Insurgency and counter economics is a perfectly reasonable response IMO.
Just take to the hills, let them have resource control, torment them as much as possible from a distance. And come back after they're gone.
But I suspect most people would rather pay taxes to support a standing army (given the choice).

I, for one would love to find out if that would work.
However "large syndicates of market protection agencies" rhymes with "army" and the centralized ability to act violently.
It's hard to believe these "agencies" would only protect the peaceful agorists against the bad bad statists
and wouldn't turn rogue for their own benefit.

I have a lot of trouble picturing something on the scale of a national standing army organized through voluntary interaction.
Who exactly is going to sign up for that and why? It's hard to imagine the incentives.
All I can imagine is people were were forward thinking enough to understand that for the sake of *their own defense*, they had to temporarily give up sovereignty and become part of a war machine.
And then whoever is in charge of the war machine has to then relinquish power when the war is over.
And both of those seem very far-fetched given current human behavior.
I guess there's that but also the whole rise and fall of overall Nostr usability that's just left everything washed up inspite of the immense potential this thing has. Where the friends you've made during the high suddenly can't use this protocol the way they used to.
For all the good intentions, it just went the same way as any other platform, albeit one that can maybe flourish again. It's a disservice to everything and everyone I've come to love because of nostr.
Having an armed citizenry is a good thing.
But it is not as effective as controlling resources as a standing army with tanks and missiles and predator drones.
It essentially means you can cede resource control to the invader and resign yourself to being an insurgent and guerrilla warfare.
Which is totally effective over a long time span, but most of us are hoping to live peaceful lives and not be insurgents.
Incidentally
This is why I make that point in conversation, they're likely already thinking that they're talking to an idealist who refuses to recognize real world problems.
So recognizing that there IS a legitimate defense issue in a modern world with huge nation states if small groups were to suddenly just say " our individuals and local communities will provide for their own defense. Good luck!"
Helps convince them that they're not just talking to a crazy person.
It is not an easy problem to solve.
And frankly, I'm pretty confident I prefer the American tyrants to the Chinese or Russian ones.

when next door to it there's a highly organized totalitarian nation with sophisticated technology and weapons?
Does the existence of a single nation that is centrally organized and does NOT recognize the NAP prompt a race to the bottom, lesser-of-two-evils situation where EVERYONE has to organize into fascist society in hopes the local tyrant is better than the foreign one?

I always make a quick tangent to acknowledge the bigger bully problem regarding national defense and concede that given the state of human beings today minarchism is more pragmatic then straight up Anarchism

But something that I believed or practiced that went so against the grain that no one reading it would ever accept it. But for a stone that might stand for decades, I'll wait for one person who may take it seriously, and that'll make it worth it.

Sometimes I get caught up in worrying for the younger folks. A big part of my ability to adapt and roll with the punches of life was built by constantly learning and adapting to the constantly changing tech. If everyone uses AI instead of trouble shooting, will we be worse off?
Other times I don't let fear of the unknown bring me down. Surely what's coming could be ever better than anything I could imagine. That optimism keeps me from falling too much into despair and fear.
