I always start with the caveat that even when I agree with Peterson, I do not share the core of his message and fundamental views. That said, here's another one I can only applaud.
He says at one point that liberals and conservatives have been asleep at the wheel of the education system for 60 years.
I can attest that 30 years ago when I was about to go to uni in Catalonia, it was already well known and a recurrent joke that only the most useless, lunatic, radical communist potheads and drug addicts among us picked the Faculty of Teacher's Education. Mostly, that was one of the very few faculties they were able to enroll on at all with their terrible marks.
Once on campus, we kept laughing at them and joking about how while we were in the classroom, you could see them having their "classes" literally on a patch of grass singing songs and reading Marxist pamphlets.
In the meantime, they kept churning our teacher's diplomas and sending them to public and private schools alike...
And here we are now, when they have become one of the most powerful gangs and effectively run the school system autonomously from government, pushing their ideological drivel, and their incompetence, on everybody's children.
I think it's almost impossible to eradicate them from the public system, and the only way to mitigate the harm is to allow real parental choice. And even that is fought with a fury unlike any other and will be an uphill battle.

Actually I've been watching Star Trek in internal chronological order for the past few months, combined with other shows (like the aforementioned Battle Star Galactica, which I watch like once a year, and others like Severance).
So, now I'm half way through S01 of the original series, after watching ST: Enterprise, and ST: Strange New Worlds (S01 and S02, leaving the rest for the very end).
One of the most interesting things is how the original series is a lot darker/serious than I remembered from my childhood when I first watched it, and how in contrast with the two modern ones, the crew of the Enterprise keep systematically dying in relatively huge numbers on every single episode!
Kirk and the others actually go through some serious moral dilemmas, and even if they're obviously "the good guys", they don't hesitate to wade into the "gray" zone quite often. I think the newer shows have lost some of that (even if I enjoy them a lot too).

I meant that it doesn't simply take an existing snapshot and "updates" it, which is a relatively quick process. It does a full scan, like when you do it for the first time, which takes a very long time.

So finally yesterday I did a couple of purchases on Robosats, and that went how it went.
This morning I was finally to catch a reasonable (0% premium) offer on @npub1sqn…5net of the right amount I like to buy to keep the total fees including network and exchange fees remain around my threshold of 1% of the purchase.
It was a fleeting one: I checked and there was nothing, then I refresh and it appeared. But when I took it, and Bisq did the corresponding availability check, it had suddenly gone offline. So I (kind of desperately, I admit) refreshed a few more times, and there it was again after a couple of minutes. So I pounced.
Parallel to that, my offer to buy was still sitting there untouched, even though I had increased the premium to 1%, so I deactivated it and I'll turn it back on next time I want to buy.
Never seen anything like that, over a week with no takers is insanity. The proof of that is that the sell offer I took was a perfect match to my own offer to buy, except I was willing to pay 1% over the premium, and still this seller made an offer to sell at 0% premium, rather than taking mine. Talk about irrational (yes, maker/taker fees are different, but the 1% would more than pay for that, and then some).
I wonder if there's some sort of problem with the platform that causes offers not to be seen (in either direction, because I couldn't see any "normal" offers I'd take either). I was buying as usual just a couple of weeks ago, and we had this update to v 1.9.19 last week.

I did two purchases on Robosats, both times the deposit locked without a glitch. Both times the LN invoice to receive the funds wouldn't stick. I was lucky ToS accepts onchain, otherwise I imagine I would have lost the deposit.
I use LN to purchase varied stuff and I can zap and be zapped here on Nostr, no problem.
I do have one channel open only, so Alby Hub indicates "46% node health". The channel is under 10% of its total capacity, though, so I don't think I really need to open another one. Do you think that's the problem?

It totally is my business, since this is a war that's happening on the border of the EU, where I live.
More broadly, I don't like having a terrorist warlord mafia regime as a neighbor, who wages a perpetual psychological war against us -- only because so far he hasn't been able to wage a hot one. Especially against its former colonies in the Baltic, East and Central Europe who do suffer immediate, physical consequences of this harassment daily.
As for the US' business - I have long said Trump is right and justified to demand that Europe takes care of its own defense. The deranged speeches and comments he and his circle are making are at least half for the purpose of shocking Europe into getting its shit together. Again, I'm 100% for that.
The other half is where the line is crossed and they wade into absurd lies and outright support for Russia. If helping Ukraine is not the business of the US, neither is helping Russia.
Doing that can only be explained by a mix of good old American ignorance and lack of education, or more worryingly, for other more material reasons that for the last 10 years I have refused to believe exist - and so far I am still choosing to believe it's ignorance and lack of education.

