Use this trick to time your sprinklers for overhead irrigation:
- put out a rain gauge
- set a timer for a certain amount of time, 30 minutes or an hour
- read the rain gauge
- that's your application rate in inches/hour
- aim for 1 inch per week from rainfall or irrigation. This can vary widely depending on climate and soil type. 2 inches may be needed in hot summer months.
- use your finger to check the soil and dial in your application rate to your context!
* My wobblers have the gold nozzles which are the smallest, it takes me 6 hours to put down an inch! I will probably swap them for a larger nozzle.

Would you touch this caterpillar? It's the larval form of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly. Although they may look a bit gnarly, they don't sting. Their black spines are soft to the touch and are there to scare off predators.
I moved this caterpillar from a Luffa plant to its host plant, passion fruit vine (Passiflora incarnata). There are too many to count on this one passion vine! Now this little guy can get fat and happy and will turn into a butterfly soon. 🦋

Didn't get my strings set up in time to trellis these cucumbers, so I made this quick cattle panel trellis for them. It's not perfect but it does the trick! First harvest was 70 lbs from a 50' bed. Heirloom variety, Marketmore 76. Picked over 150 lbs from it so far!

Good question and I understand the sentiment. But, it takes a lot of work, time, risk and proper seasonality to get that head of broccoli. Also, seed is the smallest cost in microgreens production and is produced specifically for sprouting and microgreens. The benefits greatly outweigh the cost. I recommend folks start by growing broccoli sprouts, no soil or trays needed. Always organic seed. #grownostr

Got our cherry tomatoes pruned and trained up their strings. They're looking great. Didn't bury them super deep like I typically do, I was running into problems with that technique. Kohlrabi and beets are planted on the sides. Looking forward to this crop! 🍅

We have a goodwill food processor in our soil area as well, but yours is way nicer, that's a good find. They work great for biochar and I also use it to break up clumped amendments like magnesium sulfate or sul-po-mag. Also will grind up pelletized fertilizer to be a powder for fast action or better disbursement in a mix. #grownostr

It's been years since we've grown rainbow chard (always got cercospora so I quit growing it and switched to Fordhook Giant) but we reckoned it was time to try again and this crop turned out nice. Another challenge with chard is caterpillars, but thankfully they haven't wrecked this crop! 🐛

These bamboo planters are made from 4ft culverts cut in half from my neighbors. They wanted to get rid of them, asked if I wanted them and I said yeah, but only if they're halved. So they had their handyman cut them and I scooped them up with my tractor forks. There's 8 of them planted to a variety of bamboo. I will give the answer in another comment soon. #grownostr #bamboo

If you want something water soluble and simple, some kind of organic liquid fish hydrolysate fertilizer, ideally with humates and kelp as well. I get my transplants all the way to transplant stage without any added fert by adding compost and a number of other amendments to the mix, including a pelletized organic fertilizer available in our area called MicroLife. I also use their liquid fert called ocean harvest for a root dip before transplanting in the field, if you look that up you'll prob be able to find something comparable in your area. #grownostr

I run a CSA as my main sales outlet for my farm. Pros: veggies pre paid on subscription so you're "forced" to eat healthier without thinking about it, CAN be a cost saver but not always, it's the best way to support a grower and develop a close relationship with a local farm. Cons: No choice, payment up front for the season (if it's a traditional CSA), you share some risk of farming with the grower, some run free choice or alternative CSA models. I hope you'll take some pictures of you shares and let us know how you like the season. It's my favorite way to farm.

Tomato trellis. It's #9 wire attached with brace bands on the end bows, pulled as tight as possible by hand then tensioned with turnbuckle. Hangers are threaded on first, tek screwed to bows after tensioning.

We just installed a new piece of greenhouse film on our nursery tunnel. The old film blew off in a storm last winter.
When we moved to our property, it was this tunnel’s third time to be constructed. It was originally built when were at our first rented plot. It had solid wood bottom boards and hip boards, roll up sides made with metal pipe and ropes to hold the sides from blowing in the wind.
We grew microgreens on a shelf hanging from the ridge pole.
Then we had to disassemble and rebuild it at our second rented plot. It went back together mostly the same, though it was tricky to get some things to line up and I had to drill some new holes in spots for the boards.
Then we moved to our current place, and almost nothing lined up after I rebuilt the metal frame. There are holes in the hoops and posts for the boards to bolt on and instead of drilling another set of new holes to make it line up, I left them off.
I also used some old farm gates from the horse paddocks that were here as my greenhouse benches, they work great!
It was always a bit loose after the third build since I didn’t have the side boards on the hoops. Over winter, a storm ripped the plastic off. I chose to rebuild it a simpler way this time, utilizing some techniques from our caterpillar tunnels.
The result is fully functional, much simpler, uses less materials and can also be opened up more for ventilation. And it was expedient, only taking a few hours to get it restored!
Instead of using solid hip and base boards, I used shorter J bolts in the holes of the ground posts and leftover rope from our other tunnels. The two runs of rope are thrown over the tunnel back and forth and hooked into the J bolts.
The rope prevents the plastic from billowing in the wind.
It still has the original channel lock on the end bows to hold the plastic. I used a few side curtain hooks on bows 3 & 5 for holding up the plastic for ventilation.
We got it covered again just in time for all the rain.
This is where we grow microgreens and transplants for our CSA, it’s solar powered!
