1️⃣. Introduction:
The Book of the Courtier is one of the most important prose works of the Renaissance. Written by Baldassare Castiglione and first published in 1528, the book presents a detailed picture of courtly life during the Italian Renaissance. It explains the qualities and behavior expected from an ideal gentleman and lady in a noble court.
The work reflects the cultural values of Renaissance humanism, which emphasized education, moral character, artistic ability and graceful conduct. Castiglione wrote the book after many years of experience in Italian courts, especially the famous court of Urbino, which was known for its culture, refinement and intellectual life.
Unlike a simple guidebook, the work is written as a series of conversations among noble men and women. Through these dialogues, Castiglione describes the qualities that make a person admirable in society.
2️⃣. Historical Background:
The early sixteenth century was a period when Italian city-states such as Florence, Venice and Urbino were centers of art, literature and political power. Courts became places where rulers gathered scholars, poets, artists and diplomats. These courts were not only political institutions but also cultural centers where learning and refinement were highly valued.
The court of Urbino, where Castiglione spent many years was particularly famous for its intellectual atmosphere. Under the rule of Duke Guidobaldo da Montefeltro and his wife Elisabetta Gonzaga, the court attracted many scholars, poets and artists. Conversations about philosophy, art, literature and politics were common in this environment.
Castiglione observed these discussions carefully and later used them as the basis for his book. His purpose was to describe the ideal behavior of a courtier someone who served a prince while also maintaining dignity, intelligence and moral integrity.
The Renaissance belief in the development of the “complete individual” strongly influenced the work. According to humanist thinkers, a well-educated person should possess knowledge of literature, philosophy, history, music and physical training.
3️⃣. Structure of the Work:
The Book of the Courtier is written in the form of a dialogue and divided into four books (sections). Each section contains conversations that supposedly took place in the palace of Urbino around the year 1507.
The main speakers in the dialogue include several historical figures from the court, such as Ludovico da Canossa, Giuliano de’ Medici, Ottaviano Fregoso and others. Through their discussions the qualities of the perfect courtier gradually emerge.
4️⃣. Summary of the Four Books:
♦️Book I: The Ideal Courtier:
The first book discusses the basic qualities that an ideal courtier must possess.
According to the speakers, a courtier should be noble by birth and well educated. He should be skilled in military training because courage and physical strength were highly respected in Renaissance society. The name “megalodon” is a Greek-derived word meaning “giant tooth.”

Megalodons had hundreds of these giant teeth lining their ferocious jaws.
Like modern sharks, megalodons regularly shed their teeth, meaning that just one megalodon could have left thousands of teeth on the ocean floor.
Megalodons’ triangular teeth featured serrated edges that helped them slice into large prey.
We know megalodon ate whales and dolphins because researchers have found megalodon teeth embedded in ancient whale and dolphin bones, says Stephen J. Godfrey, curator of paleontology at the Calvert Marine Museum in Maryland.
Although rarer, researchers have also found megalodon teeth that were bitten by other megalodon teeth.
“It’s possible that those teeth were bitten only because they were scavenging an already dead megalodon,” says Godfrey, who has co-authored a paper on this phenomenon. “But there is evidence of cannibalism in modern sharks, and so it’s not impossible that large megalodons could have been preying on smaller megalodons.”

Despite its name and appearance, the lesser Madagascar hedgehog tenrec (Echinops telfairi) is more closely related to elephants and manatees than it is to true hedgehogs.
Weighing up to 7 oz (0.2 kg), this small mammal inhabits western Madagascar, where it feeds on insects, small vertebrates, and the occasional fruit.
Like a hedgehog, it can roll up into a ball to defend itself from foes. If a hungry predator dares to take a bite, it might end up with a mouth full of spikes!

