IFTAS is an independant organization that tries to help saftey matters on Open Social platforms. They track spam and malicious activity. And provide legal resources for social media issues.
Small instances dont have legal teams. And someone keeping tabs on bad actors on the fedi helps mods keep them at bay.
If you feel lke you can support saftey on the Open Social, they are not asking for much.

The Fediverse relies on users' donation, rather than corporate money. That is freeing in alot of ways. But it isnt free. Someone has to pay for development, hosting, time. For that, servers rely on donations.
It isnt required by -every- user. But again, ~someone~ has to pay. If you can, help your server by donating to the instance's crowd fund.
Socelites, if you can, it would help. And be appreciated.

I'll do what I can.
First, I would not only look at the IFTAS site. I would also follow @npub1y2r…kvzk once you have the instance started. I recommend using the notification bell. Dig around at first, but it has all sorts of resources to help in running a server. And a great place to revisit when you have a question.

One person mod team here. And dont get much reports or spam activity. But that makes your work all the more important.
I have IFTAS on the notification bell to make sure I see them all. And Limit/Suspend 90% of the time. (I do what I can, but again, one person.)
I am always greatful for your alerts. And guides.
Tho, I see IFTAS as a resource like Wikipedia. So sarcasm in it feels.. off.

This is a day that artists will post art to show what they have to see. With the hashtag #PortfolioDay.
As an artist, this is great to show off your work. For a viewer, this is a great way to find a new fav artist to follow, or even commission.

I think what I would like the most is both the projected benifits AND problems of allowlisting. Then to compare them to the cost-benifit we have in denylisting.
Then, look at which problems we can best address.

I cant deny that allowlisting would, or could, solve many problems. But I dont want to go without questioning what problems come with allowlisting. On small and large scale.
I'm not a software engineer, so I dont want to pie in the sky to a pipe dream here. But I would wonder what all those tools you mention would look like in combination, if possible. But, of course, it depends how those tools are defined going into hypothetical development.

Thank you for this report. It will help in seeing the wider picture of the Fedi and oprn social web.
I still remain resistant to allow-list based federation. I worry that doesnt reduce the work load. And makes the open web less open. If open at all, truely.
But, reading this, i do recognize there is a problem that deny-list is poor at solving.
If there is a answer that is degrees before allowlist only, I could be open to it.

FireFox has a feature where you can change the icon for it to a few selections. To where a different one appears on your desktop, or app list. One of those selections is made by @npub1uxq…5dcj, a fellow Socelite and Fedizen.

Mastodon tip:
Boosting became a little complicated when quote posts came in. Now when you click :boost:, you have to click between regular boosting, and quote-posting.
Want to make regular boosting simpler? Try this. If you hold down a Shift key while clicking :boost:, it will regular boost. No need to select between the two options.

Hi all. Introducing a pilot project for Socel. I call it Socel Image. Every so often, for fun, I'll commission a Socelite or Fedi artist to make a temp avatar for this account. Something based on recent or timeless anim works.
This pilot image is by @npub1ayj…l33x. And they dont miss. Real princess grade work. Do you think it pops? What are the hard facts about what it is based on?
Still figuring out how this will work. But am very open to feedback. How would you like future images decided?

Socel is now on Masto v 4.5. The biggest thing is quote toots are now an option. And you have alot of options around that.
Like any tool, be responsible with it. But explore it. Customize your options. And figure out how you want it to work.

:blobcheer: It's portfolio day! Show off the best of your artwork, and add the #PortfolioDay hashtag to it. Add tags with the type of art for good measure.
Also, look around the hashtag too, throughout the day. And boost liberally. Especially if you find work you think should be shared.
You are not required to. But do know alot of ppl on the Fedi may not boost if there is no alt text in a pic.

I loved the idea of social media that is smaller scale in some ways. But is larger-scale as a community. I want to thank Charles for making this community. And taking care of it all these years. Hi All,
Some not-so-great news.
Our database continues to grow and we are being bumped to the next hosting tier. This will put our monthly hosting cost at around US$240, an increase of US$50.
Right now we have just US$35 in recurring contributions which leaves US$205 to be raised each and every month moving forward.
