When you sign a transaction you provide two bits of evidence. The signature of the hash of the transaction you are signing that is mixed with a random number, and a random point on the elliptical curve that was computed with the random number. With the random point plus the public key the verifier can validate you must have the private key to the public key and that signature was made with the same private key because they can produce the same random point with those two data points ?

In school when you did algebra you were given various values for a or b or x and y and if you were given enough real life values for those things you could figure out all the values of the other letters in the equation.
When you sign a Bitcoin transaction you need to use a random number to prevent people eventually having enough values for the a/b/x/y and figure out your private key if you do multiple transactions with it.
Deterministic nonces (nonce = random number) are based off the hash of the transaction you’re signing so will only ever be used once. This prevents signers messing up the random number that protects your private key.
This is what I think I learned this weekend. Now I think I know why NVK keeps mentioning them in Bitcoin Review.

I pulled the latest and I can see cashu tokens in the logs 🥜
I tried connecting macadamia and cashu.me but there was an issue. Macadamia reported that the keysets for the mint were not available.
I can program but not much of a developer! I’ll keep playing with Windsurf and see where I get to. Windsurf thinks it’s an issue with the HASH unit keysets being unretrivable given the Custom unit.

All logical - 3 is a strong point to my cocktail based rambling. My bias is to think of Bitcoin in biology terms because that’s when I first encountered game theory. Through that lens I had my first “oh sh**” moment when reading about Bitcoin.
I think that software needs to improve and change to stay relevant but I need to distinguish protocol from regular software.

I don’t really mind the concept of Citrea building on top of Bitcoin. I guess it’s the free market in action. Success or failure will happen.
That said more focus on self custodial features would be my preference. Self custodial features preserve and strengthen the baseline value proposition of the network. But increasing those features has a less obvious payoff for market participants.
I would hope that such features benefit miner pools to retain the incentives. I would pay 10x fees to lock my coins up in a way that prevents spends for a period of time but allows transactions in the future - obviously there are probably better setups and that requires more thought.
The incentives of promoting self custodial confidence seems like a long tail opportunity.

I often hear people say that Satoshi wasn’t the best coder or early versions of Bitcoin were a mess.
I think that yes the whole codebase probably had many flaws.

I think umbrel has “Public Pool” as an option, in fact I think someone won a block with that setup a month or two ago. If your miners are on the same network as the umbrel should be pretty easy to point them to the umbrel node.

I understand why people say that only economic nodes matter and could dictate consensus changes. I still think a network of small node runners makes a difference and has a say.
To transmit transactions to peoples’ wallets there needs to be a wider network of facilitators. If those nodes block transactions the economic nodes become impacted and less valuable. If the majority of the nodes act according the economic nodes and miners become more centralized and thus less Bitcoin like, and more likely to be the failed fork?

Would be cool if there was a way to sign against an anonymous utxo set to prove ownership of an unspent amount at the same time nodes could verify no “double spending of utxo proofs”. Usually I setup up the self custodial node and channels - zero inbound liquidity.
To free up some inbound liquidity I download Zeus and setup a “node in the phone” then send myself some sats to Zeus. Then I shut down Zeus and drain the sats back to my own on chain address.
I don’t even know if I’m doing it correctly but if that could be automated it would be great!

Current thought:
I imagine a lot of people run 2/3 or 3/5.
Now we have miniscript so we can do degrading multisigs.
But both require safe harbor for a descriptor or unique wallet software.
In the worst case scenarios, regulatory attack, or duress perhaps funds can still be lost.
Can predated presigned transactions be useful here, if the multisig is accidentally or intentionally destroyed?
Laser engrave 10 presigned transactions with different fee rates set to an nlock time (?) N halfings in the future. Receive address is a standard single sig (memorized).
I am almost certain this could be a #footgun so other thought….

@npub1emd…c9aw if I set up two miniscript wallets with the same xpubs and shape such as a 2/3 decaying to single sig BUT I used different time lock criteria on each wallet - are the addresses and keys still compatible as long as the time constraints are satisfied trying to spend from either wallet?
I guess I’m trying to ask if I could recreate a functional wallet from the xpubs if I remembered the shape of the wallet but not the original time constraints used?

Companies like Unchained and Swan must KYC you because they provide financial services but Nunchuk and Casa don’t so as long as you can’t be identified from the email you use then they are probably your best options to look into.
