The room was packed. Everyone was there for the Nostr talk, to hear from people who truly know what they're talking about: @nprofile…qhqe, @nprofile…8f86, and many others.
But I was up first. The schedule was already running late.
So I walked onto the stage in the biggest Bitcoin conference in the world and did something nobody else had dared to do yet: I asked everyone to use Nostr. Live.
"Zap me," I said. "Your zap, your Nostr profile, and your message will appear live on the screen next to me."
Nostr can be a little shaky. This demo had every chance to fail.
And the best part?
It did.
My @nprofile…phgj wallet never received the payments. No zap came through. There I was, on stage, in front of a packed room at the biggest conference in the world, telling people to use Nostr... and it didn't work.
Honestly, it couldn't have been a better demonstration of how much work we still have to do.
Luckily, the room was full of Nostr believers. They didn't laugh at the failure. They understood exactly why it mattered.

In a perfect world, open source software distribution would already be solved, and people could dedicate their time to explore ideas and create without the weight of having to support themselves and their loved ones.
The world is not perfect. People struggle, most have their own interests in mind and there is competition.
I never got a grant myself, but I know many people that got grants and it helped them immensely.
People at OpenSats and other foundations are just humans and certainly have their faults but so many projects were supported, so many people were helped, that is unfair to just criticize.
And just like Foundations need to raise the bar, aim higher and do better, so do developers and builders.
We all do.

I like pubky tech, it was cool to learn about it more deeply. My work at pubky was precisely developing a dashboard for their homeserver. For people coming from nostr, it's probably one of the strangest concepts in pubky, not having to sign and trusting that a homeserver doesn't adulterate your data. But each user advertising which homeserver keeps his data also has obvious advantages over nostr, perhaps with some loss on decentralization, but makes it easier in some regards.

I know how i was treated by the people of your team i interacted with, and I think you don't know the full story. my personality has nothing to do with this, the communication was not extensive enough for this. I feel it's actually normal that some people gate keep the money they get, they don't want to make it obvious that someone else could do your job better than them.

I am one of the few people in the world that built both for Nostr and Pubky. Disclaimer: I was paid to build in Pubky but always worked in Nostr for free.
I think Nostr is cool but it attracted a lot of builders mostly because they felt it was easy to get grants for half baked software. Still, the reality is that are a lot of people excited about building on Nostr, and there are some cool applications to the protocol already.
I think John is a great guy, and very smart. In my personal experience, Synonym's main problem is that John is not good at choosing which people to hire, my interactions made me think most seem more interested in rent seeking and gate keeping that actually building the future.
I don't know what will happen, but probably things will get better for all when price action starts being more positive.
Keep building, keep having fun... And if you find yourself in a position where FOSS doesn't pay the bills... welcome to the club 😘

Like many people around Nostr, I first came across FIPS and felt that strange mix of curiosity and confusion. It sounded aligned with the values many of us care about, but it also came wrapped in a wall of technical language: mesh networking, NAT traversal, Noise encryption, IPv6 adapters, bloom filters, spanning trees.
So I tried to step back and ask a simpler question: what is FIPS actually trying to do, and why should someone on Nostr care?
The short answer is that FIPS is trying to build a permissionless, encrypted, peer-to-peer networking layer. That sounds abstract, but the basic idea is simple: today, most of our digital lives still depend on centralized infrastructure. Even when we use Bitcoin or Nostr, we usually reach them through internet service providers, routers, DNS systems, cloud services, app stores, hosting companies, and other intermediaries.
The normal internet does not work like “my computer talks directly to your computer.” In practice, your device connects to your router, your router connects to your ISP, your ISP connects to other networks, and eventually your traffic reaches some server somewhere. On top of that, many devices are hidden behind home routers and firewalls, which makes direct peer-to-peer communication surprisingly difficult.
This is one of the problems FIPS is interested in. It asks whether networking itself can become more peer-to-peer, more resilient, and less dependent on central coordination. Instead of relying on a single VPN server, cloud provider, or fixed route, FIPS imagines devices forming an encrypted mesh. In that mesh, nodes can discover each other, connect through different transports, and help forward traffic across the network.
Physical infrastructure still matters. For long-distance communication, we still mostly depend on ISPs, submarine cables, datacenters, and telecom networks. What it tries to decentralize is the coordination layer: how nodes find each other, how routes are formed, and how trust is handled.
This is where Nostr becomes relevant. FIPS uses Nostr-style cryptographic identities, meaning a node can be identified by a public key rather than by a traditional account or centrally assigned name. Nostr can also help with discovery: not carrying the traffic itself, but helping nodes announce that they exist and share information about how they might be reached. For people already familiar with npubs and private keys, this part should feel philosophically familiar.
The exciting part is that FIPS is not limited to the normal internet. It is designed to work across different transports: UDP, TCP, Ethernet, Tor, Bluetooth, and potentially other mediums. That opens the door to interesting scenarios: local community networks, temporary networks at events, disaster recovery setups, censorship-resistant communication paths, or places where normal infrastructure is weak or unreliable.
There are performance and reliability tradeoffs. Centralized systems are often popular because they are efficient, easy to debug, and simple for users. Decentralized systems often gain resilience and sovereignty at the cost of complexity. That does not make them bad. It just means we should not pretend there is no cost.
FIPS is an alternative networking layer: something that can run on top of existing infrastructure, but can also take advantage of local or non-traditional connections when available. It is not a magic escape hatch from ISPs, but it may reduce how much power any single intermediary has over connectivity.
FIPS is exploring a problem that deserves attention. If we care about sovereignty, censorship resistance, and resilient communication, then we cannot only think about apps. Eventually, we have to think about the network itself.
And that is why FIPS is worth understanding. Not because it solves everything today, but because it forces us to look at a part of the stack we usually ignore.
