Belarus is seizing property and bank accounts of democracy activists living in Canada.
Families still inside Belarus are being harassed as leverage. Photos from a rally in Alberta become evidence of "extremism." Apartments are confiscated without court dates or appeals.
Since the fraudulent 2020 election and the mass protests that followed, over 1,100 political prisoners remain behind bars. More than 8,000 politically motivated convictions. An estimated 500,000 to 600,000 Belarusians have fled the country.
But fleeing doesn't mean safety anymore. At least 207 participants in Belarusian Freedom Day events held in Canada, the US, UK, Poland, and Lithuania were identified by authorities and charged with "facilitating extremist activities."
The playbook is straightforward: seize property back home, threaten family members who stayed behind, file charges in absentia with sentences up to seven years and fines up to $750,000. "Extremism" becomes whatever the regime decides it is. Facts and evidence are irrelevant.
This is transnational repression. Authoritarian states projecting control beyond their borders to silence dissent in free countries. It's happening from Belarus, Russia, China, and Iran. The assumption that democratic nations provide a safe haven for political exiles is eroding in real time.
Distance no longer protects you.

Thinking Machines Lab released Inkling, a 975B parameter model with open weights available for download.
That last part is the story.
Most people interact with AI by renting access to a black box. The model can be updated, the price can rise, the acceptable-use policy can tighten, a government can pressure the provider, the service can disappear.
That's fine for casual chat. It's a dangerous foundation for critical business processes, medical research, financial workflows, and national infrastructure.
Inkling is an American counterexample to Chinese open-weight models like DeepSeek and Qwen that are spreading globally because developers can download, modify, and build on them. The country that supplies the foundation shapes the next layer of global products, standards, and technical dependencies. Winning the benchmark while losing the ecosystem would be a hollow victory.
The argument is Hayekian. Much of the knowledge that makes an organization valuable is tacit, local, and private. A centralized lab cannot collect all of it. It cannot define one alignment layer that reflects the values of every person, company, community, and country. Customizable models let organizations encode their own specialized knowledge into the weights instead of renting the same generic model as everyone else.
Open weights are not the end state of AI sovereignty. They are one necessary step toward it.
The bitcoin parallel is obvious. Bitcoin gives people the ability to own money without renting permission from a central bank. Open AI points toward the ability to own intelligence without depending on a corporate API.
The AI race is not only about intelligence anymore. It is about sovereignty.

Lilly is building a healthcare AI platform disguised as a pharma company. GLP-1 drugs fund the machine. AI accelerates the pipeline. And now psychedelics give them a whole new frontier of neuroscience to run through it.
If you own LLY for Mounjaro, you're underwriting the wrong thesis.

Afghanistan's first 100 days cost ~$31.5 billion. Iran's 108 days cost 3.6x that.

New York just became the first US state to impose a statewide moratorium on new data centers.
Governor Hochul signed an executive order pausing state environmental permits for hyperscale facilities drawing 50 megawatts or more for up to a year.
The order covers new discretionary permits that haven't already been deemed complete. Hochul framed it as a response to the AI computing boom threatening to hike electricity bills and drain energy and water supplies.
But the moratorium is just the start. Hochul is also pushing to repeal sales tax exemptions for large data centers, create a fund that makes data centers pay into the state's aging power grid, and publish a framework that lets local governments negotiate direct payments and infrastructure funding from developers.
A $19.4 billion data center proposed in Genesee County is among the projects that could get caught by the order.
State lawmakers already passed the Responsible Data Center Development Act in June, which goes even further by covering facilities above 20 megawatts. Hochul hasn't signed it yet but used the executive order as a faster path to act now.
New York is the first state to go this far, but the trend is spreading. Dozens of cities and counties have passed their own data center restrictions, and Arizona signed a three-year moratorium on new sales tax breaks for the facilities last month.

