Most of my activities have creativity built into them. I photograph while hiking. I brainstorm while walking.
Most, but not all.
Wikipedia is always a temptation. As a pre-internet child, I’d spend countless hours paging through encyclopedias to read about various topics. That interest in a multitude of subjects endures, though it can serve my writing.
Mostly, though, it’s a distraction.

I’m a writer first.
Magic serves story, not the opposite.
I’ve written stories about the horror of developing magic, having a gift you can’t control and that will make you different, and likely hated.
People can relate to that. I can relate to that.
Magic can be internal/external, direct/indirect. In nature, there’s a tame version and a wild, powerful version. It took years to incorporate technology. That’s another issue…

I don’t use it. Well, not directly.
The reason I don’t use it directly, besides not speaking it, is that Ontyre is a different world where there never was Latin.
On the other hand, when naming characters and locations, I sometimes take a word and delve deep into its past to find the root and work from that. Sometimes, I base a name on the Latin, or even Greek.
I seldom, though, track my name origins.

Book-1: Thanks to a “test,” Riparia experiences a past moment again and slowly realizes she can influence it.
Book-4: A truth learned is so profound that the world that hasn’t changed seems altered to her.
In Mistaken Arrival, Amatha, who was raised in isolation with the purpose of aiding a nation, ends up in a different, distant one.

Thus, PWA would question something and I'd agonize over it. Now, I know what I want from PWA—and what I don't.
"Giving yourself grace." Yes. "Differently than the norm" means your own path. I can identify with that, I'd also suggest that it takes us longer than everyone else because it's less a path and more bushwhacking.

I had the desire to write a fantasy series, but when I drafted Book-1, Trust in the Forgotten, I wasn’t decided that it’d be one. That didn’t happen until I was satisfied with its sequel.
I don't force a series to happen.
Book-1 was like starting the car, but until the tires start to roll you aren’t going anywhere. That was Book-2.

This brings to mind the “leviathan drum.”
In the oceans of Ontyre, there are sea monsters, which once prohibited ocean travel, what with ships attracting death.
A pirate invented the manual leviathan drum that confused sea monsters and allowed pirates to venture farther from the coast. They sought shelter on an archipelago from which they raided Emprensen Empire coastal ships.
That archipelago later became Pannulus.

As I say, perfection is a fool's errand, but I also have a grave dislike of the term, "good enough." I understand how many use it, but what is it? I could publish a first draft and say, "It's good enough."
I suppose my preference would be that I publish when a work "meets my standards," which are high, but not perfection.

It’s neither.

When I was 12, we visited the dry Rocky Mountain region and I had instant relief. Eventually, I moved here. The downside is if there’s continual sun. I burn easily. Thus, I found a place that, although it has a dry climate, is frequently cloudy.
The irony is that I love the rain. It’s as if it’s in my English-Irish heritage.

I’m not sure how many words I’ve removed beyond “a lot,” but I know that Book-5 lost 13K words when I used the editing system on it.
When one word is substituted for wordy phrases of four or five words, that’s what happens. Yet, I read it afterwards and it seems like there’s more story.

I grew-up with the promise of technology, of a new age, but as you say, it became superficial thanks to commercialization.
In a way, I could see that promise, and sensed it with deep-space probes , shuttles, and the space station, environmental protections, too. After the oil crisis in 1973, I thought it was okay because of alternative fuels.
Except, of course, greed and war trumped solar and wind. High speed rail didn't happen here. Instead, promise faded while leaders bickered and schemed.

Even in a group, while some excel with vision, wisdom, or a particular talent and/or specialized knowledge, all possess compassion and righteousness.
They also all help compensate for the failings of the others, the pieces greater than the whole.

First and foremost, romance flows from the characters, not the plot. Shoving two people together isn’t enough.
The original female half of my Kovenlore leads was someone else. They didn’t work. So, I replaced her after drafting Book-4, then rewrote the preceding books. Instant sparks!
Sex (which I don’t show) isn’t romance. They should be a fit, but also challenge one another. Their pasts and secrets create tension and conflict.

