I frequently see people use the American Revolution as a justification for political violence. What I think they miss is that the ultimate goal of the war was 1: create a better system (not just destroy shit to land in a worse place) and 2: end up with a system that makes it much easier to live more freely and initiate change without shooting people.
Yes, they shot people, but I think with the goal of not having to again. I don't think they wanted rule by force, even if they were using force to get there (I view oppressive/offensive and defensive force differently, but that's a different conversation).
Obviously (I have notes complaining ad nauseam, so I won't engage with whataboutisms), we didn't end up with a perfect replacement and will always have work to do. But I think we have it pretty good compared to everywhere else and what we had in the past. I can afford to go anywhere in the world, yet I stay.
