I don’t use it. Well, not directly.
The reason I don’t use it directly, besides not speaking it, is that Ontyre is a different world where there never was Latin.
On the other hand, when naming characters and locations, I sometimes take a word and delve deep into its past to find the root and work from that. Sometimes, I base a name on the Latin, or even Greek.
I seldom, though, track my name origins.

Faith applies to many beliefs, religious and otherwise, and there are those who’d use if for devious reasons.
It took time for me to realize that it’s strongest in Riparia, even if she doesn’t realize it, largely because she fears people having faith in her.
It has less to do with religion and more to do with virtues and seeking faith in herself, with recognizing the needed balance she’s so long lacked.

If I kept a list, which I don’t, it’d become unwieldy in a hurry.
Instead, I use a word, recall I like the sound of it, and move on. In that moment, it’s the word’s purpose in a story that matters.
Then, I forgot it.
Sure, some words sound great, or are hard working closed compound words, but in the end meanings matter.
Here are a few meanings: compassion, ethics, humanity, love, and righteousness.
Yeah, I like those.

When I was 12, we visited the dry Rocky Mountain region and I had instant relief. Eventually, I moved here. The downside is if there’s continual sun. I burn easily. Thus, I found a place that, although it has a dry climate, is frequently cloudy.
The irony is that I love the rain. It’s as if it’s in my English-Irish heritage.

Just a handful of chapters remain to edit in the novella. Good gosh, this story was wordy.
I’m not sure how many words I’ve removed beyond “a lot,” but I know that Book-5 lost 13K words when I used the editing system on it.
When one word is substituted for wordy phrases of four or five words, that’s what happens. Yet, I read it afterwards and it seems like there’s more story.

Frequently! When I do, it increases my focus and comprehension.
Primarily, but not exclusively, I do so with my writing, particularly when editing. For my big targeted edits, the process calls for a minimum of 3x in a variety of ways. Often more.
I have, in the distant past, read to children, which is extremely rewarding, and was something I incorporated into the novel, The Cryptic Design. Opening little minds is a joy.

I grew-up with the promise of technology, of a new age, but as you say, it became superficial thanks to commercialization.
In a way, I could see that promise, and sensed it with deep-space probes , shuttles, and the space station, environmental protections, too. After the oil crisis in 1973, I thought it was okay because of alternative fuels.
Except, of course, greed and war trumped solar and wind. High speed rail didn't happen here. Instead, promise faded while leaders bickered and schemed.

I ignore the superhero path to leadership where one person, typically male, saves the world. In Kovenlore Chronicles, the leaders with absolute power are corrupted leaders.
Even in a group, while some excel with vision, wisdom, or a particular talent and/or specialized knowledge, all possess compassion and righteousness.
They also all help compensate for the failings of the others, the pieces greater than the whole.

First and foremost, romance flows from the characters, not the plot. Shoving two people together isn’t enough.
The original female half of my Kovenlore leads was someone else. They didn’t work. So, I replaced her after drafting Book-4, then rewrote the preceding books. Instant sparks!
Sex (which I don’t show) isn’t romance. They should be a fit, but also challenge one another. Their pasts and secrets create tension and conflict.

Once again, I cried.
I won’t publish the novella because it’s backstory for Book-7. It’s also the saddest, most tragic story I’ve ever written. A character with no understanding of how magic works makes a critical mistake.
All I can do is witness, and cry, the sadness lingering.

Riparia battles anxiety to accomplish what she believes in, but it takes a toll on her over time.
Characters are estranged from their families, who wish them ill.
There are characters who lack acceptance, are actively shunned, or whose pasts, if revealed, would mean their deaths. This is a frequent theme in my writing, fearing for your life for being who you are.

scrapbooking my process
It’d require some work, as in screenshots and printing, but I could do it. There are a lot of elements that make up the steps I take towards writing a story, especially a novel.
By the time I’ve completed a novel, there are charts, diagrams, journal entries, maps, notes, and sometimes images. The images would include a selfie of me completing the book, if I took one, and maybe a picture of a character or two.

At some point, people need to learn to take responsibility and cease being toddlers. It shouldn’t be up to officials, police, teachers, and others to impose common sense and respect for others and the environment.
“If I can get away with it I’m going to do it” is societal rot, our leaders emblematic of that attitude.

In truth, what I’m doing I was going to have to do later, but doing it now is providing a break from targeted editing.

glasses
The number of characters who wear glasses in my stories is lower than the Earth average, but then I write Ontyre fantasy.
Interestingly, I can think of at least 4 significant characters who wear glasses in stories, and all of those were written in the last 5 years.
The low percentage is due to some of the issues we correct via glasses being corrected by a healer. Then again, I’ve discovered unique Ontyre reasons for glasses.

