Self-custodial Lightning is temporary because there is not enough space on L1. Even the LN whitepaper says Bitcoin needs 133MB blocks for everyone to make just two channels a year.
I don’t need to try it. I know it will work "now", but it’s temporary.

I used to make these paper Bitcoin wallets for fun. They are highly scalable and private, because you pass the private key without using the blockchain.
The problem is, the issuer can prove there are coins in the wallet, and then rug you before you get home.

Hal wrote about Bitcoin banks before Satoshi had invented merged mining. It was the obviously simple scaling solution, but they continued to develop and build.
Bitcoin banks will suffer the same fate as gold-backed banks. The solution is multiple "medium-size" blockchains.
So instead of 10GB blocks on L1, we have ten 1GB sidechains + 1MB L1, secured by Bitcoin miners and cheap enough for businesses to run full archival nodes.
The rest of us can use SPV wallets (and still run a full L1 node), which are massively better than custodians.

I have made a template to create browser apps for your PC and access them securely on your phone. I have already built a few examples.
The video shows me using the @npub1wnw…95l8 nostr client. Simply clone Iris and run the program; and in a separate terminal, run secureserver. Visit the provided URL (your public ip), go through the authentication process, and you have a local version of Iris running remotely on your phone.
@npub1sn0…jtws works too, but it takes several seconds to load in the remote browser. That is not snort’s fault, so I will work on it.
There is also a pretty cool photo app that turns your PC into a personal cloud, and a Bitcoin wallet that uses your own node. Here is the code to secureserver, with links to the other apps:

It would be nice if we didn’t need to think about Monero, but it’s a separate blockchain that can do very important things that Bitcoin cannot do. Not shitcoinery, but actual use cases. This is why both Michael Saylor and Peter Todd have said "if you need privacy, use Monero".
I don’t want it to be this way, but the culture is shifting and privacy is no longer desirable for these fiat corporations and the governments they trust in. That is why they continue to push their sunken cost into lightning. Devs are still trying to figure out how to scale Lightning. How many more decades until they attempt non-custodial privacy?
Bitcoin is a much better store of value than Monero. There is no second best in that department. But I came to Bitcoin because it is supposed to be the best money, and money has many more properties than "store of value".

Amazon can bribe miners right now, and it gets easier to do so as miners lose revenue every four years. If we want to stop them from conspiring, we have to incentivize them.

Liquid is a multisig pretending to be a sidechain. 15 people control your coins.
Drivechains are sidechains, chosen by 51% hashrate. They are a promise from the miners that they support these sidechains and will not destroy them in 10 minutes.
There is no reason to put sidechain technology on a fake sidechain and see how it does.
If you want to peg out of Liquid, and the Liquid federation wants to give you your Bitcoin, but 51% of miners do not want you to have your coins, they can censor you. They can censor lightning. They can kill every L2, including drivechains.
BIP300 recognizes this, so it does two things to protect itself:
1. Massive fees to miners. Why would miners kill something that always pays them? They are incentivized to protect the sidechains, make them better, and continue mining L1.
2. Six month peg out. This gives us six months to see if the miners are misbehaving, with a constant warning displayed to the world every 10 minutes.
If using a second layer to Bitcoin is its eventual future for the masses, then there is nothing close to drivechains.
BitVM has similar issues, though it’s MUCH better than lightning, and that is why Super Testnet and Robin still support BIP300.
