Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett denied a challenge from a Democratic candidate for the Michigan House to have his opponent disqualified from the August primary ballot.
“This moment is a powerful affirmation of justice, and I am deeply grateful to the supporters nationwide, the Michigan Democratic Party, and the elected leaders who stood with us,” Joanna Whaley said in a statement.
Last week, former state representative Frank Liberati, who is running for Michigan’s 2nd House District near Detroit, filed a complaint with the clerk accusing his opponent, Whaley, a Lincoln Park clergy member, of not listing her legal name when she filed to run for office.
Liberati accused Whaley, a transgender woman, of violating state campaign finance law by not listing her deadname in campaign paperwork, citing a lapsed name change petition from 2023.

"A few months ago we added feedback forms and consent to data collection forms to help us get better at what we do. We are zapping and recording more zapping-data than any single entity in the country. Its such a cool opportunity and I wanted to use that to make things better for everyone, I want to reinvent the gold standard for treatment.
Instead, I mostly got people commenting on how much of an eyesore the website is 😂😂. ...and like hey, I don't disagree 😂😂😂.
But rebuilding or relocating the website is a super expensive project, and I try to run things at just barely profitable in favour of keeping things as accessible as possible for the community and making sure the staff are paid well for their skill. Which unfortunately doesnt leave a huge amount of discretionary funds.
But it doesnt leave nothing either.
I would like to pay someone to redesign our website, to make it more user friendly. Mostly just the aesthetics, the underlying machinery will probably have to stay consistent. This would probably involve a bit of colaboration with me on what the site needs for technical and business reasons too.
But.. making it less ugly really would be great.
The builder we use is Wix, not because its the best, but because its cheap enough*, it worked well enough** for complex scheduling and its what I had access to when it was just lil ol me zapping on my own and I had no idea how to actualy make a website or run a business***.
If there is someone out there who would love to lend their skills and their time to helping us with this. Can you send me an email, maybe with a quick little mockup of what you had in mind and how much you'd like to be paid to [email protected].

Alison Penfold, who represents the New South Wales seat of Lyne, has announced she’ll put forward a private members bill next session to change the laws.
Penfold outlined her intentions to Sky News presenter Peta Credlin, who has also been a prominent campaigner against the current laws.

A court ruling that the exclusion of transgender woman Roxanne Tickle from a female-only app was discriminatory has been upheld.
Ms Tickle has been awarded $20,000 in damages in the case against the Giggle for Girls app and its CEO Sall Grover.

First of all, what is a '[Yarning Circle](https://slll.cass.anu.edu.au/centres/andc/yarning-circle)'? Well it's a place to have a yarn, a conversation, where everyone can speak as equals. I try to host them every so often to provide an update on the instance and where we’re at, while providing a platform to listen to your feedback.

Wow, so much has happened. There’s been a lot of drama, which I will cover in its own section further below for those who don’t want to worry about such things.
Other than that we had our first Lemmyvision participation, we submitted the song [‘Bars’ by Mudrat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g528pBJy2MA), a hard-hitting Australian rap song about media censorship and Palestine. It was a close vote, due to a very limited number of participants. You can still [vote in the finals](https://quokk.au/c/[email protected]/p/874774/lemmyvision-3-vote-for-your-favourite-songs) if you wish to join in the remainder of the event.
We released [Threadirator](https://federation.quokk.au), a tool to help promote new communities across PieFed & Lemmy. Along with what I hope is a working bot to track community growth across the Threadiverse. These tools will help PieFed, whereas others have a strong Lemmy focus often not catering to this platform.
@npub10ps…uj9f has informed me they are intending to leave Quokk.au due to ongoing drama, and are slowly winding down their posting. We will be looking for new moderators to help manage their comms once they do. Please reach out to me if you’d like to apply for any of those positions.
We have hit 100 active members over the last month, showing a clear trend of growth and engagement. Thank you all for helping make this instance such a great place to be.

🍿 **What's the Tea (Drama)?** 🍿
What started with a ban of one of our users for German language concerns around the use of the word Nazi, [has spiralled into a multi-instance issue](https://quokk.au/post/846003) where threats of defederation against smaller instances (us, and others) was thrown around to enforce compliance. The FAF has taken steps to reduce the tensions and by removing administrators, reversing bans, and censoring posts. Sadly this has only been met with increased hostility.
Promptly following this was the beginning of a targeted campaign of misinformation and disinformation. First Quokk.au and dbzedr0 were falsely accused of being infiltrated by Neo-Nazis. Luckily this was [proven false](https://quokk.au/c/[email protected]/p/863935/feddit-org-pushes-falsified-screenshot-portraying-dbzer0-as-nazis-bans-users-for-questioning) after some time, but as the saying goes "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." and the damage from this will probably never be undone despite the truth coming out. It does not help that said post was allowed to stay up for hours after it was proven to be manipulated, giving the original post more time to be seen and believed.
A few days later, the lead developer of PieFed seems to have started [posting cherry-picked stats](https://quokk.au/c/[email protected]/p/869448/which-instances-have-the-most-ban-happy-moderators-analysis-inside) to discredit dbzer0 (and the FAF) as ‘ban happy’ for the actions of a sole moderator - one who personally upset this developer by incorrectly labelling them as a ‘ [Zionist’ in the modlogs](https://quokk.au/c/[email protected]/p/852491/mod-bans-piefed-admins-for-emulating-apologizing-for-a-zionist-while-piefed-social-had-a-pal) (This has now been rectified by dbzer0).
This was followed up again with [another post](https://quokk.au/c/[email protected]/p/874071/ai-assisted-moderation-in-the-fediverse-is-happening-now-what) presenting false and misleading information around the usage of an AI tool to assist moderators in browsing users comment history for patterns of behaivour (Zionism/Genocide Denial in this case), by claiming it was a secretive automated tool that banned users when it simply presented a text file for moderators to view. Please note, this tool has not been used on Quokk.au and I personally do not plan on using it myself, but I will not take issue if any moderators wish to make their job a bit easier.
This has now culminated in PieFed.social’s admin and lead developer making the choice to ‘hide’ our instance from their PieFed instance chooser - Being the flagship instance, this will drastically reduce our visibility to new users and harm our instances future growth. In return I have not ‘hidden’ PieFed.social from our own instance chooser as I do not personally feel the desire to stoop to such a petty low. Depending on how much more we are attacked in the future, I may reverse this decision however.

