More than 90% of Brazilian adults regularly use PIX, a government-run program that allows users to transfer money in seconds via cellphones at no cost.
President Trump has bombarded Brazil with a list of demands as Washington seeks to assert its influence across Latin America.
However, few things have provoked more outrage here than Trump’s attack on PIX, the country’s beloved instant-payment system that Washington cited as a key justification for its decision this week to impose a 25% tariff on many Brazilian goods.
From coconut sellers to billionaires, more than 90% of Brazilian adults—more than 140 million people—regularly use PIX, a government-run program that allows users to transfer money in seconds on cellphones at no cost. In less than six years since its creation, PIX now handles more transactions in Latin America’s biggest economy than credit and debit cards combined.
The Trump administration disagrees. Washington said Wednesday that, as of next week, it would impose a 25% tariff on some 3,000 goods from Brazil.
“PIX belongs to Brazil, and no one is going to make us change it,” da Silva said earlier this year. PIX has helped millions of poorer Brazilians, a key segment of his political base.
Like a similar system in India called UPI, PIX has encouraged users to ditch cash and open bank accounts after years of avoiding slow and costly bank transfers. The number of active users of Brazil’s financial system nearly doubled from about 77 million in 2018 to 152 million in 2023, a surge the central bank attributes in large part to PIX.

YouTube's algorithm seems to be showing me channels that barely have any subscribers and most of them are about the content creator talking about them having a rough life, in debt, old and nothing to show for.
The majority of them seems to people who bought at the peak of the housing market, developers who got laid off and can't find a job and old people who lost everything, broke and can't retire.
This is the fiat world that Bitcoin is trying to fix.

I have wondered if the quantity of protein the experts recommend is overstated.
I think the answer is clear. You don't need that much protein. From the inmates I know very few if any are getting even 100g per day.

I am not advocating for anyone linking existing npubs to a Google account. Current Nostr users don’t need to change anything at all. This is all about making onboarding easier for everyone else who either tried Nostr and gave up or never joined in the first place because they thought it was too hard. These are users who are not uncomfortable with storing all of their passwords and financial data in a corporate cloud. Over time, once they begin to understand the benefits of better anonymity, they can switch to using sovereign keys.

You can live anywhere now and you can certainly get the information you need wherever you are. Each day you wake up in the same place is a vote for continuance.
You're right about the surveillance per buck value, but I'd say there's a minimum of living conditions required. You don't really want to go to the hospital in southeast asia or africa. Not to mention the roads in some places...
But why do we really fear surveillance if we don't have anything to hide? 😅😅