No.
The difference lies in •how• I answer.
Online, I craft a halfway intelligent sounding answer in writing. In-person? It emerges as a mangled, meandering string of bewildering words.
I often tell myself to rehearse my response, and I have, but it flees my head in an instant when I open my mouth. No wonder no one locally reads my stories.

@nprofile…7gn4 It was 10-miles, or 16k. Every step of the way it was spires to the north. There was also a stream with beaver ponds, small waterfalls, and a long cascade at the point when I turned around.
The trailhead is located at the mouth of the canyon, so from the first step it's nothing but extraordinary vistas above and below. It's located in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana.

In Kovenlore Chronicles, Riparia’s blue-green eyes became significant because Maniff finds them attractive. Depending on the light, they’re blue or green.

In story, I’ve often had a character(s) eat or drink as an activity during a scene, something done casually. It adds action and a visual backdrop.
Taken a step farther, there are dinner parties. Arguments, double meanings, glaring, furtive gazes, insinuations, touching, and so on. Manners gone wrong.

Typography is the appearance of “printed matter.” That’s the font, italics, line spacing, paragraph length, and so on. White space is everything else, meaning the blank part of the page.

Another eclectic day where I refined the Brick Palace blueprint, reacquainted myself with Trellis House, and finished my examination of the issues plaguing Book-7.
I also wrote a lengthy message to myself in my journal about obsessing over adverbs. Yes, some need removed, but they also help a deep POV flow better.
A deep POV narrative is basically dialogue with the reader.

Words are the river, white space and typography (WS&T) aid the current, sometimes providing the opportunity for white water or a waterfall.
They’re aids for the reader in the same way that punctuation is on the sentence level.
If you’ve ever read a paragraph that goes on for pages and find yourself growing weary, there you are, that’s the danger of extremely unbalanced WS&T.
The two work together, black & white.

I do this often, but was inexplicably lazy about creating this for a building that appears in THREE stories.
When I examined the story in a “novel” scan, I ranted at myself. The building had no personality. They might as well have been in front of a green screen.
At least I had a decent map of the city. 🤣

Strength? Power?
I see an immature adult with a fragile ego and zero empathy who childishly needs his face/name on everything. True leaders earn their honors via great deeds.
He's a little boy throwing tantrums. Close your eyes. Listen to him talk. When he doesn't get his way, he kicks and screams.
In a 1961 Twilight Zone episode (It's a Good Life), a little boy (Billy Mumy) with infinite power isolates a town and toys with its residents because he can.
Sound familiar?

"It's about quality of life," is what my pulmonologist told me when I had to be helped into his office in 2017.
When I worked at the university (2018-20), I was surrounded by people who struggled to climb the stairs to the office, and were 10 to 20 years younger than me. Desk jobs are deadly, but only one of them exercised.
Planning retirement should be, first and foremost about how a person intends to maintain their health, not waste away.

Nothing like an eclectic day after months of editing Book-5.
Yesterday, I setup my journal for April and at last made a diagram of the Brick Palace, which I should’ve done five years ago.
Using the diagram, I’m making fixes to the novella before its targeted edit. What a difference that’ll make, instead of the characters seemingly always in the same room.
I’m already happier.

unique about my writing
This is a little difficult for me to answer where I suffer from a lack of feedback, which would be the best way to answer this.
I’ll just say that my stories are character driven, and the plots, which hold-up well, are quite imaginative. The emotions tend to sneak-up on the reader, which I believe is a strength of the pacing.
I’m quite proud of is the worldbuilding, which is so extensive that it’s real.

• Starting the targeted edit of the novella, Trellis House.
• Refining the blueprint of the Brick Palace. It’s reprehensible that I haven’t done this until now. It’s vital to several stories.
• Examining and solving the issues that exist with Book-7, which was drafted immediately following Book-6 in 2021 so my planning suffered.
• Reviewing the month of March in my writing journal.

The Book-5 targeted edit is COMPLETE.
It’s 13K shorter at 112K total. I now turn to Trellis House, the novella that’ll be published with it.
Trellis House (31K currently) is kind of a bonus, but it also serves to bridge the gap between Books 4/5 and Book-6.
Looking at the series as a whole, Book-6 is the build-up to the series’ climax. Next, I’ll publish Book-4, the midpoint.

