Peru is not only one of the world's standout food countries. It is also seriously good at coffee.
The food part gets most of the headlines, fairly enough. Peru keeps picking up major culinary recognition, and Lima is not just participating in that story, it is leading it: Maido was named The World's Best Restaurant 2025 by The World's 50 Best Restaurants.
What people miss is that the coffee side is serious too.
Part of that comes from the producer side: Peru has built a real reputation in coffee, and Lima is increasingly good at turning that into the actual café experience. Genuinely good espresso, filter coffee and carefully roasted local beans, without making the whole thing feel inaccessible or pretentious.
On the ground, the density is what stands out. In parts of Lima like Miraflores and Barranco, good coffee shops stop feeling like one-off recommendations and start feeling like an actual scene: RAIZ and Neira in Miraflores; Ciclos, Caleta Dolsa and Monótono in Barranco.
The interesting bit is that food and coffee are not developing in separate little boxes. There is exchange between the two: fine-dining kitchens taking specialty coffee seriously and putting it on the table, and coffee people borrowing ideas from those kitchens as producers get pulled into a broader culture of flavour, technique and new product development.
So yes, come to Peru for the ceviche, Nikkei, comida criolla and the kind of produce that makes the whole food culture work. But do not overlook the coffee. In Lima, especially around places like Miraflores and Barranco, it is part of the same story.

No, you can't buy everything on the ground in Asunción. Walk the shops for a bit and it's obvious: certain brands, certain gear, whole niches just aren't on the shelves.
The plot twist is that for most things you'd order online anyway, that barely matters. Several forwarding companies here give you a Miami address. You buy from any US shop, order it to that address, and it gets forwarded down, priced by weight. For ordinary orders under the threshold, think low-to-mid $20s per kilo by air with customs and taxes included. A week or so later it's in Asunción, ready for pickup or delivery. And it isn't just a US thing: several of these services run a similar setup for China too, with their own China-side address.
It's not zero friction. Sometimes there's a pre-alert, an invoice for pricier items or a short list of restricted categories. Normal customs stuff. But try doing it fully on your own, finding a shop that ships direct to Paraguay and then dealing with the customs paperwork yourself, and you'll quickly see why these services exist. The whole appeal is that they handle a lot of the process for you. You pay by the kilo, they deal with the bureaucracy. The default path for everyday orders is boring, predictable and open to anyone here.
And that's the part nobody warns you about: the city with less in its shops turned out to have more within reach. We have easier access to US goods here than in parts of Europe, including things a European would find genuinely awkward to source. Over there, a package from abroad increasingly feels like an application process.

Why such an ugly first post?
Not exactly planned, but in hindsight probably the perfect way to start explaining what this page is about: hands-on reports on life on the ground in LatAm. The good, the bad and, fairly often, the ugly too.
Because yes, there are breathtaking landscapes, friendly people and amazing food. There is also chaos, stupid and nonsensical rules like this one and, depending on where you are, all kinds of risks and annoyances that glossy travel posts usually skip.
Anyway, back to Buenos Aires.
We found a cheap flight with a 5.5-hour layover there. Sounded ideal: enough time to get out of the very central Aeroparque airport, grab a nice empanada lunch, have a coffee and get back without stress.
Too bad the Argentine Republic had other plans.
Argentina has a rule that passengers who continue onward within 12 hours and leave from the same place they arrived have to remain within the airport unless Migraciones authorizes a temporary departure in delay or force-majeure cases.
We were told the idea was to stop people from leaving the airport and missing their onward flights.
So that was that: city right there, behind the glass, and functionally not for us. Instead we were stuck in the international terminal, which is not exactly where you want to be trapped for hours. That meant overpriced food options, a Starbucks (🤢), few places to charge anything and no lounge either. Fine for passing through, much less charming when you are suddenly sentenced to spending your layover there.
And this is exactly the kind of thing this page will be about.
Not “everything is terrible”, because it obviously isn’t. Buenos Aires is great. Aeroparque is also genuinely convenient if you can actually enter the city and come back quickly.
But brochure convenience and lived reality are two different things.
Sometimes LatAm gives you the postcard. Sometimes it gives you a rule so stupid it feels made up. Usually it gives you both at once.
That gap, between how things are supposed to work and how they actually feel on the ground, is what this page is for.
The plan is pretty simple: hands-on reports on life on the ground in LatAm. Not brochure copy, not doomposting, just the useful reality. What is great, what is messy and what can catch you off guard.
