed around with setting up a relay, although haven't actually setup a public one before. The Python one by DCS is exceptionally easy to setup. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I haven't seen much spam honestly. I keep hearing people talk about it, and assume I don't have the reach worth the attention of spammers, but I don't see any in the replies here either. Unless maybe it's just Amythest cleaning things up or something. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I think the Voyage client handles data well, not loading things like images/videos by default. Tried it in the past, a tad bit too minimalist for my taste (and I never browse on cellular), but has a nice charm to it. For ram/cpu, I don't think things are all that crazy intense, unless the client is unoptimized. My Chromebook running Debian (dual core cpu that's very out of date, 1.88 gb usable RAM) runs Nostrudel. The page freezes or runs slow occasionally, but fairly rarely and usually only when loading my feed after opening the page. And that's with all the works (outbox model, nsec bunker, relay authentication, and following 100+ accounts - albeit some being inactive). At least my observations anyway. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate @nprofile…z2n3 @nprofile…lf00 @nprofile…55kn @nprofile…2szn Hey, random thought, if it was a useful idea figured you all would be the people to make use of it. Has there been any consideration of using Nostr for age verification? A user verifies their age in a semi private way (say, a small credit card transaction) -> provider creates an event or badge of some kind and applies it to their profile -> the user of the profile can be assumed to be of age without needing to provide proof to relays or other services. It wouldn't exactly be anonymous, but it'd probably be about as pseudonymous as you could get for an age verification (the npub with an age attested isn't publicly tied to any details that were used to verify it). I know age verification isn't really in line with cypherpunk ideals, but a lot of jurisdictions are moving to require it. At some point soon everything from a Nostr relay to a GitLab server could require age verification, and as much as ignoring it now might an option, it might be good to get ahead of things and get the infrastructure for that sort of stuff in place. A verified npub or gpg key might be the least evil of all the options, and could probably be useful to verify an account for just about any small project or service (Nostr & beyond) without requiring the people verifying to pay for some external age verification service, and without requiring the people being verified to hand over their personal details to ever service. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Saw someone driving on lake Erie today. The lake still might be frozen, but with the warm spell we had the grass on the shore is partially visible. It certainly takes bravery that I don't be have to be zipping around the lake on a snowmobile in this weather. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate New post on my 'mini blog', about toying around with a phone dock (actually, what I'm typing this post on rn). https://1nate.leaflet.pub/3mfp35jgopc26 Giving leaflet (built on AT proto a try) this go 'round on my miniblog experimentation. #blog #blogstr npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate IMO, I feel like Nostr and Bluesky are struggling for two different reasons - Nostr with minimal exposure and a high barrier to entry, and Bluesky because it got very heavily political captured. I'd bet there'd be a lot to learn on the Nostr side about Bluesky's easyness to join and abstraction of keys (or forgoing them for domain based accounts in some cases). npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Looks like a new bridge is being developed, supporting newsreader groups and Lemmy (plus presumably any Activity Pub Groups supported software): https://github.com/rjolina/leNNyTP #activitypub #lemmy #bridging npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate !!! I have no idea what I'm talking about, so take it with a grain of salt. !!! I think publishing to Kindle Unlimited might have its benefits - readers get it for free, but you get a portion of their subscription revenue. It requires it to be exclusive to Amazon for the duration, but might be a way of bootstrapping an audience. If you weren't planning to do Kindle Unlimited, then I'd say go wide. Amazon is a pain when it comes to reading books. No DRM free content (generally, though they may have changed slightly very recently), and good luck reading it the way you want (e.g. reading offline on Linux is impossible without running a Windows VM). It's also got a lot of people publishing on it - something like Smashwords might have less users, but it's also probably got a lot less competition. Good luck! npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Trusting Trust in the Fediverse https://evilmaid.net/blog/trusting-trust-fediverse/index.html (Archive link since it seems to be down) https://web.archive.org/web/20260213152823/https://evilmaid.net/blog/trusting-trust-fediverse/index.html A cool #blog post I came across discussing some ActivityPub issues & solutions. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Why is it the companies with the problems are the ones without bug bounties? Danna. It's been on my (metaphorical) shelf for a while, I think I found it a few years ago Dollar Tree. Started reading it during a power outage the other day, and got hooked pretty fast. A lot of books are a bit bulkier, scifi/fantasy books that have a lot of world building and really detailed plotlines. Exit Strategy has a lot "smaller" of a story for a lack of a better term (smaller stakes, humanity isn't at stake or anything, + a smaller cast of characters), and it takes probably a dozen or so pages to introduce the setting and then gets right into the main plot. It moves quickly, in the ~300 or so pages it has a self contained story that's moves rapidly. There's not a lot of subplots and it doesn't meander too much, so it's a fairly linear story throughout the entire book that doesn't get boring. Characters seem human, not just cardboard cutouts or with crazy inhuman smarts/skills/etc. Definitely worth a read. #bookstr npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Of course, all the voices in my head wouldn't have it any other way. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Happy new year npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://text.tchncs.de/1nate/holos-is-adding-custom-domain-support Mini #blog post about #Holos (a relay style activity pub server) npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate I had a Nokia phone before, they've got a decent camera and are often absurdly cheap if you get one locked to your carrier. Most people here are probably technical enough to do something like that, and running it on an old laptop or Raspberry Pi might be something interesting to a lot of people if it was pretty much plug and play without need of a static IP or open port. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Just logged into Primal, I'm seeing all your posts. Before, when they were like that, you could effectively build out your own platform using Bluesky's infrastructure for hosting, kinda bootstrapping the protocol and letting anyone build a platform with the rules of their choosing. Now that Bluesky moderates at the PDS layer AND the relay layer, and since they host the vast majority of AT Proto infrastructure, they've more or less locked the entirety of AT into Bluesky's community guidelines. (Who'd want to build a platform on AT with different guidelines, if no user of Bluesky - which is practically the entire network - could partake in said alternative AT platform?) As far as other platforms though, I'm more agnostic on neutral PDSs - if I understand the issue with that controversy it was with Blacksy. If an alternative platform moderates at the PDS layer that's not going to effectively apply the rules to all of AT like Bluesky can. Once a protocol is more widespread individual instances of it can have a diverse set of rules, but if one instance (e.g. Bluesky Corporate) can apply it's rules to the entire network before it expands, then the protocol could be captured and prevented from expanding beyond that initial niche base that captured it. My 2c anyway. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate My reading kinda ebbs and flows, but I've been reading a fair but lately. Over the last month or so I've read two books in their entirety, read parts of another one or two, and re-listened to a 6 book audiobook series. A lot of times I use audiobooks and ebooks via TTS as background audio when working/gaming/driving etc. Overall, if audiobooks count, maybe 30-50. If audiobooks (and using TTS to read some or all of an ebook) don't count then maybe 2-10 depending on the year. But just a rough guess. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate DiVine, a Vine style shortform video app using Nostr, is in the process of being launched. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate Read and reed ryme with lead, read and red ryme with lead. npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate RIP react devs npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://i.pinimg.com/736x/78/e3/6c/78e36c8c096aeb13b46a3b41cd934c9f.jpg npub1jy90jpcdl447ae3lp4924s65khdpvnttkg7fepmvmafycusyueksrvllx9 Nate https://nate.mecca1.net/img/protocol-meme-3.mp4 https://nate.mecca1.net/posts/2025-12-07_microblog-protocols-update/ New #blog post, plus a #meme that goes over some updates in the decentralized social media space (#activitypub #nostr and #at / #bluesky ).
