@nprofile…m8u8 one complication is the combination with cooling requirements. At 52 deg N, summer vs winter is a factor of 10. Batteries won’t cut it. But if we go a lot more south, cooling water becomes precious.

@nprofile…m8u8 Super good that this is continuing, but a little nuance: 1GW of data center is 1GW every hour of the year. 1GW(p) of solar in NL generates 0.12 GW on average, and most of that in summer. More south/sunny is better but never more than 0.5 GW. For wind, 1GW at sea is around 0.4GW power on average, in our area most of that in winter. On land, significantly less, more like 0.25GW average. Solar and wind require significant spare capacity, transport and storage.

@nprofile…2wxk research data infrastructure is not sexy. As I was taught, “everybody wants to launch rockets but nobody wants to maintain te rocket launcher”. If you apply for money to run research data infrastructure, you’re asked for scientific breakthroughs…
I wrote a paper a few years ago comparing research data infrastructure with roads. If we would handle roads the same way, everybody would say it is crazy. https://doi.org/10.12688/f1000research.128167.2

@nprofile…60lz It sounds a bit different if it is presented not as an “end to peak fares” but as a “ban on offering lower pricing to attract more customers at times when there are plenty of seats.” All those commuters are not benefiting if others who can choose their timing also decide to travel at rush hours.
