There is a village of 140 people in Switzerland where voluntary governance is not a thought experiment. It is a plan with land, prices, and a deadline.
Soubey sits in Jura, the youngest canton in Switzerland and the one with the most rebellious streak. A reopened hotel. A local shop. A church. Farmers. A school. Vacation homes. And 1.5 acres of building land at 50 Swiss francs per square metre. Affordable by Swiss standards.
Soubey is dying out. Dr. Marc-Felix Otto and the Free Cities Foundation want to save it. I was a proud Canadian. I believed in Canada the way most people believe in the country they were born into: without question.
Then one winter, we left. A break. Somewhere warm. And standing in the sun while winter waited for us back home, something shifted. I thought: why have I accepted this? Why did I think half a year of cold and dark was the price of being Canadian?
That question led to more trips. Then a three-month road trip through Europe. And somewhere in the middle of it, my husband and I looked at each other and said what we'd both been thinking: we don't want to go back.
Then COVID happened.
Mandates. Restrictions. Neighbours reporting neighbours. A prime minister asking how Canadians could tolerate people like me. The country I had defended showed me exactly who it was.
We started with a housesit in Texas. No restrictions. People living their lives. I stood in a grocery store without a mask and felt the shock of remembering what normal felt like. God bless Texas.
That became more travel. More travel became a pattern. And that pattern brought us to Mexico, where we are building the life we want.
I'm not telling you to do what we did. I'm telling you I was exactly where you might be right now. Proud of a country that was becoming unrecognizable. Grieving something I couldn't name. Wondering if leaving meant giving up or waking up.
I found my answer.

Five years ago today my husband and I left Canada and flew to Texas.

That’s not a dip. That’s a direction.

I spent three weeks in Bar, Montenegro this past November and December.
Here's what I didn't expect to find: a community of people who came here on purpose. Not fleeing, exactly. Choosing. Americans, Australians, Brits, Mexicans—gathering every other Friday morning for coffee. Not surface-level expat chatter. Real conversations. Shared awareness of what's happening in the world. People building something different.
There's also the Montenegro Tower. A renovation project in nearby Dobra Voda run by Chris, a German expat. Game nights. Jam sessions. A meeting point for people who relocated because the place they came from stopped making sense. It stole my heart.
