CNRS is to recruit 1 person in programming languages on a tenure-track position leading (if confirmed) to a "research director" position (senior scientist, =professor without teaching). This person may get affiliated to the LIG or VERIMAG labs in Grenoble (LIG and VERIMAG are to merge in 2027).

Hier, un collègue de Microsoft m'a dit qu'ils ont (en gros) un objectif minimal de dépenses de tokens, pour justifier qu'ils ne perdent pas de temps à coder à la main.
Il m'a rapporté le comportement suivant: une personne déboguait à la main un truc compliqué, et donnait les bouts de programme à modifier au LLM à mettre dans les fichiers au lieu d'éditer directement afin que ça soit compté dans son bilan IA.

Je crois que mon benchmark programmation pour les IA est "écrivez moi un script qui extrait de HAL le nombre de publications de Verimag entre 2019 et 2024 et parmi celles-ci celles avec un coauteur ou une coautrice à l'étranger".
Ça l'air bête mais purée ça envoie dans les choux Mistral AI pro.
L'autre benchmark est "Qui est David Monniaux?" (on me dit enseignant-chercheur à Saclay, Marseille, Lyon…).

Sorry about the joke understandable only for French academics. The Sorbonne as a single university ceased to exist circa 1970 and was subdivided into several universities, some of which kept "Sorbonne" in the name for the aura. Futhermore, in the 201x and later years, there have been mergers.
So today "Sorbonne" can mean
Sorbonne University
Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University,
Sorbonne Nouvelle University
It's also the name of a big building in which all these universities have some space.
At some point, Université Paris XIII, which is located in a northern suburb away from Paris, was called "Sorbonne Paris Nord".
Some French academics joke that since the Sorbonne is the only French university known by foreigners (even though it no longer exists), we should rename all universities accordingly (Université Sorbonne Alpes, Université Sorbonne Côte d'Azur).

Dear @npub19mh…v9e6 @npub18nl…fc2n, what is your position on holding conferences in the US, especially with respect to minorities, women and LGBT, especially T?
I know that scientific conferences are sometimes held in countries that do not treat women & LGBT correctly, but somehow these countries' policies are often predictible, whereas the US is now characterized by instability.
We can't hold conferences in a place where attendees may get arrested for something as mundane as going to the bathroom.

Can I bring some nuance to this? The cult that surrounds the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights is quite negative, and hinders reform in many respects. The best known of such issues is firearms.
This amount of devotion (true or feigned) would already be suspicious for a contemporary text, but is ridiculous for a document written in another era, by people who were not really democrats in the current sense (they owned slaves, held that blacks and women were inferior, they fought duels over questions of politics, and so on).

I cannot answer for
@npub14a5…9fse but here's a definite issue:
Martin or myself have little to be scared of if visiting the US (except insurance issues should we have a medical problem, but let us not digress).
However, others (trans persons…) have more to fear. By organizing scientific events in the US, we may exclude these people from the event.
Thus there is a valid case for avoiding attending events there, so as to encourage organizers to schedule them elsewhere.

Today I rode my bicycle in front of a 22 kW car charger. That's 100 amps @ 220V, this is far beyond any normal household wattage.
In a country such as France, and I suspect the same applies to the US, energy consumption from hydrocarbons tops that from electricity.