On Bisq I can consistently put out offers to buy at market price, and can often find offers to buy at -0.5%, or even sometimes as low as -2% (and IIRC, a cuple of years ago I caught some even lower, like 3 or 5% under).
The issue is being smart enough to understand maker/taker fees, network fees, and so on, and knowing not to do small transactions, because the trade involves several ones even if it's mostly automated.
I keep my total costs below 1%. If a rough estimate tells me it's going to be more, I just don't do take the trade or make the offer to begin with.
I'm gonna take a look at Peach now, thanks for the tip.

Not on Bisq. I often buy below market price even. The fact that it's taking one week to do a trade, I've never encountered something like this. Suddenly it's gone dead.
Robosats is giving me all sorts of pain for what should be a simple purchase.
Alby doesn't work even though it's the wallet they literally say "offers the best experience". Holy fuck, what is it like with the others then?
So in the end, I'm forced to settle this trade on chain, with the associated fees - which I would have never done had I known in advance, because it's a small trade of a few hundred bucks, so the fees eat into it and make it even more crazy expensive. All in all, a huge loss I'm taking with this "experiment".
Not to mention, the whole system is super insecure. You have to chat your way through the whole transaction. Exactly the opposite to Bisq, where chat is discouraged to minimize unsafe interactions.
Well, I never liked the platform to begin with, but I gave it another try today, with equally poor results. If Bisq doesn't come back to life, I'll have to deal with this shit, but that probably means ditching @npub1get…0nfm for good. I'm not gonna have a salad of wallets and platforms, passwords, signers and shit for what should be a very straightforward operation.

That's not an economic argument. If you want to discuss fluffy unicorns and fairies, that's totally OK. But then do not misrepresent V4V as an economic model.
I actually think *it is* an economic model, and gave one case in which it does comply with the definition of a free trade, which requires that both parties get more from the exchange than they initially had. The seller prices its work at ZERO, so anything they get at all is by definition more than they originally had, ergo you have a valid trade.
The issue is those who have a different expectation and end up "losing out" with the trade because they expect people to somehow pay more than they themselves ask for. That's not a "trade", it's entitlement, charity, emotional blackmail... there are many possible definitions depending on each person's concrete attitude.

It depends on the expectations of each participant.
What it is not, is a market mechanism, because the producer/supplier/seller is setting the price/value of the item transacted at zero. So the correct price of the item will always be zero and the vast majority will pay exactly that, even if they could and would be willing to pay more to get access to the item.
So anybody expecting the outcome to be similar to that of a normal efficient market will eventually get frustrated, as we constantly see here with the droves of "content creators" who bitch and moan about "not being valued" -- they are the ones not valuing their own content though.
For those not having these type of expectation and understanding that lack of barriers to access is what defines ownership (so, if you put out a content for free and without access controls, you don't own it and can't expect payment for it), it's a great model because every single penny they receive is more than their own valuation of the item they gave away for free. They are receiving more than they signal to other participants that they deserve, which is great.

I just came back home from a business trip to Lithuania - this was before Vance's speech. MAGA people have no idea how determined people are up there to never give in a inch to Putin, and how deep and irreversible their hatred for Russia is.
They're more than ready and willing to get into a hot war against Putin, and know that the rest of the Baltics, including Finland, as well as Poland, feel the same.
I have always defended MAGA's position that the US should stop paying for NATO and that Europe must get its shit together and protect its own borders. This is also the sort of jolt that we need to rebuild our industrial capabilities.
I doubt very much Trump is willing to go as far as totally getting out of Europe, but if he did it would be a blessing in disguise.
The unfortunate consequence is that as we are already seeing, Trump causes a deep rejection among the European populace. So, far from causing a generalized change in leadership in Europe, he will contribute to consolidate the current one.
The Eurocrats and their media cronies are gloating like ever with their phony condemnation of Vance's speech, which is a true oxygen balloon for them. Ditto for Musk.
If they wanted to give the AfD in Germany "one last little boost" to win, to give an example, they've achieved the exact oppoaite. Same in France if they hoped to get rid of Macron any time soon.

