I think a lot of people didn't realize that the trolley problem is a metaphor.
But really, the people who complain about voting being useless just want to sit on their ass and do nothing, instead of trying to do what they can to make things better. I'd think it's because that would require going outside and doing things, instead of just complaining on the Internet; and these sorts of people just can't be bothered to do anything that actually matters.
It's also worth remembering that the Dems have a good chance of being convinced to change their mind on things in response to protestors; meanwhile the Republicans are literally just evil and want to turn this country into a fascist dictatorship. (Key word is want.)
