Getting a sample and taking it apart is probably better, but in either case - even when you know what you want to do, you still need to build machines that will do it reliably to a tight enough tolerance.
This was the same problem they faced when they wanted to re-construct the RocketDyne F-1 engine (which was used on the Saturn 5 rocket)

There's a positive element to this: It allows us to build parallel invite-only economies, because people will actually want to be part of them because the Mainstream Economy has increasingly the vibes of a public school cafeteria. Building invite-only underground economies is great because as they become more relevant, the mainstream economy loses valuable customers and has to close down, leaving a desert for those who are not welcome.

Why ASML won:
They went against standard philosophy -> Standard philosophy is you always have multiple vendors.
ASML went entirely against this, instead they found the best supplier in the world for each one of their critical components, and they signed an exclusivity deal with each one.
So ASML couldn't buy from anyone else, and the company couldn't sell to anyone else.
So China is still trying to catch up, because they are not able to buy ANY of the parts of the stepper.

Probably doesn't matter much.
Can Europe become productive again? Sure, they've done it thousands of times.
Can they build a navy? Probably, but should they? Unclear. It's looking like big ships are big sitting ducks.
American protection was a double-edged sword, Europeans had to entertain American ideas of morality -> e.g. importing migrants against their best interests.
Lose NATO, lose the USD system, people who work and produce things will probably benefit no matter where they live. Big losers will be people who produce nothing and live by their political opinions.

The logic around this gets super weird, which makes the wisest thing be to only conscript men who are already "willing to go" (you know what I mean)...
The problem is that going to Iran is a guaranteed death sentence, and most people more-or-less know that.
So, say you start firing people from their jobs, well, what if Iran wants to play hard ball and start giving cash (Monero) bounties for dead IRS agents? You're out of your job, you can go die, commit suicide, become homeless, or kill some Shaniqua. You probably won't get caught because there are thousands of other people like you thinking the same thing. That's definitely a working model. But those batteries are single-use. You buy them, they run your house, and that's it.
If you have a 16kwh or 32kwh small(ish) battery at your house but you also tap into your vehicle batteries, those ones are doing dual role.
What does NOT work is "V2G", the whole design is fucked and everything about it is $$$$$$

Subsidies are already more-or-less gone. Batteries are getting cheaper because of economies of scale... China is Chinaing...
China still makes it way harder to register a gasoline car (you have to win a license plate lottery), so that's kind of a subsidy.
What's actually becoming dirt cheap is motors, because EVs get retired same as gasoline cars, but unlike a gas engine that's clapped out after 200k miles, a motor lasts ~forever. So it's kind of a golden age for classic conversions...

Yes, 50kw 3 phase AC charging means it can run a genset in the truck bed very easily.
However, large battery has a secondary use case as well: I might look at installing solar at my house with a small(ish) stationary battery.
* When my home battery is >90% and sun is generating, I can charge the truck toward 90%
* When my home battery is <10% I can discharge the truck toward my home inverter until it's at 30%
Picrel is a simulation of what a 22kw solar array would have made at my house last year (using real solar irradiation data), red is 20kwh/day projected consumption. Adding more battery capacity would clearly smooth over October, November, January and February and eliminate any grid buy-in during those months.
Another consideration is that even DC fast charging is like 30 cents / kwh, diesel is 2.30/liter (right now), 1 liter = 10kwh, diesel engine is 40% efficient, so diesel generating costs about 60 cents. Math maybe different if your diesel cost is less insane...

You can imagine reasons why it might actually be correct, but when you're looking at someone's statistics work, and you see something that looks like a mistake - you should assume it's a mistake - because making mistakes is EASY.
Because this is the default assumption, serious researchers always describe their process in great detail so that it can be independently validated and gut-checked against their results. So if you see what looks like a mistake, and they don't explain why it's like that, that's red flags all around.

Centrifugal g-force at the rim is 27,900 so 1 gram of weight exerts about 28kg of force. Might be already beyond what a carbon fiber flywheel can accomplish, but if it's making 1.5kw at 10k rpm then that's good because it means it can make 150w at 1k rpm which is still enough for a party trick.

I think the fact that it "works" has been well proven through the years, what Buhler contributed was a verification that it was not some experimental error such as ions being thrown off. Also he's done a lot to try to build a theory around it - since it defies "Robert Maxwell Physics".
I would like to (at some point) try to reproduce the work of Becker and Bhatt ( https://arxiv.org/pdf/1810.04368 ). In their case, the asymmetry of the capacitor is achieved because one plate is *thicker* than the other.
Their best results got them 0.006 newtons on a 2.5x2.5 cm plate (the size of the plate is not mentioned in the paper, I asked Mike McCulloch about this and he gave me that info). He has his own theoretical explanation for the results ( https://www.researchgate.net/publication/353481953_Thrust_from_Symmetric_Capacitors_using_Quantised_Inertia ).
One of my curiosities is about thrust at high speed... for example if I can build a 50cm carbon fiber flywheel with (say) 1000 thrusters around the perimeter, and I can get it up to 10,000 RPM (without it exploding) inside a vacuum chamber (to remove air resistance), that should be 6 newtons of force and 157cm circumference so speed of the thrusters is 1.57 million cm per minute - 26 meters per second. 6 newtons at 26m/s should be something like 150 watts. Power consumption in the Becker and Bhatt was 0.05w, so for 1000 of them, it should be 50 watts, leaving it over-unity by 100 watts.
So if that works, it should be a toy free energy machine that makes a useless amount of power - because the flywheel can't handle speeds you need to make it useful. BUUUUUT, just for trolling physicists it's still worth it.

