It looks like mastodon.cloud has been thoroughly abandoned by its owners and moderation staff resulting in some rather wild tomfoolery there along with some glaring security concerns so we've marked the server as "Limited" for now and will give it a week or so to see if things improve before we properly block it.

I didn’t realize that, I guess that makes sense why my changes to the web service don’t impact it. I don’t have Prometheus metrics enabled because I found it extremely confusing. I guess I should look into enabling that to help track down the bottleneck?

I enabled stats on the puma service and monitor it with a PHP script that generates alerts when the backlog number gets higher than 1000.

I’ve been using pgbouncer and it’s been basically magic since running it, I didn’t think it was a database issue because PgHero rarely shows over 50 connections but my web connections (puma) will hit over 1000 active a few times an hour now, sometimes queuing up 10-40k backlogs.
I never had this issue with >30k active users so something must have changed recently with my user activity.

Looking for some advice from #MastodonAdmins
What setting do you have WEB_CONCURRENCY and MAX_THREADS for your puma (mastodon-web) service?
I’ve set it 50 and 20 respectively for a pool of 1000 web processes, but I’ve been getting constant overloading with tens of thousands of backlogged connections.
Do I need to adjust the mastodon-streaming service settings also? I increased my database connection limit to 1500 to handle the connections plus extras.
Any ideas?

I'm looking over different payment platforms for non-businesses and it seems that it's nearly impossible to accept payment as a person without one party paying some sort of fee and it's really breaking my brain this morning.
Even excluding fees, they all pretty much suck because the credit card companies or servicers on the backend suck.
I may have thought of a good workaround, but it's less convenient so it probably won't work.

I'm guessing a lot of that cost is because of the location? I can't even comprehend what a deployment like that would look like. I'm trying to imagine what a $500/month deployment would look like. Do you happen to have an infrastructure diagram or anything so I can see what your deployment looks like? I really need to rewrite mine, this one is from 2023 where I had a 12 server deployment and it was costing me roughly $90/month.

If any Mastodon instances are having trouble with their coats growing out of control, ping me and see if can help lower your bill.
Apparently a recently closed instance was paying $300/month for hosting which is insane to read considering how small of an instance it was. When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.
It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out they’re paying more than instances 10x their size. 😢

What's really funny is that this seems to happen to you so often that if you ever wanted to run a criminal enterprise you could probably get away with it because of the number of times people have tried to falsely tie unrelated illegal operations to your name you'd have a lot more historical data showing that it isn't you than proof that it is. 🤣