My priority will be a targeted edit of the novella, Trellis House, which will take about half of the month.
After that, my attention will shift to preparing Book-4 for publication, which means a final review, writing the book description, and so on.
I’m ahead of schedule this year as a whole, which I’d hoped for so I can grab a block of time to fix some issues with Book-7. That way I can let those fixes sit for a while.

Actually, in context, this is tragicomedy from Book-5.
A small party of men on the run from soldiers and mercenaries stumble into a valley of perpetual fog where a teenage girl lives with imps for servants. She’s also an accomplished witch, which shouldn’t be possible at her age.
Myssale has selected one of their party to remain. Beyond that, she makes little sense, but there’s the suspicion she’s trapped in the valley.

With the effort I put into editing this month, and the 2 months preceding, you bet I am. I also kept up with my blog.
On the side, I analyzed the problem with a character arc at the beginning of Book-7. Most of the novel is great, but there are a few issues requiring fixes.
Last July I wrote the novella needed to fix one issue. I’ve now figured out the second. The third, and least damaging, awaits my attention in April.

I literally completed the 3-month targeted edit on Book-5 last night!
I’ve been exhausting myself to solve issues with Book-7 on the side, and to gain additional time later this spring to make the fixes needed, which is going to require rewriting some portions.
Book-7 marks the end of The Kovenlore Chronicles. I refuse to let it be anything less than a great final experience for readers.

Sailing south, Sorceress Crimson, for the 1st time, moves out of range of Knoss Citadel’s crypt vessel, the sudden loss of external magic causing illness.
She makes it to her cabin in comical, yet pitiful, fashion.
I’ve always liked the fact that, taken at face value, Mazatta’s short phrases seem innocent enough, but it often seems there’s something more…

@nprofile…0p26 I so loved the NaNo drafting sprints that I still draft a novel in a month.
Three months for the final targeted edit is a killer (there's the end date), yet I'd like to publish my novels more quickly (the entire series is written), but this is the fastest I can get it done.
Part of the reason I've worked myself harder this time is to gain a month in early summer to rework some issues in Book-7.
I view it as the price of not being able to afford an editor.

The editing project begun on January 1st draws to a close. My methods are tedious, but only cost me time, which I have (until I don’t, of course).
Too, done isn’t exactly Done. I will next perform a targeted edit on the novella, Trellis House, which is much shorter.

I’ve drafted 13 publishable novels, 14 novellas, 6 novelettes, and +40 short stories.
I love the limitations and possibilities of each. To try and separate would be me choosing between majestic vistas and intimate portraits.

There are handwritten notes, but anything critical eventually ends up in Scrivener. There are, though, differences between those files.
Worldbuilding files tend to read like textbooks to aid organization, the shorter topics similar to essays.
My general list of characters, especially for Kovenlore Chronicles, is grouped in various categories.
There are also the backstory narratives and backstory tales for certain characters.

Outside of mentions, and excluding gryphons, they’re featured characters a couple of times.
The MOST prominent is Mazatta the Crow in Kovenlore Chronicles, who’s introduced in Book-2. He has a profound influence on one character arc in the series, and even the series as a whole.
The other instance is an owl in the novella, Holiday in Farthing. Youba is small owl and is something of a rescue. I named my desk mascot after him.

Time. Otherwise, nothing.
Time, meaning I really could’ve used more than 24-hours in each day because I have so many writing tasks demanding my attention simultaneously with trying to finish the targeted edit of Book-5.
How much more can I cut out or delay? How many more meals can I eat while editing? At some point it becomes ridiculous, but it’s almost over so I’m not going to complain too much.

It was an experience that will influence me in the future. When we experience life we value it more, and are more willing to fight for it.

The Kovenlore series looks back in a prequel (Book-3) where both main characters long to turn back the clock.
Maniff because he wants to save Vess from death on the fateful night he can’t forget. The argument. Her going out alone without the benefit of his “sight.”
Gliss wants to return to her (loveless) childhood when the future held promise, in the days before she developed the “gift that was a curse.”

To be clear, I don’t “abandon.”
I still have every story, worthy of publishing or not.
In my vetting approach, there are countless ideas that never make it out of my head because they aren’t stories.
Likewise, some novel ideas show promise so I write them down and let them sit. Most of those are never pursued. It’s the chosen few that I eventually draft.
I’m more willing to just dive into my shorter works.

I’m close, but will lose a block of time today at the No Kings march downtown.
To aid my writing self, I made certain I’d have a fairly short chapter to work on tomorrow, and then got a head start on it last night.