I’m not sure about frequency…
Riparia battles anxiety to accomplish what she believes in, but it takes a toll on her over time.
Characters are estranged from their families, who wish them ill.
There are characters who lack acceptance, are actively shunned, or whose pasts, if revealed, would mean their deaths. This is a frequent theme in my writing, fearing for your life for being who you are.

scrapbooking my process
It’d require some work, as in screenshots and printing, but I could do it. There are a lot of elements that make up the steps I take towards writing a story, especially a novel.
By the time I’ve completed a novel, there are charts, diagrams, journal entries, maps, notes, and sometimes images. The images would include a selfie of me completing the book, if I took one, and maybe a picture of a character or two.

At some point, people need to learn to take responsibility and cease being toddlers. It shouldn’t be up to officials, police, teachers, and others to impose common sense and respect for others and the environment.
“If I can get away with it I’m going to do it” is societal rot, our leaders emblematic of that attitude.

My detour into Inverted Reversal has turned out to be a good thing. It’s rejuvenated me, reignited the spark.
In truth, what I’m doing I was going to have to do later, but doing it now is providing a break from targeted editing.
It’s also me experimenting with leaving more adverbs in the story. After, I’ll read through it and see what I think. I wish I’d done this long ago.

glasses
The number of characters who wear glasses in my stories is lower than the Earth average, but then I write Ontyre fantasy.
Interestingly, I can think of at least 4 significant characters who wear glasses in stories, and all of those were written in the last 5 years.
The low percentage is due to some of the issues we correct via glasses being corrected by a healer. Then again, I’ve discovered unique Ontyre reasons for glasses.

what I do
Is my answer different depending on whether I’m answering in-person or online?
No.
The difference lies in •how• I answer.
Online, I craft a halfway intelligent sounding answer in writing. In-person? It emerges as a mangled, meandering string of bewildering words.
I often tell myself to rehearse my response, and I have, but it flees my head in an instant when I open my mouth. No wonder no one locally reads my stories.

Without a doubt, eating can be dramatic.
I noted in my first post about people at dinners.
I’ll build upon that using a well-known example, the film Return of the King. There are probably some who already know what I’m going to reference.
In the film, while a doomed attack on the orcs is occurring, Pippin sings beautifully and, in a disturbing contrast, Denethor attacks his food. Once viewed, you don’t forget.

@nprofile…7gn4 It was 10-miles, or 16k. Every step of the way it was spires to the north. There was also a stream with beaver ponds, small waterfalls, and a long cascade at the point when I turned around.
The trailhead is located at the mouth of the canyon, so from the first step it's nothing but extraordinary vistas above and below. It's located in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana.

I should’ve started the targeted edit on Trellis House yesterday, but I needed a break. Targeted editing is intense and demanding. On the edge of burnout, I needed a change.
So, I’m revising the novella Inverted Reversal, a key backstory for Book-7. I won’t be publishing it, so it’s a more casual task.
Except that the story is heartbreaking.

Sorcerers, because they consume lifeforce, have solid black eyes (no white). If it becomes an addiction, they turn solid white. Sorceress Crimson has solid black eyes, which is significant in Book-4.

In Kovenlore Chronicles, Riparia’s blue-green eyes became significant because Maniff finds them attractive. Depending on the light, they’re blue or green.

So, I’ll run with it…
In story, I’ve often had a character(s) eat or drink as an activity during a scene, something done casually. It adds action and a visual backdrop.
Taken a step farther, there are dinner parties. Arguments, double meanings, glaring, furtive gazes, insinuations, touching, and so on. Manners gone wrong.

Typography is the appearance of “printed matter.” That’s the font, italics, line spacing, paragraph length, and so on. White space is everything else, meaning the blank part of the page.
If you read through the comments, you’ll see that this is more important to some than others. I hope this helps. 😃

Another eclectic day where I refined the Brick Palace blueprint, reacquainted myself with Trellis House, and finished my examination of the issues plaguing Book-7.
I also wrote a lengthy message to myself in my journal about obsessing over adverbs. Yes, some need removed, but they also help a deep POV flow better.
A deep POV narrative is basically dialogue with the reader.