So a few months ago I extensively documented here my days-long struggle to get my bitcoin node up and running on an old laptop with Ubuntu 22.04 -- mainly due to a mix of Bitcore's incomprehensible retardness in making one's life difficult if you want to use an external drive to store the blocks, and Ubuntu's retardness in forcing Snaps down users' throats.
Then there's the usual problems with Linux, like not having Logitech drivers for my mouse and keyboard, and being force to find a way around it (Solaar). Having to edit multiple config files to get simple stuff working, like my VPN, and so on and so forth.
Incidentally, I also completely switched to linux on my "main use" box, in this case Mint, because I got PTSD with Snaps and Ubuntu, and it's a lot worse in this sense.
I had to roll back the kernel a couple of weeks ago because HDMI support is completely broken. I haven't been able to fix a weird issue with bluetooth headphones that causes my audio to play **faster** (not slower) than video (probably also an HDMI/graphics card support problem). My wired connection randomly drops and I have to restart to get back online. Voodoo black magic to make mouse and keyboard buttons partially work.
Four times I have had to deal with boot problems. The first time, the computer would just be caught in a loop unable to boot AT ALL, just straight from BIOS to black screen, so I had to make a live USB on the other computer, and go from there. The other times, the kernel just broke on me but I was able to just go initframs manually from Grub and let it fix itself.
Not that I would go back to Windows ever again. Not happening, ever. But as much as I have been able to deal with all this stuff, I can see how none of my friends and family would be able to, even if they wanted.
Anyhow, it's been a while since my bitcore machine on Ubuntu has started to complain that I should update to 24.04... and I'm scared shitless by the thought.

1. Oh, the sheer RETARDNESS of dumping Nvidia stock due to the DeepSeek CCP psyop, when admittedly DeepSeek has been trained using... NVIDIA CHIPS. If anything, DeepSeek proves that Nvidia chips can do even more than previously thought, and consolidates their monopoly.
2. The sheer stupidity of those babbling on about wHErE's YouR raTIoNaL INveSt00r n0w, EH? all over the internets. "Rational" as in the much touted "rational actor/investor" doesn't mean "an actor who never voluntarily incurs a monetary loss when making decisions in life". It simply means an actor who makes decisions based on their SUBJECTIVE self-interest IN THE MOMENT.
I've never found much use for this concept, other than to cause me to look at actions I cannot comprehend and make an effort to try to put me in the other person's shoes and see the world the way they see it and try to make sense of their calculation, which is NEVER numerical.

Like, appealing to the courts to prevent an abuse of power, as if there was any sort of constitutional guardrails and checks and balances on the legislative/executive power (or on the judiciary itself)... in Europe?

I just did another payment today. I get it ready on my wallet, and of course I check mempool dot space live, to make sure. It's 1 sat/VB across the board, low, medium, high. So I say alright here we go, sweet.
That was two hours ago, so I just checked the transaction because the receiver doesn't say anything, and of course now the ETA is "not anytime soon". The last blocks are showing 3, 4, 5 SATs. Well at least my tx wasn't purged.
I'll wait amd risk it, I guess?
But then I remember, mempool dot has that accelerator thing, so hey maybe I can learn something today and get this payment done too.
So by default the accelerator thing tells me to pay -- I'm not kidding -- 60,000 sats to boost this mf. OK maybe some moron will just do it, but I can see the "customize" button too. Unfortunately the cheapest option of gives me is still stupid, at 10 sats, when the highest right now is just 4. What the fuck, mempool dot thief?
So I go back to my own wallet and realize it also has an "accelerate" button. And it actually allows me to fulky set the fee myself. Nice!
This is the first time I use this feature, and I have to say I am really really pleased with it.

It's just my speculation though, based on the fact that this would be a federal tax. It could also be something like the Feds setting a bracket with a minimum and a maximum. In that case yes, there would be some room for competition, albeit mitigated.

I don't think so. It sounds like the tax will be set by the Feds, and they'll simply pass on the responsibility to police companies and to collect the tax to the States, likely in exchange for a %, maybe even most of it. So it will be neutral in terms of jurisdictional competition.

Sales tax is an evil form of taxation. The poorer you are, the more you pay because you can't avoid consuming if you're poor. Rich people have a choice to spend, and on what.
The consequence is that very soon, if not from start, there will be huge pressure to have different rates for different item categories, exemptions, etc. further complicating compliance.
And this is one of those taxes that people do not pay directly, and companies have to collect on behalf of the State. Which is absolutely evil in the type of mindset that it creates (similar to the effects of AML/KYC on banking).
Tariffs have a similar effect on consumers, but at least they don't overburden companies and individuals with extra administrative costs and keep the responsibility and liability to collect on the State.
Don't get me wrong, ending the income tax is a net positive, regardless because it's the number 1 Evil tax (tied with the corporate tax and capital gains tax -- they're a triplet taxing the same thing: productive work), so I welcome it.
But doing it this way makes it a lot less than it could be.