The fossilized remains of an Archelon ischyros, largest sea turtle species ever documented.
The fossil was discovered in South Dakota, which was once covered by Western Interior Seaway during Late Cretaceous epoch....
Archelon ischyros could reach up to 4.6 meters (15 feet) in length from head to tail and weighed over 2.2 tons (4,900 pounds). The species lived approximately 80 to 66 million years ago. Its shell was similar to that of modern sea turtles, and it had paddle-like flippers.
According to researchers, around 5 to 10 million years ago, during the Miocene epoch, rivers and wetlands of South America were home to a creature so massive it dwarfed nearly every other turtle in history. This was Stupendemys geographicus, the largest species of prehistoric turtle ever discovered. Weighing up to two tons and measuring nearly 13ft in length, it was a true giant of the ancient waterways.
Its colossal shell alone could stretch longer than a small car, providing protection from predators and dominance in its environment. Fossil evidence reveals that some males bore massive horn-like projections on their shells, likely used for combat or display, while females had smoother carapaces. This sexual dimorphism offers a glimpse into their behaviors, rivalries, and possible mating rituals.
Despite its size, Stupendemys was not a predator but a herbivore. Its powerful jaws crushed vegetation, fruit, and aquatic plants, helping to shape the ecosystems of its time. Sharing its world with crocodilians, giant rodents, and early relatives of modern reptiles, it thrived in freshwater systems that once stretched across northern South America.

Kwidzyn Castle - Poland.
This is a large brick Gothic castle located in the town of Kwidzyn, Pomeranian province, Poland.
The castle is a prominent example of Teutonic Knights Gothic architecture, built in the 14th century.
One of its most striking features is the massive tower (dansker) which served both sanitary and defensive purposes, connected to the main building by a 56-meter-long elevated walkway.
The building was once the residence of military and religious leaders, and is now an important historical monument, attracting many tourists.

On November 11, 1935, U.S. Army Air Corps Captains Albert W. Stevens and Orvil A. Anderson conducted the historic Explorer II balloon mission.
Sponsored by the National Geographic Society and the Army Air Corps, the mission launched from the "Stratobowl" near Rapid City, South Dakota.
The crew reached a record height of 72,395 feet (22,066 meters), a manned balloon record that stood for 20 years.