14. Converting a classic car to EV is indeed possible, and there are some not-so-obvious reasons why you might want to do that.
In the build (picrel) the guy swaps a powertrain from a crashed Leaf into a Mercury Comet wagon. What's particularly interesting about this swap is he replaced the entire back axle and used wheel rotor hardware from the leaf.
This means he has no more transmission, no driveshaft, no differential, wheel bearings are new, and break equipment is new.
Why this is interesting is because it means you could do this conversion with an orphan car such as a Hudson, International, or Packard, where replacement parts are unobtanium. Of course you can also do that with an LS, but then you're fitting engine, transmission, driveshaft, exhaust, and diff. That is *significantly* more work than fitting one electric transaxle.
You might consider fitting a transaxle from a Honda or something, but it pretty much needs to go in the front because engines are tall, and there are so many hoses and cables to deal with that it just takes all the fun out of the project.
Another reason why an EV classic car conversion is potentially interesting is because you're going to have total control over that EV system. Currently there are companies that make controllers for Leaf and for Tesla, and when you swap in that controller, all of the stuff that makes the car "locked down" goes in the trash.
It's the same concept as pulling the computer out of your LS and replacing it with a Holly Dominator.

I have a Volvo diesel from 2010, so no DEF but it does have a DPF. My experience is it's not horrible. I know how to check back pressure and where to put cleaning fluid if needed. Have never needed to so far, and my driving is probably 90% short trips.
But yes, they should just have 2 sets of rules, one for polluted cities and one for everywhere else.
Farmers unable to start their tractors because DEF freezing is "you deserve to lose a war" level stupidity".

Teslas are the best, they're just expensive and proprietary. A 3rd party Tesla control box is quite attractive for anyone thinking about a conversion, because that control box is gonna be "yours" no doubt.
It's basically to a Tesla what a Holly Dominator is to an LS.

Anyway, sorry I didn't complete my point... My point is that I think whatever emissions and safety standards the US has, they're basically rigged to make sure the only cars can get into the US are from countries that are "approved" by the ruling oligarchy.

Yeah, CAFE is one issue. Also you will notice that in America you can't buy a car from anywhere in the world except American colonies: Germany, Japan, Korea.
Volvo is an exception, and there are of course the oddball Italian supercars that make it in, but generally speaking anywhere that the US didn't fight a war, Americans can't buy cars.
I live in France and I occasionally see BYDs on the road here...

Unions can do that, yes. Particularly in Illinois where it's all just mafia.
But I think America's problems go deeper than this. The Americans who are willing and able to do real work and care about customer needs have been systematically shut out of the workforce for political reasons. And those who remain have been trained not to care about efficiency and customer needs, but instead about social causes.
In China, hard work and customer focus are specifically promoted by the central government. They have their own corruption problems, and over the next 100 years, the US is probably going to do better, but right at the moment they're ahead...

Finally watched the video. They're subtweeting BYD pretty hard, I don't think that's proven yet at all.
I think companies like Ford and Chrysler are not being serious about serving their customers, so BYD's sub-10k offerings might be trash and they might be quite decent for the money.
Also the notion that the only reason these are cheap is China govt subsidies is not really true. Dacia sells sub-10k vehicles in Europe and they're not "good", but they're are decent enough that taxi companies use them.
The idea that a car starts at 30k is an American phenomenon.

Yeah, this is a real problem, and I'm not sure there's any real incentive to stop it.
IMO it's not specifically the fault of EVs, but rather that as reliability improves, people stop caring about repairability. Even back in the 80s when they started cramming everything under the hood, timing chains that are ~impossible to service, etc.
You might imagine that delivery companies, taxi companies, cop fleets, etc will insist on buying cars they can service - but even for them, if the vehicle lasts 10 years without trouble, they might just not care.
Problem is, new car buyers are stupid, and they trade in every 5 years or so, so reliability after the first decade is not their problem. Maybe if the used market commands 20% of the car's initial cost, that matters, but if the car company can cut cost by 20% by making it impossible to maintain, it's a wash. And the company could also buy back used cars to support the market - even though they're junk.
For the car culture this is hell. You can put together an LS rig, and you can put together a rig on top of a commodity electric chassis, but in either case this is something you have to completely build yourself. Seems like there's just nothing comparable to Fox Body or Camaro ecosystem anymore...

The problem is you could starve everyone in Tehran to death and it wouldn't stop the missiles, because the missiles aren't coming from Tehran, they're coming from the mountains, and the people in the mountains have food and water supplies stashed and they're in tunnels where you can't bomb.
The reason why they want ground troops is because that's the only way to get to the tunnels and try to clear them. Can't do that from the sky.
The other problem is that bombing has already become very difficult because there are no functioning air strips left in the region to launch from, and (it turns out) getting close with aircraft carriers doesn't work because hypersonics can hit those too...
The whole US military thesis was based on the assumption that an F36 is IMPOSSIBLE to hit, but the Iranian thesis is that if you take out all of the support infrastructure within a few hundred miles of the territory, you don't have to hit them.

So, if EMFs cause stress in animals, then you would expect wild animals to avoid EMF sources. One massive EMF source is radio towers, which are often dumping hundreds of kilowatts of continuous energy into the sky...
So birds nesting on them should be absolutely unheard-of...

Okay, I need to be a bit more specific here.
If the question is "Can EMFs affect biology?" then the answer is obviously yes, and the perfect example is the microwave oven - which is deadly if you're inside it.
But there are also EMFs that pretty much everybody accepts are not harmful, for example from the AC electricity in your walls.
The question is, do the *specific* EMFs from an EV motor & related control system have a significant biological impact?
And that's not a question that can be answered "decades ago" because EVs didn't exist back then.

That's complex because they're trying to make "food grade" oil (although it's quite nasty in fact), if you're just looking for fuel, you can throw the seeds into one of these things and oil comes out the other side. Nobody will want to cook with it, but that doesn't matter.
