The lady who runs the business told me 1. she needed to sign up for #bitcoin payments with Square first, and then 2. select "other payment types" before turn the screen around to show me the QR code.
Hopefully as Square becomes more comfortable with this new feature they can make it more of a default option like Speed Pay does for Steak n' Shake.

Same happening to me. Looks like spam repos created to tag you on spam issues. When reported girhub removes or hides the repo and notifications but leaves the notification counter numbers and no way to clear /remove them. Very annoying.

The internet definitely killed BITNET relay, but the concepts it pioneered live on in IRC. AFAIK UUNET news and readers still exist but are not installed by default on any modern systems.
It's cool and interesting to see new tools like #bitchat incorporate concepts from both. BITNET relay used /<command> syntax and UUNET was a decentralized store and forward, P2P relay based system.

While a student in the late 90s I worked the weekend graveyard shift as a datacenter "operator". My primary duties were change the 1/2 inch backup tapes and racking them with their corresponding green bar printout logs. I also cleaned the backup drive heads with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and made sure all the nightly batch jobs finished.
I also read Usenet news, chatted with strangers on Bitnet Relay and played a lot of NetHack. Good times.

Re 8: how will the socialist/communist/authoritarian govs pay the enforcers of their policies if over half of capital/wealth is difficult or impossible to confiscate? If it's the rich elites footing the bill will they really be able to sustain their position in a new hard money (bitcoin) world?
My understanding of the most recent hard money era is it tended to empower the productive but also improve the standard of living and thus autonomy of even the relatively unproductive due to monetary deflation, improved capital allocation and tech innovation.

1. Is there any proposed legislation in the US to remove the penalty for insurers to use #bitcoin as backing for BTC denominated policies?
2. If an insurer was able to use and custody BTC to back a policy who would/could insure that custody? In wouldn't make sense to take a BTC denominated insurance policy from an insurer who holds their BTC with some shit place like coinbase.

Whenever I read about this bill I think "Faustian bargain". The stable coin folks get full access to the US market and all the money and power that comes with, but lose any pretense of privacy or censorship resistance. They think they can somehow cheat the Devil, but he always gets his due (in this case complete government/bank industry capture).

Easier said than done. Most people don't know anything about bitcoin, money, technology, or anything else they'd need to self custody without the help of a 3rd party. I'd much rather recommend paid services that help people use self-custody than leave them to figure it out on their own.
But by all means if you want to train your friends and family and co-workers how to use the available free options please do. We need more people doing that too, but it's a big responsibility.

You're right, digging in a bit most of these "every day" millionaire likely have it all in illiquid assets, mainly their houses. But these people do have the option to downsize a little and not use their primary residences as their only long term savings accounts.
A related article from last year says there are around 5.5M people in the US with more than $1M in liquid, readily investable assets. I doubt many of them own, let alone self custody any bitcoin.