10 Defensive Shooting Tips That Could Save Your Life.
Owning a gun is one thing, but knowing how to wield it is something else entirely. If you don’t know how to properly use your firearm in a self-defensive situation, not only do your chances of survival go down, but your chances of accidentally harming yourself or somebody else go up.
Fortunately, this can all be cured by just a little bit of regular practice on the shooting range where you can train with your defensive shooting skills and grow comfortable with your weapon of choice.
The tips you are about to learn in this article apply regardless of what type of firearm you’re using.
Here are the top ten defensive shooting tips that could save your life:
1. Buy Enough Ammo
What good is a gun without ammo? It could serve you well as a club, but that’s about it. Therefore, the first defensive shooting tip is to actually buy enough ammo to practice your defensive shooting in the first place.
Since ammo is a little costly, you can get around this by making it a habit to buy just one or two boxes a week. Your stockpile will grow steadily as a result.
2. Get A Proper Firing Grip
To hold a handgun correctly, you need to have both hands wrapped firmly around the grip of the gun with both of your thumbs forward. The fingers of your weak hand should be wrapped around the fingers of your firing hand. Hold the gun at eye level so you can peer down the sights.
3. Line Up Your Sights
Line up your front sight to your rear sight. You want the front sight to be aimed directly at the target. Your eye should then be focused directly on the front sight. Your rear sight and your environment beyond the front sight should therefore be a little blurry.
4. Keep Both Eyes Open
A natural thing to do is to shut your non-dominant eye when peering down the sights of a firearm. This is a big mistake for two reasons: it causes extreme fatigue in your eyelids, and it shuts out half of your field of vision (so you may not be able to see an enemy approaching).
Remedy this by keeping your front eye wide open and your second eye squinted but still open.
5. Keep Your Finger Indexed
One of the core rules of gun safety is to never place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Keep your trigger finger indexed, meaning it’s resting on the frame of the handgun above the trigger guard.
6. Control Your Firing
Spraying and praying with guns is fun in video games, but it’s a horrible shooting technique in real life. It makes the gun uncontrollable, decreases the chance of you hitting your target, and increases your chance of accidentally hitting someone else who you don’t want to.
Rather, control your firing so that each individual shot is deliberate. If you want to practice double taps, that’s fine, but you should never fire any rounds that you didn’t intend to or that were out of your control. Avoid flinching as well (where you jerk the gun when it doesn’t fire).
To practice not flinching, load some live rounds and dummy rounds into your magazine, but don’t know the order they are in. When the primer hits a dummy round and you flinch, you’ll need to correct that.
7. Reload Without Looking
Looking at your gun while fumbling around with a reload is a terrible thing to do. It removes your focus from the environment and it shows that you’re not a properly trained shooter. Therefore, put lots of practice into swapping out magazines and racking the slide to re-chamber the weapon.
Keep your eyes focused on the environment around you as you eject the spent magazine, draw a fresh new one, insert it into the weapon, and rack the slide. Draw the gun in closer to you when you reload as well before re-assuming a natural and proper firing stance.
8. Know How To Shoot One-Handed
While you should try to get a two-handed grip if possible, some defensive scenarios may require you to only shoot one-handed if you need to act quickly. Therefore, you should practice shooting one handed as well.
When shooting one handed, keep your firing arm stretched out, while your non-firing hand should be clenched into a first and held to your torso. This way you know where your non-firing hand is and you don’t risk it being out in your field of fire.
9. Learn How To Clear Jams
It doesn’t matter if you purchase the most reliable pistol on the planet; experiencing a jam is a very real possibility. Just as you must practice reloading, so you must practice clearing jams as well so you can get back into the fight.
Standard procedure with a jam is to firmly tap the magazine (most jams are caused by a not-fully inserted magazine) and then rack the slide to eject the failed round. If this fails, eject the existing magazine and load in a new one and rack it again. If this also fails to clear the weapon, you have a bigger problem on your hands.
10. Practice a Lot
The old saying goes that practice makes perfect, and practicing firing your weapon on the shooting range is not going to cut it. Make it a rule that you’ll practice on the shooting range a minimum of once per month, with a minimum of two hundred and fifty rounds fired each time.
Conclusion
Between owning two guns and not knowing how to use either of them or owning one gun and being a master at it, the second option is certainly more preferable if you’re serious about defending your life.
Take the tips you have learned in this article seriously and apply them during your real-life shooting range time.

Methoni Castle, a famous medieval fortress, is located in the town of Methoni, Messinia, Greece. The fortress is built on a peninsula extending into the Ionian Sea and connected to the mainland by a stone bridge.

This week in 1981, the AC/DC LP “Back in Black” went to #1 on the Australian albums chart (March 9)
Brian Johnson’s first record with the band after the passing away of Bon Scott was massive.
According to Angus Young, the album's all-black cover was a "sign of mourning" for Scott.
Atlantic Records disagreed with the cover, but accepted if the band put a grey outline around the AC/DC logo.
The issue of whether Bon Scott's lyrics were used, uncredited, on the album has continued to bubble away, and was a major focus of Jesse Fink's biography of Scott, Bon: The Last Highway.
In the book, Scott's girlfriend Margaret "Silver" Smith (died 2006) told Fink that Scott called her on the evening before his death to invite her out to celebrate writing lyrics for “Back in Black”.
In a 1991 interview with Kerrang! magazine, Angus was asked by journalist Paul Elliott, "Who wrote the lyrics on [‘Given The Dog A Bone’] and the others on Back in Black? Bon, or Brian, or both?", and he replied, "Bon wrote a little of the stuff.”
He also said in Rolling Stone in 1998:
“We had songs that he had written and we wanted to finish the songs."
However, in other interviews in 1981, 1996, 1998 and 2000, Young denied that any lyrics on the album were written by Bon Scott, and in 2005, he said, "There was nothing [on Back in Black] from Bon's notebook."
In his 2022 autobiography The Lives of Brian, Brian Johnson says:
“The conspiracy theories are legion – usually started by people who think they know but weren't there... it was me at the end of the pen, writing every night and every morning, with only the title to work with. That's what happened. That's the truth and I really hope that settles it."

