Playing around with Organic Maps, it appears to fail to calculate a route across an area where only the World Map is installed, even though there is a motorways across the missing area, and the world map includes motorways. It simply stops calculating after asking to download an inbetween map.
Let's say someone is planning a vacation trip from Copenhagen to Rome. Needing to download only the Copenhagen and Rome maps would make a huge difference in both space and download size compared to downloading every map along the route. And such trips are usually done on motorways anyway.

Killing the extension API was just the step that made it impossible to stay on Firefox, most people had given up long before that point.

All of them.
If I still had my Firefox install, I could give you a list of extensions that I had installed, but I removed the last traces of it years ago, having used two different browsers in the mean time. First Pale Moon, but they didn't have the developer capacity to keep extensions working, and then moved to Vivaldi, which does almost everything that Firefox used to do (except for the built in IRC client, but that was never among my needs).

From Firefox 4 to 56, every other release broke or removed some feature I (and many others) used all the time. Every single time, Mozillas answer was "write an extension". Had Chrome had a useful extension framework, rather than their mostly useless "web extensions", I would have switched a long time ago, just like many others did in that time period.
By the time Firefox reached version 56 I had 17 extensions installed, 15 of which were "must have". Firefox 57 removed extension support, replacing it with the same web extensions that kept Chrome as not an option.
Breaking and removing anything that made Firefox better than Chrome, while ignoring user complaint and generally being hostile to users is what took Firefox from 40% to under 10% market share.
During the same time, from a user perspective, Google didn't improve Chrome much. They didn't need to, all they had to do was sit on their asses and watch Mozilla destroying Firefox.

Firefox had something like 40% of the browser market before Mozilla started enshittifying it. The only part Google played in that was paying Mozilla while they did it.
While some of us do suspect that enshittifying Firefox was a requirement of the contract with Google, I have never seen any evidence that was the case. And Mozilla could still have refused to sign such a contract.

NTFS treats a file kinda like a group of files, with a default file that gets opened when you open the file itself.
Somewhat like a ZIP archive, but not compressed, and done at the filesystem level instead of at the application level, and hidden from any program that doesn't know what to look for (they will get the default stream).
In this example, Notepad doesn't know about alternate data streams, but they can be accessed using normal filesystem calls by appending a colon and the name of the stream.
Or maybe like a video file, where you have the video, English sound, Spanish sound, French sound and several subtitle streams. Except, just like a zip file, a video stream does it at the application level.
I think the idea was to be able to support something like the Mac pre-OSX ressource forks (where the icon and file type was hidden - Macs din't use file extensions for that), but I've never seen it used for anything other than hiding stuff.

The best option for what?
What's the best car gets you a different answer depending on whether you need to haul 40 tons or are trying to win the Daytona 24.
Same with email programs - cli, dropin replacement for Outlook, familiar to Emacs users or a minimal mail program with a GUI interface, all will give you differen interfaces.
For me, sylpheed is the best. Minimal, depends on neither QT nor Gtk3/4.