This morning while checking if Quokk.au's new instance logo was federated out, I discovered that overnight we had been shadowbanned from the PieFed.Social Instance Chooser (This is a tool to help spread out users across the platform and help avoid funnelling users into the largest.)
Knowing that Rimu was happy to explain, I just asked for some clarification as we were visible on every other PieFed instance except his.

Apparently for ' _obvious reasons_ ', of which I can only assume is our left leaning anarchist/pro-trans stance we were chosen not be advertised on the PieFed flagship instance and first point of contact for many potential new users. Seeing as a large portion of our new users found us via this method, it will have a tangible effect on a small instance such as ours.
This was a pretty sad sight to see, and reflects the sort of petty drama that is emanating from the PieFed project lately. It's now the third such move to discredit and harm left leaning instances by PieFed's lead developer. This also shows a trend towards autocratic unilateral decision-making on Piefed.social, of which is starting to be run as a personal fiefdom without consulting the team or users.
I must commend Lemmy.ml for remaining neutral and not letting its own political leanings influence [join-lemmy.org](https://join-lemmy.org/instances), while simultaneously condemn PieFed.social for this immature move that is harmful to the health of the Fediverse.

* Modlog: Reason for the action is only shown from trusted instances, so abusive mods won't have an audience. Admins can still see the reason though. Which instances are trusted is set in the admin UI.
This feature means problematic users can now go undetected, and will harm moderators ability to view their past moderation history. For example PieFed.social runs a 'trusted' list of only [34 instances](https://piefed.social/instances?filters=trusted&search=&page=), meaning any mod action taken by any of the hundreds of instances outside of this will not show up. So for example if Quokk.au was to ban a user for transphobia (our most common ban), this will not be reflected for piefed.social users potentially leading towards more hate speech on the Fediverse.
* Instance silencing similar to Mastodon. A silenced instance is not defederated from but their posts do not show in the Popular or All feeds and their communities are not shown in Starter packs aka Topics. Their communities can still be found in the communities list and joined in the normal way. Once joined, posts in there show up in the subscribed feed as usual.
This is another way to shadowban instances and not 'advertise' them. Surely if an instance is problematic enough that a defederation would be in order rather than this reddit-like move.

Rana temporaria is an “explosive breeding” frog, meaning that they reproduce in a brief window of the year, and thousands of frogs gather in one area at the same time. In these species, the males often significantly outnumber the females and harass and coerce them into amplexus, which is the technical term used for mating in amphibians. Research prior to Dittrich's study suggested that female frogs in explosive breeding species are passive during the mating process, but she found the exact opposite.
In fact, Dittrich wasn’t initially studying the behavior of the females at all. The experiment she ran was to determine whether male frogs had a size preference when selecting mates — that is, did they prefer a larger- or smaller-sized mate? In the experiment, one male was placed in a box filled with 5 cm (2 inches) of water and two females of different sizes, and their behavior was recorded via webcam for an hour.
“But they didn’t show any size preference,” Dittrich said.
Instead, Dittrich noticed three behaviors that the female frogs repeatedly used when they wanted to avoid mating: physically rotating away, mimicking a mating call and tonic immobility. Rotating away from the male was the most common strategy — since amplexus must occur with the male behind and on top of the female, the females would flip onto their back to push the male frogs underwater. Dittrich recorded that behavior in 83% of amplexed females, and it was almost always the first attempted strategy.
If rotation was unsuccessful, 48% of the amplexed females began mimicking mating calls, as if to communicate, “I’m a male frog, not a female frog.” The tonic immobility was a last resort — 33% of amplexed female frogs stiffened their limbs, with “arms and legs outstretched from the body after being amplexed by a male.”
Interestingly, smaller frogs were more likely to go into tonic immobility than larger frogs. Dittrich theorized this might be because tonic immobility is not a conscious condition, but a response to high levels of stress. Smaller females could be younger, less experienced and more prone to high levels of stress than larger females, and thus more likely to show tonic immobility.

By offering practical steps for adults who work with young children to build inclusive and intentional spaces where all children receive positive messages about their unique gender selves, this book increases awareness about gender diversity in learning environments such as child care centers, family child care homes and preschools. The book is based on some of the most progressive, modern understandings of gender and intersectionality, as well as research on child development, gender health, trauma informed practices and the science of adult learning. By including the voices and lived experiences of gender-expansive children, transgender adults, early childhood educators and parents and family members of trans and gender-expansive children, it contextualizes what it means to rethink early learning programs with a commitment to gender justice and gender equality for all children.