Over time “Back in Black” has sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide, and is the second best-selling album in music history.
It’s success was immediate, debuting at #1 on the UK Albums Chart and reaching #4 on the US Billboard 200, which Rolling Stone called "an exceptional showing for a heavy-metal album".
Hmmm…..heavy metal?….don’t think so!
It topped the UK chart for two weeks and remained in the Top 10 of the Billboard chart in the US for more than five months.
In Australia, it reached #2 on the ARIA Charts.
The first single from the album, “You Shook Me All Night Long" became AC/DC's first Top 40 hit in the US, peaking at #35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
After “Back in Black” was released, AC/DC's previous LPs “Highway to Hell”, “If You Want Blood You've Got It”, and “Let There Be Rock” all re-entered the British charts, which made them the first band since The Beatles to have four albums in the UK Albums Chart simultaneously.
In 2020, “Back in Black” was ranked #84 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time", and in 2006 “Back in Black” was included by “Time” magazine in its list of the “100 Greatest Albums of All Time”.
In December 2021, the album was listed at #1 in Rolling Stone Australia's "200 Greatest Albums of All Time" countdown.

Gone, but not forgotten. 🦤 Today’s Exhibit of the Day is one of the most famous birds in history: the Dodo (Raphus cucullatus).
This iconic species is a lesson in extinction. Around the year 1600, Dutch soldiers found the Dodo on Mauritius Island, east of Madagascar. Less than 80 years later, it was gone. Deforestation, hunting, and the introduction of invasive species contributed to the downfall of this flightless bird.
Though it died out before photography, the Dodo’s skeleton offers clues about what this species was like. For example, this bird couldn’t fly—its wings were small for its size, its sternum had no keel (the support birds need for flight muscles), and it had thick leg bones made for walking.
You can see a Dodo skeleton in the Museum’s Hall of Biodiversity.