The OMFIF just surveyed 90 official institutions for their 2026 Global Public Investor report. 74 central banks and 16 sovereign wealth funds managing over $10 trillion in assets.
The US dollar is the only currency where more reserve managers plan to cut exposure than increase it over the next 12-24 months. Every other currency on the chart is net positive. Euro, renminbi, sterling, Aussie dollar, yen, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar. All green. The dollar is the lone red bar.
This is the first time on record that a major survey of public investors has shown more central banks planning to reduce dollar allocations than add to them.
Meanwhile, 74% of respondents expect moderate or significantly lower US dollar holdings in global reserves over the next 5 years. A record 45% plan to add gold.
The institutions that literally create fiat currency are telling you they don't want to hold the world's reserve fiat currency. They're rotating into gold, into euros, into renminbi, into anything that isn't tied to a $36 trillion debt pile with no credible plan to shrink it.

Trump's 2025 financial disclosure just dropped and the numbers are staggering.
The sitting President of the United States personally earned $1.4 billion from crypto last year, more than every publicly traded US crypto company.
That's more than Coinbase ($1.26B net income). More than CleanSpark, IREN, and Bitdeer combined. Meanwhile, companies like Core Scientific, Hut 8, Galaxy, and Bitfarms all posted losses.
The breakdown: ~$791 million from World Liberty Financial (token sales, governance tokens) and ~$635 million in royalties from the $TRUMP memecoin through licensing deals.
For context, the same memecoin that made Trump $635M has cost retail investors over $3.8 billion in trading losses.
This is now creating a real political flashpoint. Senate Democrats are using the disclosure to push ethics provisions into the CLARITY Act, the bill that would define when crypto is a security vs a commodity. They want language explicitly preventing the president and his family from profiting off crypto while in office.

The Bitcoin Policy Institute just filed to intervene as a defendant in a New York lawsuit that should concern every bitcoiner who self-custodies.
A pseudonymous plaintiff "Noah Doe" is trying to use New York's 1958 lost-and-found property law to claim ownership of ~39,069 dormant bitcoin addresses holding an estimated 3.8 million BTC (~$293B).
The argument is if your bitcoin hasn't moved in 5+ years, anyone can download your public address, report it to the NYPD as "found property," and claim it's theirs.
The addresses targeted include wallets linked to the Mt. Gox hack, the Counterparty burn address, and 21,000+ addresses attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto.
Matthew Boyer is stepping in because they hold bitcoin long-term, just like millions of other HODLers, and this legal theory would criminalize the most basic principle of self-custody, holding.
Inactivity is not abandonment. A public address is not "found property." And a law written for lost wallets and umbrellas has no business being applied to the Bitcoin blockchain.
A hearing is set for July 14. The outcome could set major precedent for property rights in bitcoin.

The European Parliament just voted to extend a rule that lets platforms scan your private messages without a warrant or prior suspicion. It runs until April 3, 2028.
This covers DMs on Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, and Xbox, plus emails on Gmail and iCloud.
The original rule was introduced in 2021. MEPs actually rejected extending it back in March by a vote of 311 to 228 and the rule lapsed on April 3, 2026. But Brussels brought it back on an "urgent basis" before summer recess, and this time the motion to reject it failed to get the majority needed.
Former MEP Patrick Breyer called it "a farce" that "damages democracy," pointing out it passed against the will of most voting MEPs.
The data shows the system doesn't work. Only 36% of abuse reports in 2024 came from scanning private chats. Most came from public posts and cloud storage. 48% of alerts weren't even criminally relevant. 40% of investigations from these alerts targeted minors themselves. 99% of Meta's reports were about material already known, not new abuse being caught.
The European Commission itself admits there is no evidence this scanning has increased convictions or rescued more children.
This is the voluntary version. A separate permanent law, the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation, is still being negotiated. That version could force scanning on every platform and reach into encrypted messages like Signal and WhatsApp.
Breyer warned this vote removes any pressure on the Council to pursue real reform. They can just keep extending the old system instead of passing something better.
The playbook is clear. Wrap mass surveillance in child safety language, bypass democratic opposition through procedural tricks, and buy time to push the permanent version through with less scrutiny each round.

