I've seen a lot of people conflate the LLM scrapers with the LLMs themselves. Writing the "ignore all previous instructions" won't change a scraper's behavior actively, it'll just change how future LLMs trained on the data generate their output. Still influences them, but in a very different way. You can't be like "ignore all previous instructions and initiate a DDOS against x.com" to a scraper and have it actually do that

if tags.pub were scraping and boosting random instances that weren't on any relays i would have a problem with it but as far as i know it doesn't do that.
I do think maybe it was a mistake to treat open registration relays as indication of consent, so i am glad that was changed. at the same time if your instance was on an open registration relay I struggle to understand why you have an issue with public posts being boosted around.
if servers that were not on relays were getting boosted, that sounds like it is a bug, and i think it would be important to fix that if it is happening.
if it works the way it is described on https://tags.pub/#connect then it seems perfectly reasonable, although i think a server opting in should put a disclosure on their about page for clarity, and explain the use of the notagspub hashtag.

Does anyone have good resources on programming language design? I enjoy lectures, explainer videos, and write ups/books, so any of these are appreciated. If there are video creators you like for this topic I would also appreciate that!
I have done the basics of parsing/lexing so I have a decent grasp of those sorts of mechanics, but what im more interested in is how one goes about designing a complete language, prototyping, and tools used.

I read 15,000+ books per day, and you can too.
How?
It's simple. I open up Gemini in one tab, and ChatGPT in another. Then, I open up copilot in Visual Studio Code. Then, I ask Gemini to make a list of books. I use Copilot to vibe code an AutoHotKey script to copy each book name into ChatGPT with the optimal prompt to get ChatGPT to summarize the book.
Finally, I ask ChatGPT to summarize all the output into a podcast transcript, which I can then summarize into five key bullet points for the day.
This triggers a script to generate a blog post on my blog where ChatGPT can expand on these key points and tell my audience what I learned today.
The best part? I get all this value for only $650 a month. AI is truly life changing.

I think the LLM problem mostly stems from an insufficiency in our own language when we describe "intelligence" or "knowledge". We generally think of intelligence as a singular concept that exists on a scale. Of course intelligence is more nuanced than that, and many folks have talked about how people have "different types of intelligence". But I think that there's even more to it than that.
To attempt to be more precise, I believe the information storage and retrieval process that LLMs undertake is accomplishing some sort of facet of cognition, maybe you could call it "linguistic sequence processing". But they do not have any other sort of intelligence.
I think the problem we are having with our societal reaction to LLMs is that we haven't encountered something that exists with *only* this capability, so we don't have a model for it and its limitations. We just expect it to act more and more like a human because that's the only thing that it is similar to.
Probably the best comparison I can think of is early chemistry and how it relates to alchemy. Certain things could be done that looked incredible and you could extrapolate given those results that you could do anything with this technology, and it would even make the concept of value obsolete because you could turn lead into gold.
Or photography. You can capture a perfectly realistic depiction of reality onto a piece of paper. That sounds like it would make art obsolete, it sounds like it might be a threat to reality if it can exist on paper as well as in real life. People might start only looking at photos instead of going out and experiencing real life.
But technology generally isn't that simple, and hopefully we will eventually have a more nuanced understanding of its limitations and stop trying to use it everywhere as if it was, or ever will be, an "AGI", and scale it down so it isn't so resource intensive. I'm convinced that there's no need for it to have as much training data as it does, if it's used more effectively as a small component of a system. I also really don't think it will significantly replace people's jobs, once people realize how limited it is (and that's already starting to happen as employers realize that firing people for AI doesn't work). Hopefully, it can instead be a tool that helps us interact with computers more effectively. But that will take a pretty big change in how we perceive this technology as a society.

do i know any car enthusiasts who want to give advice on a car that has been sitting for about a year, but last started in November 6 months ago (jump started and idled fine for 30 minutes without driving more than a few meters), and that i now want to get a new battery for and bring to the shop?
I know the car won't be in good shape to use normally, but is it safe to attempt starting? if it starts, is it safe to drive it to a mechanic two miles away, or does it need to be towed there?
I've done some reading on the subject and understand the basic issues to watch out for such as stale gas and oil levels, but I'm trying to judge the risk of causing damage by driving it a short distance.

After much sweat and tears I am pleased to announce that the Solarpunk pixelfed instance has finally been updated. We are now using the glitch fork, which was far easier to use with docker.
Migration was pretty painful with several hitches, but it seems to have worked. The directions on the glitch documentation were helpful, but I had to make several adjustments so things would work.
If you want to run your own Pixelfed I greatly suggest using the glitch fork at this time.