Narratives and/or backstory stories, from short stories to novellas. The short stories highlight key life moments.
A character in Book7 whose roll is critical, but not huge, came across as dull. Essentially, cardboard.
Last July, I wrote a novella chronicling their path to Book-7. I cried for days as their tragic past came to life. This realized character will profoundly impact several main characters.

I kicked that freaking imposter out the door a long time ago.
Sure, I lament readership, and I don’t believe my books are extraordinary, but they ARE enjoyable, meaningful reads for the right audience.
I’ve read books so awful that I regretted reading them, that AI would decline the chance to steal. I keep that in mind.

white space and typography
Words are the river, white space and typography (WS&T) aid the current, sometimes providing the opportunity for white water or a waterfall.
They’re aids for the reader in the same way that punctuation is on the sentence level.
If you’ve ever read a paragraph that goes on for pages and find yourself growing weary, there you are, that’s the danger of extremely unbalanced WS&T.
The two work together, black & white.

I do this often, but was inexplicably lazy about creating this for a building that appears in THREE stories.
When I examined the story in a “novel” scan, I ranted at myself. The building had no personality. They might as well have been in front of a green screen.
At least I had a decent map of the city. 🤣

I see an immature adult with a fragile ego and zero empathy who childishly needs his face/name on everything. True leaders earn their honors via great deeds.
He's a little boy throwing tantrums. Close your eyes. Listen to him talk. When he doesn't get his way, he kicks and screams.
In a 1961 Twilight Zone episode (It's a Good Life), a little boy (Billy Mumy) with infinite power isolates a town and toys with its residents because he can.

"It's about quality of life," is what my pulmonologist told me when I had to be helped into his office in 2017.
When I worked at the university (2018-20), I was surrounded by people who struggled to climb the stairs to the office, and were 10 to 20 years younger than me. Desk jobs are deadly, but only one of them exercised.
Planning retirement should be, first and foremost about how a person intends to maintain their health, not waste away.

Yesterday, I setup my journal for April and at last made a diagram of the Brick Palace, which I should’ve done five years ago.
Using the diagram, I’m making fixes to the novella before its targeted edit. What a difference that’ll make, instead of the characters seemingly always in the same room.
I’m already happier.

This is a little difficult for me to answer where I suffer from a lack of feedback, which would be the best way to answer this.
I’ll just say that my stories are character driven, and the plots, which hold-up well, are quite imaginative. The emotions tend to sneak-up on the reader, which I believe is a strength of the pacing.
I’m quite proud of is the worldbuilding, which is so extensive that it’s real.

The Book-5 targeted edit is COMPLETE.
It’s 13K shorter at 112K total. I now turn to Trellis House, the novella that’ll be published with it.
Trellis House (31K currently) is kind of a bonus, but it also serves to bridge the gap between Books 4/5 and Book-6.
Looking at the series as a whole, Book-6 is the build-up to the series’ climax. Next, I’ll publish Book-4, the midpoint.

Actually, in context, this is tragicomedy from Book-5.
A small party of men on the run from soldiers and mercenaries stumble into a valley of perpetual fog where a teenage girl lives with imps for servants. She’s also an accomplished witch, which shouldn’t be possible at her age.
Myssale has selected one of their party to remain. Beyond that, she makes little sense, but there’s the suspicion she’s trapped in the valley.

With the effort I put into editing this month, and the 2 months preceding, you bet I am. I also kept up with my blog.
On the side, I analyzed the problem with a character arc at the beginning of Book-7. Most of the novel is great, but there are a few issues requiring fixes.
Last July I wrote the novella needed to fix one issue. I’ve now figured out the second. The third, and least damaging, awaits my attention in April.

I literally completed the 3-month targeted edit on Book-5 last night!
I’ve been exhausting myself to solve issues with Book-7 on the side, and to gain additional time later this spring to make the fixes needed, which is going to require rewriting some portions.
Book-7 marks the end of The Kovenlore Chronicles. I refuse to let it be anything less than a great final experience for readers.