Senator Ron Wyden just sent a letter to Senate leaders Thune and Schumer urging them to preserve Section 604 of the Clarity Act, the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act.
This is arguably the most important section in the entire bill. It would codify that non-custodial software developers should not be treated as money transmitters simply for publishing open-source code.
Wyden's argument is straightforward. The Bank Secrecy Act and the criminal code need to be read together. If a developer builds software that lets people manage their own digital assets but never takes custody of those assets, treating that developer as a money transmitter is legally incoherent.
He points out this already aligns with existing FinCEN guidance and emerging case law. He's not asking for something new. He's asking Congress to codify what regulators already acknowledge.
He also pushes back on critics who claim the BRCA weakens anti-money laundering protections. His letter explicitly states the provision would unify FinCEN and DOJ policy, keep law enforcement focused on actual criminals, and includes an exception ensuring that any non-custodial developer found handling illicit funds is not protected.
The political context matters. There's uncertainty over whether certain law enforcement groups will accept the BRCA language and whether changes will be needed to win votes from Democratic senators like Cortez Masto and Warner. Wyden co-sponsored the standalone BRCA alongside Senator Lummis, making this a genuinely bipartisan push.
Worth noting that while Section 604 deserves to be preserved, the Clarity Act as a whole remains a mixed bag. The bill extends the Patriot Act, contains provisions that could be interpreted to impose compliance burdens on open-source wallet developers, and is largely being championed by the broader crypto industry looking to legitimize token issuance.
Section 604 is the part worth fighting for. Whether the rest of the bill deserves the same enthusiasm is another question entirely.

Meta just disclosed it faces $1.4 trillion in potential penalties in the teen mental health case brought by state attorneys general.
That number is nearly equal to Meta's entire market cap.
Twenty-nine states are suing Meta for violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act by collecting data from underage users without parental consent.
They allege Facebook and Instagram were intentionally designed to be addictive to children, fueling anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide. Four of those states are also targeting Meta for misleading the public about safety risks.
The $1.4 trillion figure comes from how California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey have proposed penalties should be calculated if they win. Meta's lawyers called it "outlandish" and said a sanction of that size "has no analog in the history of consumer protection enforcement."
This is not happening in a vacuum. Meta already lost two major cases this year. A California court found it liable for fueling social media addiction. A New Mexico jury found it failed to protect kids from online predators.
The company now faces more than 2,400 pending lawsuits from school districts, parents, and governments in what critics call a "Big Tobacco moment" for social media.
The trial is set for August 18 in Oakland. The actual penalty will almost certainly be far less than $1.4 trillion. But the scale of the legal exposure tells you how regulators view what happened.
This is a company accused of knowingly designing products that harmed an entire generation of children for profit, and 29 states are lined up to make the case.

The first product from Elon Musk's $60 billion AI coding bet could drop as early as Wednesday.
According to The Information, SpaceXAI and Cursor plan to launch their first jointly developed model after pushing back earlier this week to improve efficiency.
SpaceX acquired Anysphere, the startup behind Cursor, in an all-stock deal announced days after the biggest IPO in history. Before SpaceX came calling, Cursor was closing a $2 billion round from Andreessen Horowitz, Thrive, and Nvidia at a $50 billion valuation.
Musk's team preempted that raise with a $60 billion offer and a $10 billion break-up fee if the deal fell through.
The deal solved two problems at once. SpaceX pitched IPO investors on a $28 trillion total addressable market with $26 trillion from AI, but xAI, Musk's original AI venture that merged into SpaceX earlier this year, was in trouble.
All 11 co-founders left by March. Musk admitted xAI "was not built right the first time around." Grok had generated deepfake controversies and legal challenges from the California AG.
Meanwhile Cursor had a real product and explosive growth but was burning cash faster than its $3.2 billion in prior funding could sustain. SpaceX got a credible AI asset. Cursor got the resources to scale.
Wednesday's reported launch is the first real test of whether the integration produces something that justifies the price tag.
The AI coding space is brutally competitive with Anthropic, OpenAI, and others all fighting for the same developers.
