I've got the bare bones of a story in my head. Unsure about the setting though. It might be fantasy, but I want it to be different from my usual spiel. Something new.
So, I'm delving into myths and folklore from non-European, non-Christian/Greek/Roman/Nordic settings. Food for thought.
It might come to nothing, but at least it's there.

Every free thought is about the story. Fingers aren't fast enough. Back pain will be ignored as long as possible. Eating and drinking becomes secondary. Every day free for writing is a gift.
Love it when that happens.

To be honest - the last thing I read that motivated me to write was a piece of fanfiction I wrote earlier this year. Reading it yesterday motivated me to finish the piece.
Not sure this counts, but it is what happened.

A granny tells her smallest grandchildren stories of the Sisters to distract them from the attack on their farm. Enter her 13yr old grandson to get them out; the house is on fire. Chaos, smoke, a falling beam - they barely make it into a chamber, the boy tries to open the windows. Small kids are dead and Granny's body gives out just as a hand reaches in and pulls boy out.

Update: Today, I went to the last bookstore and that one was even better. Had a long talk with the owner about books. I wants to read #FridaVonHameln in his vacation the week after next and told, if the conditions are met, he'd order a whole bunch and put them out on the table for local history! He said there's a niche at the moment! I cannot tell you how proud and happy I am today. It's almost scary!

I did something today that was way out of my comfort zone: I went into the four local bookstores and told them about #FridaVonHameln. My heart was going a mile a minute and it was so hard not to turn around and run.
But it was worth it: Although the chains told me no right away, one of the others took a copy and promised to take a look.
I totally forgot to tell them that I got an English translation as well but - I did it!

I embrace them as long as they fit. I do avoid certain expressions in historical or epic fantasy settings, though.

I was at a concert of Roxette, some years ago. The lead singer, Marie, had a brain tumor (had undergone surgery and was in remission at the time). In the middle of a beloved oldie of the group, her voice gave out.
The entire concert hall (some 15.000 people) stepped in and sang for her. I had tears in my eyes.
RIP, Marie.

Good morning to you too (well, it's lunch time here)!
First, I look at the story - is it something I'm comfortable with, that I would like to publish? Can I do it justice?
Second, I am very upfront with my authors about what I can and can't deliver. I don't buy stories but work on a shared royalties program. I take care of getting the story edited and out via the agreed channels. But my marketing budget is very small.
Not everyone agrees to that.

Excellent question! Research is very important for me. I do the bulk for historical fiction while I still bounce ideas around in my head - location, time, events or people I can include. While I write, I still have to look up certain things, but the bulk is done.
And yes, I prefer to have seen the places - although that is always time relative, of course. For this one, Hameln hasn't changed that much, but e.g. Berlin, for the last one, changed a lot.

Was hat dich dazu gebracht, dieses Projekt jetzt in Angriff zu nehmen?
Ich war mit meinem anderen WIP nicht zufrieden und wusste aber auch nicht genau, woran es lag. Dieses fühlt sich besser an.
Und außerdem: Wenn da so etwas in meinem Kopf aufpoppt, muss es umgesetzt werden. Die Recherche hat mich fasziniert. Ich weiß immer noch nicht, was wirklich hinter dem Rattenfänger steckt und höchstwahrscheinlich kriege ich es nie raus 😂

Sure, I very much enjoyed the time when a book of mine was ranked Number 1 at Amazon (even though it was in free downloads), but EVERY reader counts.

Years ago, I went with a friend to a performance of the Life Ballet and saw a young dancer dance his own death. That was so intense, it sparked the birth of a character in my brain - Flo of #TheChildrenOfAngels
I even made him look like that performer, down to the very clothes.
Will never forget.

Ich habe keinen Verkaufszwang.
Allerdings merke ich durchaus einen Unterschied zu früher, als ich nur für mich schrieb. Da war ich wilder, unlogischer, kitschiger, freier. Jetzt kriechen immer potentielle Lesende durch meinen Hinterkopf.
Und manchmal blockieren sie mich.
Würde ich ohne das schreiben, wäre ich vermutlich freier, aber meine Geschichten auch... anders.

I was first published by an indie publisher. When things went sideways with the owner (the CEO was wonderful, the owner less so), I pulled my books and decided to create my own tiny company, which is mostly a one person show. Said sweet CEO helped me a lot.
Basically, I'm a self-publisher who helps some others, less technically inclined authors, too.
And here I am.

I feel I need to clarify my take on likes & reposts - I DO know that mastodon works differently & there is no algorithm.
I hardly read the general feed but go by hashtags. That keeps me sane in this insane world. I also repost sparingly for reasons too long for this toot.
So, if you get a ⭐️ from me, that means I hear you, I like, you're not screaming into the void.
And if the toot impresses me much for whatever reason, I repost.

#WritersCoffeeClub Dec 31. What were the big writing moments for you in 2024?
My participation in #WritingMonth for the very first time. It was an insane ride which lasted six weeks and at the end stood a novel of 130k.
Granted, it was exhausting at times and wouldn't have been feasible with my former full-time job. It was also the first time I tracked my progress that way (not sure if I'll ever do that again).
But I'm ending the year with #GabrielZurmuehlen.

it used to be good. But years of neglect have taken its toll. I already not the my train is not my train and that it will be late, and I haven't even left the house yet.
I really wish they'd fix this. Train travel can be super fun and relaxing

Yes, most definitely. But I will also enjoy a slower pace in December. I know the stress was self-made - no one forced me to write like a maniac.
The important thing is that I started writing a historical novel at all, after procrastinating for ages.
