Been doing a lot of AWS infra work the last few days, mostly data infra, with Claude + Opus 4.8. A few observations:
- Adversarial review is non-negotiable. The second agent with a fresh context finds many major issues that would otherwise result in rework / breakages / security issues
- It’s a mixed bag with data infra in particular (area I understand deeply, including in AWS in particular) - the bot is happy to layer a lot of complexity / moving parts with little to no gain, and keeps doubling down on suboptimal solutions even in the face of evidence (brittle / failing workloads, etc).
More generally while standing up a greenfield env today, it’s a non-trivial amount of effort to figure out how to grant an agent enough access for free-form observability and troubleshooting but no ability to mutate or access secrets. This aspect is quite stimulating to puzzle through though

Worth puzzling over why Bitcoiners as a tribe haven’t migrated to Nostr en masse - given the extent to which the values align. Hard to chalk it up to just the network effect - since on Twitter/X it’s mostly confined to the social layer, while on Nostr it extends to *everything* on top of the protocol, ie all the “other stuff”

One notable thing about LLMs is that they really are remarkably good with language :) (shocker, I know). When I tell my bot that he’s been “holding it wrong”, he groks exactly what I mean to convey. I am beginning to think that we don’t need to try to rebuild ~Spotify on Nostr. In my book, the music-on-Nostr story would be a resounding success if were able to surface the existing (and continually growing) corpus of live DJ sets in the numerous sub-genres of electronic music, live hip-hop performances, and so on from the last ~20-30+ years. Back in the day, Soulseek was amazing for that but I’m not even sure where you’d go for something like this these days. Just nail that on Nostr, and you have a core dedicated community in perpetuity.
Overall, I think it’s Ok to zag where the mainstream zigs, and onboard smaller but focused / dedicated communities piecemeal

It’s the same tradeoff as with hardware wallets, right? You moved the keys to something dedicated but now that thing itself is a much juicier target that needs to be hardened. Still, I’d rather trust the dedicated thing whose stated purpose is to keep your keys safe - and has the eyeballs on it - than any random app

I think one of the cardinal sins of modern mobile OS UX design - along with all the apps in the industrial engagement farming complex - is that when you reach for the device / app with intention, you first get a pile of unrelated crap shoved in your face / mental context. I’m far from a UX person but I’m not oblivious to what that does to me / my cognition. I think there’s room for UX that respects / is geared toward intentionality, and Nostr could be a great testbed to try to develop such approaches

COUNT is great but it’s also just one kind of aggregation on the data, with a query of fixed shape (the filter) - not an arbitrary aggregation / transformation. Works great if all you want is a count :)

I think underlying the user growth concerns is the assumption that without a larger user base it would be harder to get to a place with self-sustaining core Nostr infrastructure and ecosystem, which would make the construct itself more fragile. I don’t know if that’s true actually - there is a plausible universe where at the limit network participants provision and operate most of their own resources / infra, or it’s very uncle Jim-heavy. Nevertheless, there doesn’t seem to be much info out there - would be great to learn about folks in the network ecosystem that may have figured it out or are on a trajectory to sustainability

Social music discovery will be a huge unlock in this. And Nostr will absolutely shine here. Spotify buried their social features pretty quickly - I suspect because it ultimately had negative $ impact on their monetization metrics. But we don’t have this issue here, and can truly get to a place where you’re fed great recommendations, and discover new music by following those with great taste / depth / breadth. Much to look fwd to!

What’s the current thinking as far as app recommendations? Actual app installs are not captured in any non-encrypted events, right? So it’s not trivial to do things like “you may also like” based on frequent co-occurrences and other methods that need cross-user data, right? Some mileage in app stacks and local recommendations I’m guessing. Curious about the overall thinking though and where things might be heading over time

Another major aspect of the @nprofile…kjtv worth highlighting is the cadence of app updates / releases - because these are not gated / bottlenecked by a centralized app store, devs are able to ship updates much faster to their users, even multiple times a day if they wish, and some do. We’ve been averaging about 10 updates / releases per day for Nostr-native apps and ~50 / day total recently.
Again, this is a unique strength of the Zapstore / Nostr-native approach over traditional / centralized app stores - you trust the dev through your web of trust already, therefore you’re most likely happy to accept software updates from them as fast as they are able to ship!

Zapstore really is a treasure, and such an inspiring example of how the best of Nostr comes together.
This has not been lost on app devs - the number Nostr-native apps (apps published by devs using their own Nostr identity / keys) has been growing exponentially! This is the cleanest exponential, if I have ever seen one.
The rate of native apps to total (which includes republished apps from GitHub / F-droid) is also increasing, currently at about 8%.

I think this phase will pass / subside substantially - eventually folks that spin up low-value bots will get discouraged with 0 sats flowing their way (despite tokens spent) and mute-lists and other measures. I am absolutely convinced, however, that over time high-value / genuinely useful bots will emerge on Nostr, so we should be careful and wise not to overreact at this stage with indiscriminate bot suppression.