Battle of Hampton Roads, March 8, 1862.
The battle began when the large and unwieldy CSS Virginia steamed into Hampton Roads on the morning of March 8, 1862. Captain Buchanan intended to attack as soon as possible.
Virginia was accompanied from her moorings on the Elizabeth River by Raleigh and Beaufort, and was joined at Hampton Roads by the James River Squadron, Patrick Henry, Jamestown, and Teaser. When they were passing the Union batteries at Newport News, Patrick Henry was temporarily disabled by a shot in her boiler that killed four of her crew. After repairs, she returned and rejoined the others.
At this time, the Union Navy had five warships in the roadstead, in addition to several support vessels. The sloop-of-war Cumberland and frigate Congress were anchored in the channel near Newport News. The sail frigate St. Lawrence and the steam frigates Roanoke and Minnesota were near Fort Monroe, along with the storeship Brandywine. The latter three got under way as soon as they saw Virginia approaching, but all soon ran aground. St. Lawrence and Roanoke took no further important part in the battle.
Virginia headed directly for the Union squadron. The battle opened when Union tug Zouave fired on the advancing enemy, and Beaufort replied. This preliminary skirmishing had no effect. Virginia did not open fire until she was within easy range of Cumberland. Return fire from Cumberland and Congress bounced off the iron plates without penetrating, although later some of Cumberland's gunfire lightly damaged Virginia.
Virginia rammed Cumberland below the waterline and she sank rapidly, "gallantly fighting her guns as long as they were above water," according to Buchanan. Cumberland took 121 seamen down with her; those wounded brought the casualty total to nearly 150.
Ramming Cumberland nearly resulted in the sinking of Virginia as well. Virginia's bow ram got stuck in the enemy ship's hull, and as Cumberland listed and began to go down, she almost pulled Virginia under with her. At the time the vessels were locked together. Soon Virginia broke free, however, her ram breaking off as she backed away.
Buchanan next turned Virginia on Congress. Seeing what had happened to Cumberland, Lieutenant Joseph B. Smith, captain of Congress, ordered his ship grounded in shallow water. By this time, the James River Squadron, commanded by John Randolph Tucker, had arrived and joined Virginia in the attack on Congress. After an hour of unequal combat, the badly damaged Congress surrendered. While the surviving crewmen of Congress were being ferried off the ship, a Union battery on the north shore opened fire on Virginia, wounding Captain Buchanan.
In retaliation, Buchanan ordered Congress fired upon with hot shot, cannonballs heated red-hot. Congress caught fire and burned throughout the rest of the day. Near midnight, the flames reached her magazine and she exploded and sank, stern first. Personnel losses included 110 killed or missing and presumed drowned. Another 26 were wounded, of whom ten died within days.
Although she had not suffered anything like the damage she had inflicted, Virginia was not completely unscathed. Shots from Cumberland, Congress, and Union troops ashore had riddled her smokestack, reducing her already low speed. Two of her crew were killed, and more were wounded. One of the wounded was Captain Buchanan, who stood out into the open top of the Virginia, thinking it was perfectly safe, which led to him having his left thigh pierced by a rifle shot.
Meanwhile, the James River Squadron had turned its attention to Minnesota, which had left Fort Monroe to join in the battle and had run aground. After Virginia had dealt with the surrender of Congress, she joined the James River Squadron despite her damage. Because of her deep draft and the falling tide, however, Virginia was unable to get close enough to be effective, and darkness prevented the rest of the squadron from aiming their guns to any effect. The attack was therefore suspended. Virginia left with the expectation of returning the next day and completing the task. She retreated into the safety of Confederate-controlled waters off Sewell's Point for the night, but had killed 250 enemy sailors and had lost two. The Union had lost two ships and three were aground.
The United States Navy's greatest defeat (which would remain so until World War II) caused panic in Washington. As Lincoln's Cabinet met to discuss the disaster, the frightened Secretary of War Edwin Stanton told the others that Virginia might attack East coast cities, and even shell the White House before the meeting ended. Welles assured his colleagues that they were safe as the ship could not traverse the Potomac River. He added that the Union also had an ironclad, and that it was heading to meet Virginia.

Rei – Bow / Respect
Rei is the act of bowing in martial arts and is a symbol of respect, humility, and gratitude. Practitioners bow when entering or leaving the dojo, to instructors, and to training partners. It reflects the traditional value that martial arts training begins and ends with respect.
Osu / Oss – Expression of respect and perseverance
Osu (or Oss) is a common expression used in many karate schools. It can mean “yes,” “I understand,” or show acknowledgment and respect. More deeply, it represents patience, determination, and the spirit of pushing through challenges during training.
Dojo – Training hall
The dojo is the place where martial arts training takes place. The word literally means “place of the way.” It is not just a gym but a respected space for learning discipline, technique, and personal development.
Dojo Kun – Rules or guiding principles of the dojo.
Dojo Kun are the moral guidelines recited or followed by students in a dojo. These principles usually focus on character development, respect, sincerity, effort, and self-control, reminding practitioners that martial arts are about building strong character as well as physical skill.
Bushido – Way of the warrior
Bushido is the ethical code historically followed by the samurai of Japan. It emphasizes virtues such as honor, loyalty, courage, integrity, and respect. Many martial arts philosophies draw inspiration from Bushido as a guide for living with discipline and honor.
Mushin – No-mind (mental clarity)
Mushin refers to a state of mind where a martial artist acts without hesitation, distraction, or overthinking. In this state, techniques flow naturally and the practitioner responds instinctively with calm awareness.
Zanshin – Remaining awareness after a technique.
Zanshin is the state of continued alertness and readiness even after executing a technique. It reflects full awareness of one’s surroundings and potential threats, showing that a martial artist remains mentally present and prepared at all times. 🥋
