Specifically what I was debating was not which is most private/secure (I've seen the chart you linked, and I agree GrapheneOS is the easy winner there). I was debating whether that was more personally important to me than financially supporting an entire toolchain that moves away from requiring Google or other large corporations as much as possible. Currently, GrapeheneOS is reliant on Google products and that's a big point of hesitation for me.

I don't know why you're explaining all these things when I already agree with you. I have to admit this account's attitude can be a little off-putting. People have reasons to choose other options besides security and privacy.

Re: new phone. I ended up ordering a Pixel 9a. I'm going to continue to use @npub1kwa…e0nj. While it looks like LineageOS and /e/OS are great options for degoogled alternatives Graphene still looks like the best one for *security* in a serious sense. It's nice to be in a time period where there's multiple strong options tho. Looking forward to seeing what the field looks like next time (in hopefully 5-7 years).

Saw this at the current exhibit at Wash U's Kemper Art Museum. The whole exhibit is about seeds and the art is lovely, but this really stunned me. The drawers are full of seeds taken from plants growing locally, which you can take.

I try to have this conversation with non-techie friends sometimes. They'll complain about the internet. And I try to redirect. You don't hate the internet. The internet gives you wikipedia and constant connection with friends and family. You hate that most of your internet usage is mediated through platforms designed to keep your attention and sanitize your communication for advertisers.

Thinking about how to teach morals like "stealing is bad" in a way that doesn't rely on law and capitalism.
What i have so far is it's wrong because it affects other people's abilities to meet their needs.
There's also the fact that, in a more collective society, it would damage the sustainable allocation of shared resources. But that's not exactly a child-level explanation.
I'm specifically thinking about the 9-12 age area if anyone has ideas.

Absolutely. Graphene is a drop-in replacement. It has a relatively small set of phones it works on (only pixels I think) but there's a few others that are similar, like CalyxOS (which I have no personal experience with) that supports other devices.

Doing #FreeSoftwareAdvent for the first time, starting a little late. I'll focus on the free software that has the most impact on my daily life.
First up is the OSes I use. On desktop that's @npub1du2…f6r3. As someone that used to use Arch, then spent many years on Debian, I was impressed with how Endeavour balances Arch's ethos with some sane defaults to get you in.
Next is @npub1kwa…e0nj. This is my phone OS. It's pretty much a drop-in google android replacement. Love it.