A transformative aspect for the social media plane - imagine not being harvested for ad-based monetization, and a new adoption base for Bitcoin itself - more people can first encounter Bitcoin via zaps than anything else so far. And many other things yet to be imagined / composed on top of Nostr + Bitcoin!

There’s a good chance the next leg up in Nostr adoption would come through a good old controversy - piracy, something adult-themed that is particularly eyebrow-raising, etc.
Or perhaps something a bit more contemporary, like a large scale distributed model distillation that’s autonomously coordinated via Nostr… Imagine the whackamole that would ensue - largely futile and highlighting the inherent strengths / resilience of the network.
In any case, we’re probably not far off technically from being able to quickly scale the different layers / components of the stack to accommodate the growth by an order of magnitude or so. The costs would explode for the infra, but it might get easier to raise funding for the operators, and focus the thinking on the sustainability in terms or resources required. Maybe it’ll force things more in the direction of requiring some contribution of compute / storage / bandwidth to participate in the network…
I’m less sure we’re ready for the accompanying onslaught of spam and low-value bots vying for attention / engagement, however, but pretty confident this can also be navigated over time.
Overall, I can’t shake the feeling this thing is on the verge of breaking out - the more I hack on it and understand / marvel how things hang together and compose, and get the visceral sense for the pace of innovation. Also, what a powerful confluence of open permissionless protocols, cryptographic identity, AI and network-native magic money.

I love how flexible and composable things are in Nostr. Running @nprofile…g3uz relay locally on my phone now (thank you @nprofile…qwte !). Added it to the list of relays for my npub. Pulled all my events into it locally. Can also now probably do a bunch stuff while completely offline. Much delight

Nostr is fascinating and has been a very rewarding rabbit hole to be falling into. I couldn’t help it but start itching to try to measure the current levels of user activity and the trajectory.   It looks like we have been hovering at around ~5k daily active users and ~30k monthly active users for the past year - based on the data I have right now and the current methodology.  This is currently based on aggregating most of the major events in the network indicating user activity - posts and replies (kind-1), reactions (kind-7), zap receipts (kind-9735), etc. Some of the more obvious and egregious spikes due to bot swarms, etc. have been removed. The data is from two major relays so far - relay.damus.io and relay.snort.social (both support negentropy, so historical data acquisition with strfry is straightforward). Pure lurker activity (follow-list updates, profile updates, etc.) is not currently measured (requires continuous acquisition of replaceable events) and can lift these numbers meaningfully, but not by an order of magnitude most likely.   Would love to hear if this aligns with what folks have been seeing through their own methods and observations!   One of the next aspects I’m curious to explore is what happens if I start moving out on the long tail of relays by progressively acquiring and incorporating data from smaller relays for this analysis - would that simply lift the baseline DAU/MAUs while keeping it roughly flat, or would we see growth?

I think we need to be mindful that to a very large degree this is ark building and ideological - we have a strong opinion and agency as to what the next iteration of the internet should look like - and dial in patience accordingly. Given the focus on fundamentals / solid composable technical underpinnings, over time we’re bound to see breakout experiences built on top of Nostr. The users won’t even need to first know that whatever delights them is built on Nostr, but we can gently reveal it to them when the time is right, or / and leave enough breadcrumbs for them to discover that eventually. At that point we have the beginnings of a flywheel - they will take the next Nostr thing more seriously, and eventually even seek out Nostr stuff

Much delight - getting pretty happy with where I’ve been able to progress to with my envbox builds over time. Two separate units now: one running next to the solo Bitcoin miners and the other in the living area. Near-realtime environmental metrics produced: temperature, relative humidity, illumination, barometric pressure, CO2, particulate matter. The unit next to the miners has an additional noise level sensor - proper factory-calibrated dBA. All metrics are exposed by the units via a REST API. Data is continuously acquired from the envboxes and the miners by Telegraf into InfluxDB and plotted in Grafana - all running on an Umbrel

Integrated a particulate matter (PM) sensor - Sensirion SPS30 - into my envbox build. This should hopefully give me some insight into the dust buildup / particulates in the air around where my miners are running.
Ran out of available GPIOs on the original ESP32 “CYD” board, so spun this up as a separate “dustbox“ unit for now. Will be getting a different ESP32 board with more available GPIOs next most likely - to bring this all back onto a single MCU board, and reduce the overall footprint.

Integrated a sound pressure level sensor into my envbox / sensor array build. This now will allow me to cap the max dB(A) / noise level generated by the miners as I auto-tune / overclock them - in the same way you’d normally cap max ASIC and VR temperatures, and max power.

Show your miner a little love today and de-dust the heatsink / fan 🧹 This guy went from laboring at 100% fan -> ~60%, all else being equal.   The fan acoustics were starting to sound peculiar, which is what drew my attention. Hopefully no lasting damage to the fan, but I’m not so sure. Wish there was a better way to get alerted earlier.

New addition to the silent miner family. Got NerdMiner_v2 1.8.3 to work on these USB dongles - LILYGO T-Dongle S3. Hashrate consistently at ~240 kH/s, compared to ~70 kH/s on 1.6.3. Beautiful little devices 😍
